Tuesday evening an 7.0 earthquake struke the Caribbean country of Haiti. Haiti has already been ruined by political unrest and many tropical cyclones but now as many as 100,000 to 500,000 people could have been killed. The capital building was destroyed, the entire capital called Port-Au-Prince is likely ruined, many shantytowns and villages are unrecongizeable. My opinion is that Haiti will totally collapse and the US will take over the country.

Jeez! I knew that the earthquake was the worst Haitian earthquake in 200 years, but up to 500,000 people dead? That's awful. I feel I should mention that the phone lines in Haiti are down and it is almost impossible to contanct anybody there.

That being said, I think the idea that America will take over Haiti is silly. One, there's no reason to take over Haiti and it'd cost more than it would be worth, and two because if the earthquake is devastating enough to completely destroy Haiti's country and government, there probably won't be anything left on Haiti that America will want anyways. Plus no Americans would want to go there. It's not like they're going to say "Oh hey, this place was just hit by an earthquake that completely annihilated the civilization, but what the hey, let's move there, even though it'd be much more safe in the US! Let's not even worry about how Haiti was already having problems before the earthquake even struck!" So yeah, that's probably not going to happen.
That's assuming that things even get that bad in the first place. Canadians and Americans (not sure about what other countries are doing) are already trying to aid Haiti as much as possible, I figure, although it's entirely possible that I may be wrong, that the UN, Red Cross, etc. are going to urge people across the globe to help the Haitians in their time of need.

Yeah, I heard about this earthquake this morning. Thank God I live in an area where you're safe from most major natural disasters.

Up to 500,000 people dead, that's just terrible. And then there's those people who're seriously injured, or who've lost friends and family, and their homes...I honestly can't imagine.

Haiti can't be saved. It will take a ton of money to rebuild the infrastructure and Haiti can't pay for it. So who's going to pay to build the entire capital city and the outlying villages. How many people would still want to even live there.

I heard about it this morning, sounds like it was really rough. I heard that some people had to dig through the rubble with their hands to get to their loved ones who were trapped underneath the buildings. It really feel fortunate that I live in an area that is not prone to earthquakes because I would not want to go through that.

And Derek's thread creating pattern continues.

Anyway yeah I heard about this but I also heard that they don't have much information about how bad it was yet, just that it was pretty bad. So... good job jumping the gun on the US taking over Haiti?

(Why would the US even WANT to do that anyway?)

Is it just me or have there been a numerous amount of earthquakes lately?

Anyway, what happened to Haiti is devastating, but the thought of the US taking over Haiti is just dumb. It's already been explained, so I'm not going over it.

Just like the U.S. to attack the weak and the helpless. In fact, they probably created the whole earthquake in the first place just so they could take over Haiti in their weak and vulnerable state. Those elitist pricks.

I disagree. Everyone agrees is an absolute tragedy and I'm sure everyone wishes the best for everyone affected by it.

There is no debate on the issue. What can be said has been and posting here won't help them either.

A better use of people's time would be to go to the DEC website and actively help out the effort to provide aid.

well we could talk about bill clinton's plan to rape haiti with tourist traps and sweatshops

or about how this didn't happen in a vacuum, and there is going to be further US intervention in their political system, like the 2004 coup

It's not outside the realm of possibility but California's West Coast sits directly on a fault line so all buildings are reinforced to withstand the insane releases of frictional force. The best option is to assume that any magnitude is possible and prepare for the worst.

Also, to add some more color to this thread, Rush Limbaugh lambasting White House's relief efforts.

Yes, this is truly a sad time for Haiti, but they've gone through similar times, I'm sure things will get better soon.

OR maybe that 2012 movie was right, before the major events happened, regular feelable earthquakes were frequently occuring everyday. Perhaps this is only the beginning of many more earthquakes to come for the next two years.

I'll admit that I laughed at that UP, but stop joking around. Apparently 200,000 are dead, and things are really taking a turn for the worse over there.

Every cloud has a silver lining though, I suppose. It's pretty great to see how everybody's contributing to try and help Haiti, or at least where I live. How many of you guys have donated money to the Relief programs yet? I donated $10. Not that much, but it's a start.

That's a bit of a shocker. You're on wobbly territory there.

Seriously, it's not funny. Check out this shocking video of how horrific the Earthquake was.

It's a terrible tragedy, but frankly, the whole "ZOMG HAITI'S GON' GET TAKEN OVER BY TEH US!!111" thing is kind of dumb.

I haven't done anything yet, but if I can find a way to do so locally, I will.

And is it wrong that I laughed at those jokes? I dunno. I guess I just like dark humor. :/
