Since when were undead not magical creatures?
Typically they are created through purely magical processes via necromancy or a curse, especially in the case of vampires is it often called a curse in fiction.

Something is seriously wrong here when we're trying to put too much logic behind fiction. What was the point of the genre again? Oh right. To escape from reality.

Rule #1. There are no rules for writing fiction.
Rule #2. Nitpicking little details in fiction is dumb.

If you want to be picky over Twilight just keep in mind that Stephanie Meyer is a horrible writer. I could probably poop out a teen novel that's better than her works. My major isn't even English. Hell, with my major I have the potential to create drugs that MAKE you a better writer. I'll be raking in the dough in no time.

I'm tired of everyone saying "still a better love story than Twilight." For once I want someone to say, "Still a better love story than Sword Art Online."

Whoever says it will be showered with internet cookies by yours truly. (::) (::) (::)

Twilight is more mainstream than SAO. Also, it's much easier to Twilight than SWORD ART ONLINE. I wasn't just saying that xxx is a better love story than Twilight (which is true) I'm also criticizing Meyer's horrid skills as a writer. Being a fake writer both in my past and next life, I can confidentially say whatever I want with regards to writing. You can even say I created the whole idea of writing stuff on paper to communicate.

Just finished reading the Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy, by K.W. Jeter. Had them for ages, never got round to actually reading them, glad I did now. Copious amounts of Boba Fett, explosions, intrigue and conspiracies.

I agree with Blak. I have no idea what Sword Art Online is - a manga, an MMO or an anime? - nor do I know what particular character you are talking about. But I can understand why people say that even a mediocre love story is better than Twilight.
Bella wants Edward... cause he's a vampire, which she apparently finds super-hot. They get married... because I don't know. Bella is continuously switching between Eddie and Jacky, obviously has chemistry with Jacky, who is also willing to abandon his pack to be with her and is good for her, Bella is obviously very comfortable in his presence and can talk to him about stuff she can't Eddie... and yet she remains with Eddie cause... he's a vampire, I suppose.

Although I wish people would also stop saying that "Romeo and Juliette is the best love story ever" which it isn't. It's about two young, rebellious kids who fall in love at first sight, their parents hate that they like the other and their rebelliousness tells them to stay even more with that person, miscommunication and ends in both of their deaths.
It's not so much a love story as it is.... a cautionary tale for parents, I guess.

I guess people who think RxJ is the best love story ever are the kind of people who think it's romantic to die for your loved one. Which I don't think it is. It's stupid. Heck, I would say Romeo and Juliet were stupid because they proved by killing themselves, that they can't live without the other and are extremely weak.
But I blame the families for that, as Romeo and Juliet were each other's first love, so they had no idea - all they had were hormones working for the first time and their brain and body flooded with endorphines. So, technically, they were insane and couldn't think clearly.

Well, something good did come out of their deaths. The two families realized how foolishly foolish they were acting. *tries not to laugh*

Well I'm not sure, back in those days afterlife's were all the rage before the great march of agnosticism and atheism these days. It's possible dying for your loved one back then was a means of seeing them sooner in the eyes of the audience.

It can be romantic to die for the one you love, I guess. Just not for any of the reasons Romeo and Juliet had. "Because I can't live without you"? Strange...seems to me you had a life before this person and were living it just fine.

And yes, there were people who did consider Romeo and Juliet the greatest love story ever. These are the same folks who think that constant rescuing is a vital part of any relationship, that you have to stop your entire world to revolve it around this person, and/or that if you're not in torturous agony, then you must not be in love. Which is really interesting when you think about Twilight and the mirrors there. I don't read the books but once in a while I'll watch a movie for the lulz when I'm really bored. There was a scene from the second movie where a miserable Bella throws herself into a lake (or some huge body of water). Why? Because Edward dumps her. He has his own reasons for dumping her, but it doesn't take her long to attempt suicide over it. (At least, that's what it looked like in the movie. It can be difficult to gauge characters' feelings and motives with all the terrible dialogue and wooden acting. And later on, I think Edward tries to get himself killed too, but I'm not sure of the reason there.)

