Eh, I have divorced parents so I'll be going between the two families that day.

I'd like to bring up my opinion on turkey though. I don't know why it's the symbol food for the holiday. It's a very dry meat.

Now, sweet potatoes, that I can enjoy.

Uhhhhhh I'll prolly just veg out and eat a shitload of mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, green beans, cranberry sauce, and whatever the hell my mom's making this year.

Aw yeah.

We're also having a Thanksgiving potluck in my Humanities class today. I'm bringing a huge spinach salad, prepared by my mother (what can I say? She rocks at things like this). Of course, there's gonna be a shitload of other food, too. I'm SO gonna pig out. C:

It is to mark the day the new Americans made peace with the native Americans and had dinner with them (There was turkey at that dinner as well)
Anyway I think that's the story (I'm not American so I don't know too much)
Nothing.

Us in Canada have Thanksgiving in October. Last month we had a nice dinner when I went to my grandfather's and aunt's house.

I'm going to make pointed asides all day about how the Native Americans were so kind and helpful and then we broke every treaty we made with them, brought them new sicknesses from Europe that killed them, and forced them into tiny reservations far from their homes.
>.> A topic that irritates me. If I'm not careful, I'll get banished from the family table again-for that and calling the whole football insanity that runs in the males of my family stupid.

Uh... they killed them by shooting them where they were walking around.

Also Thanksgiving (like most holidays) is based on a mythical interpretation of actual events, as well as a combining them with older, less organized traditions (dating back to the settlers' ancestors in Europe). Harvest festivals and giving thanks for good crops have been around for pretty much all of history. The actual making it a national holiday and the tradition of celebrating it every year on the last Thursday of November was done for the first time by Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

All because I don't live in America and I'm not American and so therefore us Britons don't usually celebrate it.

Even as a vegetarian I am of the opinion that a full roast turkey is one of the most wonderful looking foods in existence.

I'd still never eat one, but I like looking at them and saying "Damn that is a fine looking turkey." :yogi:

Had some very juicy Cajun Turkey today. Very spicy and very tasty. Also got to devour some delicious cake balls and I plan on pigging out on Pecan Pie later tonight.

This is the first Thanksgiving in a long time where I was too sick to eat much. Not that I cared because the ham I had wasn't that spectacular (I'm not really a fan of turkey, unless it's fried). It was also the first Thanksgiving without my uncle. It makes me kind of sad that I missed dinner with my parents tonight because of other familial obligations with my husband's family, but we still visited them and that's what counts. I'm hoping that I'll be better before the weekend so I can at least enjoy some of this holiday before I go back to work on Monday.

This and more BUT I think some holidays need to be viewed from a different point of view and new way of thinking, not so much the true background of a festival but what it means now. Of course this might be like Christmas to me, a good time to buy stuff and get drunk but I would like to think some people can use Thanksgiving as a way to make amends. To give true thanks to people in America (and the world), people in their lives and be more open minded about diversity because frankly USA IS an immigrant country.

This is not to say the sins of the father should be forgot but instead faced, dead in the eyes so it does not happen again and that the lesson is learned. Maybe this is idealistic of me haha

Now Football fever I have no positive new way to think of that, it is just crazy. I am close minded regardless mindless repetition of stereotypes and archetypal behavior.

But yeah, give thanks to what you have, remember those which suffered and open your arms to difference. Though I actually do not know when Thanksgiving was or is.

Anyways, Thanksgiving wasn't anything special for me, though I may be forgetting something sicne it happened last month. My cousins came over, we played some Brawl, and we ate some dry turkey. Exciting.
