That is a very interesting question, George. A year or two ago, my answer would've been quite different. Back then, I was pretty sure we didn't have a future. She lives a state away, comes from a rather strict background, and our acquaintanceship had a slightly bumpy start. Over time, though, things have been occurring between us that have made me begin to rethink that assumption. I had to cut my hair to walk down the aisle with her at my cousin's wedding, but that same day we got to talking and I was surprised at how well we were getting along. Then our paths crossed at a music festival. My hair had regrown but she registered no negative reaction to it and not only was it surprisingly easy to start conversations with her, but she was taking some initiative as well. Even when discussions turned to theology, we were largely in agreement. We ended up spending most of those three days together and everything new that I learned about her suggested that we were of one mind. Suffice it to say that the ice was breaking like nobody's business. And then there's the funeral. That chain of events has caused me to wonder if something permanent was built that summer. I know it sounds corny, but none of my previous relationships with women have followed this pattern and...I've never felt quite this way before.

To answer your question, I'm cautiously optimistic. I was definitely smitten by the end of the festival and though I let the fire mellow into what I thought was mere intellectual curiosity, it would appear that there's still a bit more to it than that. I would like to keep in closer touch with her, though I'm a little uncertain as to how to go about doing that without putting up red flags. ...Do you think I have a shot?

It sounds like you guys have spent a decent amount of time together and are pretty friendly with each other already, Gregory. If it were me, I would go ahead and keep in touch with her and toss away any fears of red flags (nothing out of place about contacting a friend, right?), but that's just the way I go about things; I'm relatively direct. I've heard from you that you have had more success going the indirect route. But whatever route you go, it seems like you've got a friendly girl you'd be pursuing, a girl who is easy to talk to and who likes talking to you, so I think you've got a pretty good shot, actually.

As for the red flags, meh. When you contact someone, you're showing interest in them, no matter who it is. Depending on who it is, you have different degrees of interest, but it's still interest. I wouldn't worry much about these supposed red flags. If she's got some interest in you, anyway (like she seems to), she'll enjoy hearing from you :edgy:

I agree with you, George. Showing interest in keeping contact with eachother never hurts, especially when both are already friends with eachother.

That's very encouraging to hear. And you know, I think you're probably right. One of the most interesting things about this particular woman is that while she is generally quite reserved, none of my advances--if such indeed they can be called--up to this point appear to have repelled her in any way. In fact there's evidence that they've attracted her. It's rather...liberating. I think I will see about establishing a more reliable means of communication. My only link to her right now is my cousin and his wife, but the fact that I never got to talk to her at the funeral would make decent grounds for expressing interest in direct correspondence and the last time I asked him about her, he told me that "we're hoping someone steals her away". If I'm reading this right, he might very well be quite happy to help strengthen the link between us. And since my letters tend to have a lot of humor in them, she'd probably enjoy them immensely. -Don't mention it in a context where she might be embarassed (other people are around).
-Don't bring the subject up if she's uncomfortable, angry, or in a hurry.
-Don't bring the subject up suddenly, without leading up to the idea in conversation first.

Seriously, it's important to use your intuition in a social setting. For god's sake, look at her (that doesn't mean stop and stare awkwardly in the middle of conversation!). What is the expression on her face? What does her body language tell you? Is she happy that you're around? Or does your presence agitate her?

You can tell if your advances might be welcomed by picking up these clues from observation.

We're friends, so I don't think I agitate her. If I do, she hasn't communicated that to me. We joke around alot. Today we threw chicken at a guy we didn't like. I guess she's happy around me.