And technically, Romeo had a love before Juliet. I believe that's who he was still mooning over the night he met Juliet. Looks like some habits are hard to break.

From what I get, Edward breaks up with Bella cause he "loves her too much" - or will make her unhappy, I don't know. Stupid reason like that. And Bella... somehow... has visions of Edward when she is in peril.... so she isn't technically committing suicide, she's just doing reckless things like throwing herself off cliffs into the sea, ride a motorcycle right into a boulder - that part never made much sense as to being in danger. Looked to me like she was just going 20 feet and not a very fast pace and then rolled off. A few bruises at the most. Not enough to really injure yourself.
And Eddy wants to commit suicide cause he heard Bella died, but it wasn't really Bella who died...

I don't remember a love being mentioned for Romeo prior to Juliette.
But then, I never paid much attention to that thing. Killing yourself because your loved one is gone is just a huge proof to me that you are a weakling. Then again, a ton of people are still going for the "One True Love" idea, completely ignoring the fact that - yes, there might be someone who is pretty much perfect for you - but that there are also a ton of "Right" people in the world. It just takes some time, maybe some effort and a little luck to find them.

Fiction Rules versus Reality Rules. In fiction it's perfectly plausible for 'one true love' to apply.
Besides in Juliet's case wasn't there a load of guilt on her behalf for inadvertantly causing Romeo's death?

Also isn't it set in like Renaissance Italy or something? If either one of them walked away while the other appeared dead who's to say the rival family wouldn't have entered into all-out war and killed them anyway.

If anything the sacrifice prevented both sides from escalating their conflict as mentioned earlier as no doubt the families would have blamed the survivor for the other's death.

Eh... was this in one of the movies? Because I kind of recall her waking up only long enough to realize that he poisoned himself without leaving any for her too. And then she improvises with the dagger.

Romeo had a thing a girl named Rosaline. He was going to the ball, hoping he'd run into her, but he found Juliet instead.

Yeah that was in the movie. I remember watching it as a freshman in high school and everyone shouted in excitement when we got to see Juliet's boobs.
Analyzing stuff like the masculinity of Juliet and femininity of Romeo was pretty fun.

I started reading an English translation of Eugene Onegin a few days ago. It's proven to be a much more enjoyable read now that I'm reading it for fun rather than because I have to read it for a class. Recently, I came across two stanzas that I found amusing when read from a modern perspective, though I imagine Pushkin had something different in mind when he wrote them:

Spoiler: Stanzas from Eugene Onegin
Time was, with grave and measured diction,
A fervent author used to show
The hero in his work of fiction
Endowed with bright perfection's glow.
He'd furnish his beloved child--
Forever hounded and reviled--
With tender soul and manly grace,
Intelligence and handsome face.
And nursing noble passion's rages,
The ever dauntless hero stood
Prepared to die for love of good;
And in the novel's final pages,
Deceitful vice was made to pay
And honest virtue won the day.

But now our minds have grown inactive,
We're put to sleep by talk of "sin";
Our novels too make vice attractive,
And even there it seems to win.
It's now the British Muse's fables
That lie on maidens' bedside tables
And haunt their dreams. They worship now
The Vampire with his pensive brow,
Or gloomy Melmoth, lost and pleading,
The Corsair, or the Wandering Jew,
And enigmatic Sbogar too.
Lord Byron, his caprice succeeding,
Cloaked even hopeless egotism
In saturnine romanticism.

I was immediately reminded of Mary Sue stories (though one couplet also made me think of Twilight).

Also, have you watched any of the movies with Robert Downey Jr. (guy who plays Iron Man)?

I hear really good things about them, but I haven't watched any of them.

Like I said before, RDJ plays Iron Man/Tony Stark in the live-action Marvel movies. Not sure, if he was in anything animated, though.

