Definitely helpful. I also started playing Japanese games some years ago - which is also really helpful in learning things. Okay, I played TokiMemo on the Super Nintendo at a time where I had no clue about any Japanese writing. I think I still got the overall gist of the game, not about the characters, and managed to get some of the girls' confessions.

I started learning Japanese a couple of years ago. At the time i just wanted to play GK2, so I just did it with a Japanese dictionary for that, but I slowly got really into it. I've just got onto learning kanji properly now.
I like translating here and there, and I find coming up with coherent localisations here and there is helpful too.

I also find watching 実況プレイ videos on YouTube helpful too. They're just Japanese Let's Plays, but it's doubly helpful as you have the game text and the commentator.

I love 南風's playthrough of Kamaitachi no Yoru 2. She's a fast talking, and quite smart commentator. And, most importantly, her own voice sounds exactly like Takayama Minami (Detective Conan's Conan, Fullmetal Alchemist's Envy). Kamaitachi no Yoru 2 is a text heavy game though (well, it's a sound novel), so the vocabulaire might be a bit difficult for beginning learners.

I prefer watching 実況 on NicoNico by the way, because of the comments, but game footage + commentator + comments in Japanese might be a lot to follow in the beginning ^^'

I never go onto Nico Nico, unless somebody has a link to the download of one of the singer's covers. Currently I'm watching sena playing through Wind waker HD, it's a nice way to also see how HD changed... aside from the HD, which I don't care about, the lighting is better.

I love Takutaku93's channel. He plays all sorts of horror games, which is my favourite genre. My Japanese vocabulary is my weakest spot, so I don't always understand what he says, but it helps to hear the pace he speaks at, and the words he uses. Most of the games he plays are RPG horror games, so they're always pretty fun to watch.

Ditto. Since I'm not that great with spoken Japanese, it really helps me to read the comments when I have no idea what's going on. (Often times, the viewers wouldn't either, but at least I can share the feelings.)

I'm getting better at reading lyrics in Japanese, but that may be more because I remember the lyrics and not because I am "reading" the lyrics.

Oh, people with an iOS system, the free Joysound app from the Japanese store is pretty fun: you can get time-stamped lyrics through that app just like at a karaoke (the songs have to be properly tagged (in Japanese) though).

Yeah but like I said: being good at Karaoke with songs could mean that you simply know the song really well. Not that your reading is good. If you put me in front of a Karaoke machine and play, like, Eternal Snow from Fullmoon o Sagashite, I would know the lyrics cause I know the song. Even if I saw the lyrics during the subbed anime a lot.

Speaking of, that's a good way to learn some things. The anime with lots of songs in them, like Fullmoon o Sagashite, Mermaid Melody, stuff like that.

Of course it depends on the songs you choose, but there are tons of songs I definitely don't know the lyrics of by heart, but can sing perfectly as long as I have the lyrics in front of me. I admit there's an element of 'knowing the song' (the melody, where to cut off etc.), but a big part of it is really just me reading the lyrics as they fly by on the TV.

And there's of course singing along with songs friends chose which you really don't know, or again, just vaguely know. Kouga Ninpouchou as a sing-along song for example asks a lot of a person's kanji reading skills, if you've never heard the song/seen the lyrics ^^ (don't mind the romaji on top)

What I really need practice on is the spoken side of the language. It's tough to focus on Japanese when I'm still learning Chinese at the same time, though. After a while, the two start to mix, and it just sounds awkward. Having a Chinese background does help with memorizing terms, but I can never get the pronunciations right. ( `∧´)9‶ It's tiring to always have to look up something in a dictionary since I don't have any textbooks to refer to, and I can't buy one without inciting trouble at home. It's so tough learning something without proper resources.

I assume that with spoken Japanese you mean, active use of the language? Because you can go a far way with listening through the consumption of different kind of media (drama/news/music etc/実況）. Conversation is really hard to practice by yourself though. You really someone to talk with to really get used to speaking w/o having to think about every sentence / intonation / 相槌 / etc. I was fortunate enough to have been able to go to Japan for an extended time during my studies, which really helped with conversation.

Textbooks are really useful to convey grammar and basic vocabulary, but I would think that basic vocabulary shouldn't pose too much a problem for you by now? (Unless you really have to look up everything as you play the games). Grammar is a bit more difficult though, as that is definitely something better acquired in a more structural way, I think (unless you have the amazing linguistic power of children, who can mysteriously absorb grammar). The only advice is just to read a lot in Japanese. From manga to books to newspaper articles, and look up the grammar you don't know.

Aye, I mean practice through conversation. Since I don't take classes, I don't have a ready partner to converse with, so whenever I try speaking, it sounds a bit awkward, even if it shouldn't be. I don't normally have trouble with basic vocabulary or grammar, but I do struggle with some common expressions and proper usage. Of course, those issues aren't limited to my Japanese.

I believe I still have that linguistic power... granted that I'm not bothered by anything else. It's no match with what I've been capable of several years ago, though.

Conversation isn't writing of course, but if you really can't find a speaking partner, writing (mail/chat/fiction/whatever) should be a solid back-up plan. I don't know how much Japanese you write usually, but it is really helpful. Nowadays, I don't have many occassions to speak Japanese, except for the rare times when I make a phone call, but I am still writing daily, be it Twitter, or fiction, or something else. At least to keep the active Japanese... errr... active.