I wish to congratulate you on daring to take the risk and can sympathize with a liking for a relaxed relationship, but I must confess that this bit about "neediness" touches a sore spot of mine. Assuming that we're being careful not to use the word "neediness" too broadly, I see nothing wrong with it. But some of us more sensitive men have been royally burned by women who have a special animus against "neediness". We've had our intentions subjected to unjust suspicion and ultimately been told to hit the road, only to see men we know to be untrustworthy get a pass because of their skill at playing it cool. The message we've gotten out of such encounters is that honesty and tenderness are not appreciated. This is not to say that I think you're that type, but I'd recommend keeping that hatred for "neediness" under careful scrutiny. :phoenix:

I recently asked out a guy friend of mine (beat him to it apparantly XD He was gonna ask my out this weekend) and now we're going out. It's really nice and chilled out, no neediness *hates neediness* and we're seeing a film and going to a gig today :) *happy happy*

I wish to congratulate you on daring to take the risk and can sympathize with a liking for a relaxed relationship, but I must confess that this bit about "neediness" touches a sore spot of mine. Assuming that we're being careful not to use the word "neediness" too broadly, I see nothing wrong with it. But some of us more sensitive men have been royally burned by women who have a special animus against "neediness". We've had our intentions subjected to unjust suspicion and ultimately been told to hit the road, only to see men we know to be untrustworthy get a pass because of their skill at playing it cool. The message we've gotten out of such encounters is that honesty and tenderness are not appreciated. This is not to say that I think you're that type, but I'd recommend keeping that hatred for "neediness" under careful scrutiny. :phoenix:

Haha, don't get me wrong, I don't mind if he 'needs' me on and off, I just had a terrible experiance with a dependant guy (actually had the disorder) and so I can't take too much, or I start getting really down. I did tell my bf I have trouble showing affection too and he's been awesome about all that stuff :) We had a really nice day and ended up staying at my house rather than going to the gig, where he played guitar and sang and I was all 'O_O' because he's scarily good at both! We also chatted for hours and hours, which I think/hope is a good sign! *off on a tangent again D:*
Anyways, yes...I'm just making sure we go slow and he doesnt get really attatched to me before I get attatched to him >>; Things can become a bit awkward if that happens. BUT! All is going nicely and the first date thing was very nice ^^

PS I do appreciate honesty and tenderness, I just hate being expected to give the tenderness back early on (I take a while to feel safe enough)

Hi. I don't usually reply here, but I had to make the exception now. I only want to say that I like reading Greg's texts. Your English is rich and it's just nice to read. (And it forces me to check new words on the dictionary. :D Which is like really good, since I am motivated to learn more and more.)

It's awesome, that some people still write good English (or any other language) even on the Internet. I think my Finnish has suffered a bit because of all this surfing. Ok, I think it's enough of this, I apologize about this off topic.

To make this post at least some what related I shall type something about girls. Or about that certain girl. I think our feelings might be mutual. Some sort of glances can be detected. In Finland it would be called "silmäpeli". I have no idea if you have a corresponding word.

But I am not even sure of my own feelings right now. It's because the reason I fell for her is not too credible. It started, when I joked to my friend, that I had a crush on this someone. But she didn't really acknowledge I was joking (the conversation was held through msn so misinterpretations are easier). And then she was thinking that maybe I'm talking about this girl she was familiar with. And of course I played along.

Then I had to confirm if we were really talking about the same person. (Well, we kind of weren't, since I started the joke with another girl.) I was supposed to ask "do you play this and that?" and "do you know my friend x?". But when I intended to ask those questions, I started acting like I really had some deeper feelings toward her. (I was nervous and lacked confidence etc.) Then I just continued to act like I really had some deeper feelings toward her. It was weird.

After that I my emotions have gone through a roller coaster (a while I thought this thing was over) but over this time period I have became more infatuated with her.

I'm unsure if this is just a big oversized joke that I just feeded and feeded and it has since become almost real in my eyes. Or if there really is something more to it. I still kind of like this situation since I have no idea where it'll lead.

All I know is that this post is boring and way too lengthy (and I use these brackets too much). I really should stop now. But I think that the story is a bit funny though, I just couldn't summarize it. Should have pressed "Submit" after those first two chapters...
