First off, no offense to any fanfic writers here. When fanfiction is written well, it can be enjoyable and satisfies the reader, feeling even like it was part of canon. I myself read several things here. But there are some things that simply should not be written about, or, more commonly, have been infested by terrible stories.

I also had a lengthy IM conversation while doing this, which can be found at http://z10.invisionfree.com/Game_0ver/i ... st=0&#last if you're interested. Warning, some profane language. Oh, and we reference some GS1, 2, and 4 spoilers in frustration.

-----------------------------------------------

A Case Study in Idiocy and Fans

An Analytical Study of Fanfiction.net

Fanfiction.net is a terrifying place. One may enter it and peruse the vast collection of stories there for hours, without ever finding anything of any value. Today I will show you the worst of the worst, in this case study in Fanfiction.net.

Let us begin with the categories. A quick look around revealed the following categories, which should probably never be read.

The Bible (2,197 stories)
Homer (167 stories)
Hunchback of Notre Dame (47 stories)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (656 stories)
Shakespeare (948 stories)
Harry Potter (294,513 stories)
Codename: Kids Next Door (1,701 stories)
Danny Phantom (6,313 stories)
Ed, Edd, and Eddy (852 stories)
Kim Possible (3930 stories)
Teen Titans (20338 stories)
Gummi Bears (77 stories)
Calvin & Hobbes (417 stories)
Spider-Man (1370 stories)
X-Men (7821 stories)
Banjo-Kazooie (109 stories)
Disgaea (132 stories)
Earthbound (150 stories)
Final Fantasy VII (17471 stories)
Kingdom Hearts (21832 stories)
Harvest Moon (1529 stories)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (189 stories)
Pokemon (15291 stories)
Sonic the Hedgehog (8678 stories) (BEWARE AT ALL COSTS)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Crossovers (4834 stories)
Anime Crossovers (6208 stories)
Gundam Wing/Sailor Moon (2658 stories)
Jesus Christ Superstar (58 stories)
Game Crossovers (1335 stories)
Sailor Moon Crossovers (3470 stories)
Musicals/Plays (3960 stories)
Wrestling (11682 stories)
Marching Band (1191 stories)
Pirates of the Caribbean (11968 stories)
Napoleon Dynamite (45)

There are still many more to be found.

-------------------------------------------------------

That's it for part 1. It's brief, but I'll add onto it later.

It's marginally better since they removed the erotica section, I'll give it that.

Why am I not surprised at the amount of Harry Potter and Pirates of The Carribean fanfiction out there? Still, I'd actually like to read more of this case study when you finish this up, Bolt Storm.

Any opinions on the MST3K-ed fanfiction that's out there? I really liked reading those.

You gotta kind of understand the culture of FF.net these days, though. It's not really about fics anymore at all. It's all about people posting whatever they feel like, and getting shallow praise from people who might like the same thing they do. It's an ego stroke, plain and simple, and it's kinda sad. But that's why a lot of seriousfanfiction authors don't post exclusively on ff.net if they can help it.

It's so much easier to get stories that are...well, good, by going to a forum, LJ, homepage, etc.

I understand that completely, Croik. I used to frequent it a few years back, and the state of things was much better then. You could actually see higher-quality fiction all over the place, without digging through pages upon pages of... muck.

I'm a litte surprised at the Fic count for Pokemon and Game Crossovers. I was expecting both to have more, oddly.

^^ Ah the days of my youth, like the scent of fresh lemon you see Grossburg (No fanfiction slang jokes please.)

I remember back when I used to write HORRIBLE HORRIBLE digimon and Dragonball Z fanfictions. Good times. Good times. I've already started writing Phoenix Wright fanfictions, but I have enough sense not to post tehm. Well... Not until they're finished anyway! Von Karma

Still I feel your pain. A lot of fanfictions are just basically just random whims written out, not well thought out at all... Very much like my random doodles now that I think about it... No one really tries to keep people in character anymore. Characters we all know and love are twisted way out of their original framework. ... Actually we do that here too, don't we? Ack I'm very lost now... I don't know WHAT to think anymore! Larry

Fanfiction.net has bred a culture of whimsy and deceit, where it is impossible to give a honest review without having a horde of rabid dogs being sent at your poor IM's inbox, devouring coherent thought and dissolving anything resembling a calm and collected response.

I don't think that FF.net is that bad. But then again, I've never really bothered too much to look at other places. That's not because I'm content with FF.net, though- LJ is blocked in this country (counting the months until I graduate and move out of China), and half of the fansites where I expect to find good fics (because when I wasn't living in China I found good fics there) are either slow or blocked. I need some sort of a workaround for this...

See, The difference between the CR’s stuff and the ones on Fanfic is a very noticeable one. Some people do take characters out of their original design but that tends to happen. However, when a person on CR write a great fanfic with the characters still in character, it get notice and praised. Then it eventually it becomes popular. (Here's Looking at CTFT and Croik!) On Fanfic.net, it just gets lose among the sea of waste or intelligence. Ema

An awful lot of flaming you did there...

Anyway, Fanfiction.net isn't that bad. It's the only place I can easily post any of my stuff. But, yeah. It takes an awful lot of sifting through the junk to find an original or at least decent story.

I steer clear of whatever's just plain poorly written, but I still see a lot of been-there-done-that stuff in my fandoms (often causing me to lose interest in said fandoms).
"Starfire lurves Robin but Robin pays no atention 2 her!" stuff in Teen Titans.
"_____Clan she-cat likes a tom in another CLan! Oh, what to do?!" stuff in Warriors - I like that series, don't hurt me. Or at least I used to before I started hating Firestar.
And so much Franziska and PhoenixMiles stuff in PW. I like Franziska, but I'd like to see more of a mix.

Finding good fanfictions is extremely rare on FF.net. You have to search high and low for decent ones.

The trend I hate the most is characters in high school AKA High School fics.

Fanfiction in general irritates me greatly. Stealing other people's ideas and violating copyright is never, ever okay. Edgeworth

I will agree, though, that FFNet blows hard. I used to geek around there (reading Halo fics, no less), and most of the stuff on there is absolutely rancid. And scary. Seriously, Red vs Blue slashfic? DO NOT WANT.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, show me, define me! I am the infinite telomerase! I am not an anti-existence! I AM THE PERFECT MISSINGNO.--er, chain!
