It was on the 3000 meters skating for woman. Fun fact, the difference between the number three and four was only 0,07 seconds.

Odd. Vancouver said that no gold medals have been given out. Wait for speedskating, Cindy, don't get overexcited. I cheer for her. Anyway, someone died before it opened, I watched the opening ceremony live, and I'm only 2 provinces east of Vancouver. Yay!... Now what? We're finally getting better.

Oh, and the opening ceremony was impressive, but not like China at all. China is much better.

EDIT: antonis, STFU. I agree with justis76, you wanker. (I like British terms)

Also, we asked for less snow, but not at THIS time. It's over 10C at Vancouver, right? Because they need our weather and Winterpeg Frostbiters want to rather practice here than in Vancouver. Wait, they are the Frostbiters or the Killers? I don't remember. :zenitora:

EDIT2: London gets the next Olympics (2012), Сочи got 2014, Rio got 2016 and the following years are being decided- 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024, and 2028. For 2018, it's being chosen between Annecy, Munich, and PyeongChang. I vote Munich.

I love practicing sports, but I can't bear watching it on TV. Maybe this'll be an exception, as I never watched the Winter Olympics before... I'll see what's it about!

Actually there was only 3 people in the room, so it wasn't that spectacular. But it's the thought that counts. It's about time Canada got some gold on the home turf!

When I checked the news this morning, I saw that Canada was tied for 3rd place overall.
So far Antonis' prediction isn't very accurate. Ireland wasn't on the top five, and the US is currently at 1st place. I don't remember the other top teams, but I know France is tied with Canada.

if it's not too much work someone could write down in this topic the list of all the participating countries in the order of countries with highest ranking, and write how much medals of every sort they won, and update it every one or two days :edgy:
could that be a good idea ? (Justis ??)

Take it Great Britain haven't even won a bronze? Figures. We're never good at Winter Olympics.

Meh. I'm neither here nor there with the Winter Olympics. I watched a bit of it last night but it's no where near as incredible or exciting as the proper Summer Olympics.

Because Wikipedia is so reliable. -_-
Anyways, the top 5 countries (judged by how many medals they've recieved) as of this morning were

1) Germany: 9 medals
2) US: 8 medals
3) France: 7 medals
4) Canada: 5 medals
5) Korea: 4 medals

Woot, Canada won its second gold yesterday in women's snowboarding.

USA: 14 Medals
Germany: 10 Medals
France: 7 Medals
Canada: 6 Medals

Seems like France, Canada and Korea are all pretty close. It'll be interesting to see what happens next.

*Ahem* To quote a not-so-wise detective...

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!!

The Canadian Women's Hockey team has won the gold for our national sport, hockey!
We beat the American team 2-0. I find this hilarious, because in the men's hockey game earlier this week, America beat Canada (we're not out of it yet, though!) by 2 points. It seems that Canada finally made up for those two points. Oh, and won a gold medal while they're at it.

That being said, looking at the big picture, the USA is completely dominating the Olympics, as is to be expected.

YOU INSULT CURLING, YOU INSULT YOUR NORTHERN BROTHERS, YOU JERK!!!
YOU BETTER TAKE BACK YOUR REMARKS ABOUT CURLING RIGHT NOW, OR ELSE I'LL PERSONALLY TAKE A TRIP DOWN TO CALIFORNIA, OR CAROLINA, OR WHEREVER YOU LIVE, AND I WILL MESS YOU UP. AND WHEN I'M FINISHED WITH YOU, I'M GONNA DIP YOU IN A VAT OF MAPLE SYRUP TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY. THEN FEED YOUR REMAINS TO A MOOSE.

...Woops, looks like I got a bit carried away too. But seriously, don't diss up curling. It's kind of a big deal up in Canada, supposedly.

I had actually never heard of it before these events. I admit, it looks extremely complex. How DO they move that stone?...

By the way, who won for it?

I dunno, there have been a lot of curling matches. The championships haven't happened yet, so nobody's really won the entire curling event.

And there isn't any stones, just over-sized pucks as far as I know. Though I can't claim to be an expert on curling.

I did some research and it turns out that they're actually made from a special stone that only comes from Scotland.

I think I'll watch the curling championships. I am now intrigued.

Anyways, did anyone watch the women's figure skating tonight?? Holy crap, how amazing were those last four skaters!? Especially Kim Yuna. I was rooting for her the whole time and oh my god, she was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. From her performance, right down to her dress; everything about her was stunning. I was getting teary eyed from watching her!!

It's certainly been a great Olympics for Norway as well. Regrettably, I haven't found much time to watch this past weeks. But I see here that we have done a great job in cross-country skiing and ski shooting, the favourite sports of the Norwegians. The Winter Olympics is really enormously popular around here, which is pretty obvious when were competing against USA, Canada, Russia and Germany on the overall medal count.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... stpop_read

But anyway, all that really matters is that we beat Sweden! Gå Northug! (Kidding, I'm not that patriotic. I was happy when Björn Ferry won earlier.)

I'm not big on figure skating, but I saw the figure skating for the 1st place & third (Canadian! Woot!) place skaters.

Also, good news YG. Apparently the curling women's championship game is tonight. Canada versus...Finland? Switzerland? Sweden?
I can't remember, it was one of those countries.

Exciting curling final so far. The Swedish girls might have made it, but so far it seems like their scandinavian brothers shan't. Oh well. Fun to watch anyway, especially after a few white russians. Good luck, Canadians :)

Canada has the most gold medals now and is third in total amount of medals. Not only that, but Canada has now the most gold medals ever won on home soil in Olympic history. Fucking EH, Canada!

justis76 wrote:

wtf no it's not?

by the way, if this helps clear up anything from earlier: calling canada "snowy" doesn't apply what so ever to vancouver. if it snows 2 inches here the entire city shuts down. our having to import snow should be of no big surprise; it's definitely not a symptom of global warming. : ) the other day a news program had to explain that it was, in fact, winter here.

also: i hate the olympics.

I thought the opening ceremony was pretty nice. Vancouver already said right off the bat it's not going to be as good as Beijing's and I'm fine with that, because I don't want to get taxed even more to pay for something even more extravagant.

I live in Vancouver, so I was actually surprised how much stuff people can participate in without spending any money. I think being forced to go downtown like that to check out all the venues really got me hyped for the Olympics and that's quite a feat because usually I don't watch the Olympic events at all except for maybe ice dancing. I'm really falling in love with the mascots too, they're everywhere.

Also, did everyone see this fail article?

Anyways, GO CANADA!

I'm not usually into sports, but winter sports I like. That said, I don't watch winter olympics every waking moment, I just catch glimpses every now and then, like the disastrous bobsled race where everyone kept crashing.

Anyway, I know it's late, but W00T Austalia got gold in women's aerials!

EDIT: Everyone in Australia who's interested in the Olympics is going on about how it's our best Win-Pics ever. I can't help but have a giggle at that, I mean look at our standing!