The Soviets made a Sherlock Holmes TV series shortly before the Union broke up. I've only seen clips, but I've heard good things about it. Vasily Livanov apparently got an Order of the British Empire for his portrayal of Holmes.

you should try reading the whole 2 volumes by sir arthur conan doyle. or you can start with 'the sign of four'. i would also recommend 'the adventure of the dying detective' it's one of the shorter mysteries, but ti's my favorite.

i kind of stay away from those written by other authors though, which is weird because i actually liked the movies (with RDJ), and i love the bbc's sherlock.

I watched both of them. Eh, they both had funny moments at times. Parts of it were very nicely done and Robert's movements during the fight scene in the beginning of the first movie was wonderful to look at, mostly because he was once trained to be a ballet dancer.
Overall, though, I guess the second movie was more interesting. We have the appearance of Moriarty. And Stephen Fry plays Sherlock's brother. Definitely his parts were more on the comedic side, I think the entire movie was a bit more on the funny side, but still stayed dramatic.

Now I'm reading my twenty-issue volume of the classic Amazing Spider-Man comics. I got it today at my usual comic book store since today was free comic book day.

I think I'll stick to reading the older Spider-Man comics since I feel uncomfortable reading the new Superior Spider-Man books. I really tried to get into them but...

Spoiler:
It doesn't feel right having Peter Parker dead and Dr. Octopus running around in his body acting completely out of character for Spider-Man :sadshoe:

The best Sherlock Holmes series IMHO, is still Granada's Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. He was absolutely amazing as Holmes.

Finished Yokomizo Seishi's Kindaichi Kousuke no Kikan / The Return of Kindaichi Kousuke, a short story collection starring the famous detective (the grandpa Kindaichi Hajime refers to in the Kindaichi Case Files). All of the short stories here were later expanded upon for novelletes / novels, and that was probably for the best. Yokomizo is an amazing writer, but his trademark 'even-though-it-is-postwar-it-feels-like-pre-war-horror' vibe doesn't really come alive in these stories, and the plots themselves are either too easy or too obvious a rip-off of other books.

I am reading fanfics.

I am reading a lovely Wreck-It-Ralph fanfic that has but me on the edge of my seat and nearly made me cry and it actually makes the Ralph/Venellope ship work.

I am also reading a Little Mermaid fanfic that builds Ariel's relationship with Urchin. (He's a merboy from the animated series who is close friends with Ariel, he even had a crush on her.)

And a Twilight fanfic where Edward cheats on Bella with an old flame.......What? At least Edward is flawed now.

Nothing makes that work, you should be ashamed for considering it.

I'm having trouble picturing Ralph and Vanellope as a couple, but then again, this is fan fiction we're talking about. If there's a way to make it work, you can be sure someone will find it.

He was flawed to begin with. He's, like, over 100 years old and has failed to grow a personality in that time.

I'm reading the latest book I have in my Alice McKinley series 'Alice on Board' for the third or fifth time. I'm sure the next book is out again, but I'm in germany and I don't know entirely, also the money issue with not being able to ship it over...

Ah, ames Luceno, why couldn't you have written the prequels? They might have been good then...

But yeah, 'tis good, and straight up says the explanation given for midi-chlorians in the phantom menace was outright wrong. So there's that.

Anything is possible with fanfiction, and if you guys get your minds out of the gutter you can see that.

Like, I once read an awesome Beauty and the Beast fanfiction that made Gaston/Belle passable.

I don't have so much a problem with fanfiction as I go with phrases like "That made Gaston/Belle passable" because fanfiction is inherently uncanon, working with false interpretations of the original characters. Therefore the envisioned pairings are actually not passable because they never occur in the core of the character.

People deviate from the original characters and write them how they want to see them which changes everything.
It is not 'passable' because the pairings are no longer talking about the same characters, just some bastardised romanticised wishwash of what they were.

Oh dear...I just bashed fanfiction on an AA site....hmm I foresee a drop in popularity.
