That's true because people nowadays have a pretty ambiguous concept of love. They either think it's about going on dates, making out, exchanging flowers and cheey lines, or just plain sex; and friends are just people they hang out with. In actuality, love is on the same level as friendship: both happen to bloom when there's a genuine mutual feeling. :/

i think its better to have a strong support network around you or an emotional anchor than to have a "relationship" that is "lust based"

Agreed. A strong support network is obviously much healthier.
It's especially true for me. Even though I'm jittery about romantic relationships, I love my friends and family to death and value my relationships with them more than anything.
