Well, it's time to add Bielorussian to the list of languadges I know. It wasn't very hard to learn, because I'm Ukrainian and those langs are similar. For example (UA -> BL) Divchina -> Dziavchina; tarelka -> talerka (you didn't notice difference in second one on the first try, did you not?)

I'm also curious. Did someone learn Russian? That's my first languadge, so it's given for me, but I want to know an opinion of other people, who doesn't live in Russia, neither in Ukraine, Bielorussia and Poland. Is Russian hard for you?

I'm pretty good at Irish, and I have enough French to carry out a conversation, but I'm not fluent at all. I want to learn more languages, but they only do Irish and French at my school, and both are compulsory.

I had a few Russian lessons and found it VERY hard- the pronunciation is unlike anything I've had to deal with before. The Cyrillic script was okay to read though, once you got the hang of it.

That's right, the pronunciation is very different. I can't get rid of a certain accent when I'm speaking English, and I'm learning it for twelve or something like that years. For example I can't help saying hard "r" sometimes. Or even saying "th" as "z". That's all the lack of practice. I don't speak much for real.
Knowing more than one or two similar languadges is hard because you say same things different ways.
By the way, though I'm living in Ukraine, Ukrainian is far harder languadge for me than any other I've ever learned. When I consume whole Polish in a year, I have big problems with Ukrainian. It's a shame, actually.

I want to learn Russian when I'm older. It might be easier for me than for a native speaker, because Serbian and Russian are both Slavic languages, but my mom had to learn Russian when she was a girl in Yugoslavia, and she said it was incredibly difficult. However, she's been living in Canada for more than a decade, and has a lot of troubles with English - so maybe she's just not good at learning languages.

I took a year of Spanish in middle school, but it didn't stick in my mind. I know just about what the average American knows in Spanish.

I'm in my third year of French, so I know quite a bit more about it. I'm still nowhere near being fluent, and it's pretty difficult for me. I can most likely understand what's said if I can read it a few times, but as for listening to it, that's another story. Native French speakers speak too fast for me to understand them at first, but if they repeat it slowly I may get it.

I can speak English, Chinese, Japanese and (badly) Korean. ^^ Knowing Chinese (my first language) helps a lot in Japanese and Korean, because of the kanji and sentence structure.

There are two, and then there are the dialects. The only dialects I know of is Shanghai-ese, and Beijingese.

This language needs to be made official. Now.

This may be slightly off-topic, but my english teacher spends about half of the class just randomly speaking french and spanish. Lol.

Y'know, since I came to Japan I've met a lot of Chinese people who can speak perfect Korean. I think they told me it depends on the region or something, but it was really surprising.

But anyway, how did you fare with formal speech in Japanese(-desu -masu etc.)? I've heard that Chinese doesn't have stuff like that, which I could see back in language school when some of the students spoke very(but unintentionally) impolitely to the teachers.

P.S.- You probably speak better Korean than I do. :V

O.O

I have any idea about german XDD!
My french teacher is such a stupid, I don't like her anything. That may be the reason why it is pretty difficult for me to learn this language. And a top of that, She is my english teacher too! I hate her ^_^.
I am learning english by myself and I have a particular teacher. So I have mistakes when it comes time to write, but I am improving every day.
My brother is learning norwegian and he teachs me some words. It's so funny to pronounce them.
My brother is my idol, he knows english perfectly and a lot of languages. I hope be like him in the future.

My great-uncle knew Serbian, English, German, French and Polish.
He learned German and French during WW2, when he was held a Prisoner of War in Germany. When the Americans came over, he learned English and translated the German to English for their benefit.
I don't know how he learned Polish, but apparantly he spoke it like a native.

Correction: English system. The Scottish do education differently.

I got a grade 1 on my last Spanish writing, which is the best at the level I'm doing. I might do the higher level (literally known as Higher) next year.

English is my first language, because I come from a household where people do not speak any other language. But, since it was mandatory in my high school district to study a second language, I decided to pick Italian, as my family is Italian-American. As of today, I am studying Italian for the 5th year in a row as a freshman in college.

I'd love to learn Japanese. But for now, I speak Croatian aside from English. Also, since I'm from Canada, its impossible to NOT pick up any French, so although I'm not fluent in it, I do understand and speak a very little bit of it as well.

I took French between grades 4-11 but I barely remember any of it since they didn't actually teach us things like grammar till grade 10.

Currently taking Japanese but still a far ways from being able to translate/read/speak it well.

My first language is English, and then I learned some Japanese in high school and forgot most of it. I didn't learn all that much anyways.

How I learned German is a bit of a long story. I got bored once and started playing Zelda 64 in German because I already beat it in English. I found that I could deduce what most words were, and then ended up picking up the grammar and everything else. And now I do the same thing with other games like Phoenix Wright, Terranigma and Zelda.

I was born in Japan, so Japanese is my native language, but I moved to America when I was 6 years old. I can read it (Hiragana and katanana, not kanji lol) but I can't write it. Spanish is the only foreign language offered at my high school, but I don't even bother to say I know Spanish, because I have no interest in it and I forgot most of it anyways lol. I've been working on relearning Japanese and I am going to take Japanese at my university. :)

I can use a more universal French too, if I have to speak with a french person from another place. I can speak, write, read and understand english. I know a few spanish and japanese words. And finally I know some latin too (Some words, phrases, and more than 200 names of plants and flowers...)