I like calligraphy and brushwork; I dislike writing more than a few sentences. Because English is naturally so elongated and varied, there's little helping it. However, I have a pet peeve about writing characters, especially in traditional Chinese, since the characters can be pretty bunched up. If they don't fit into a grid-like table or structure, it really bothers me. I've come a long way since my early years, but I'm pretty meticulous with that sort of thing.

Fortunately, once I took up writing kana for personal studies, the process went so smoothly, I couldn't help but celebrate... by taking several months of hiatus.

Thank God for keyboards.

You definitely don't want to see the notes I made last year of a (Japanese) Akutagawa Ryunosuke class last year ^^' It was the first time I had (hand)written that much Japanese...

Well, social media like Twitter might be good, also because there's only 140 characters there :P Or, you could always try writing that one thing of yours in Japanese :P I can tell you, that was a really interesting experience for me regarding writing in Japanese.

Maybe, but... I dunno. I barely go on facebook anymore, I'm not really that into social media and stuff.
And that is definitely being done in English. Writing in Japanese might not be a bad idea... but getting that done in English is going to be hard enough already.

Motherf***ing Kanji! I hate kanji. I could play my games so much easier if it was only Hira or Katakana. I'm writing down the clothes in a dating sim game, since I'm going to be doing a walkthrough/guide for it written in Shift-JIS - for people who are worse off in Japanese than I am.
I've gotten okay up to now but there's this one dress here that I just CAN'T figure out what the first kanji means. I know the second means color... I thought it was nijiro, since the dress is pretty colorful and I know the second is Iro. Something-Iro One Piece. I already looked up kanji for various numbers...

Can't explain it... it... the right half of the kanji looks like a blocky written S, only mirrored. Urgh, all the other clothes are just things, like, Classic Line One Piece or Flower Pattern All In One...

^ I know the feeling. You say it's a mirrored "S"... like 己, set on the right? My searches have led me to a few choices, but for a name of a dress, i think 妃 would work best. It's pronounced ひ and refers to a "princess" or a female of royalty.

Yes, that's the right side of that kanji! But the other one isn't that... it looks like... a paddle. At least, that's what its form reminds me off. It's likely that it is a kanji I've seen before, but TokiMemo's font is a bit... changed when it isn't speech bubble text, so it looks different.

I used that exact homepage when I was trying to use that to figure out the kanji. Of course, while I can replicate what it looks like, the fact that I don't know the order of how to write it makes the whole thing a bit moot...

I used that exact homepage when I was trying to use that to figure out the kanji. Of course, while I can replicate what it looks like, the fact that I don't know the order of how to write it makes the whole thing a bit moot...

If you look up each individual radical here, you can get the stroke order of each radical.

If you post up a picture of the kanji, we can probably help you identify it

But yeah, learning stroke order is important, if only so that you can look up kanji in drawing dictionaries (which are definitely the easiest way of looking them up)

Yes, that's the right side of that kanji! But the other one isn't that... it looks like... a paddle. At least, that's what its form reminds me off. It's likely that it is a kanji I've seen before, but TokiMemo's font is a bit... changed when it isn't speech bubble text, so it looks different.

By any chance, are you looking for 配? 配合 (haigou) means "combination, mixture, match". It certainly fits the context.

Wait a second, I recognize these two now. I use this phrase all the time.

It's probably 配色. At least, that's the one dress that fits your description of it that appears in this walkthrough of TokiMemo 3rd.

It really pays off to learn stroke order, but in the modern age, one can also get away with knowing approximately the stroke number; many electronic dictionaries will give you the option to choose some radicals, and a stroke number range to find kanji; very handy if you know parts of the kanji and can roughly guess how many strokes it has.

There is an electronic dictionary for the DS (the original one) that everybody used back in the time because it was 1) cheaper than buying a seperate denshi jisho and 2) it had amazing input recognition. Seriously. You just have to be approximately right (and you can be wrong too at times) and the thing still finds the one you're looking for! Especially great when the kanji is printed very small or written in a cramped writing.

And I love kanji in general. I really can't play old Famicom games where everything is written in hiragana and katakana. Nowadays, I can just finish a novel in Japanese in a day, but I bet it would take me several if it was written in just hiragana and katakana, just because I would need to think about where to cut of the words and thinking of the right word with the kana. And as someone who occasionally writes in Japanese though, I love playing around with kanji and readings.

Yes, that's the exact one! And that page is awesome! I'm totally putting that next to the homepage I found that tells me which chocolate topping and base result in what type of chocolate you make on Valentine's day! I am glad they changed the choco game to not simply stir-this-way-then-that-way, but here it's a huge amount of trial and error until you get the choco type you want.

Are you talking about Kanji Sonomama? I have it, and it's amazing! In fact, I still use/have my DSPhat exclusively for it. It was definitely better for me to buy it for $50, then an electronic Japanese dictionary with drawing kanji input recognition for $500.

Yep, that one! I still have it, though I don't use it much anymore. I also have a 'normal' electronic dictionary, but because I was on a budget (and had the DS software) anyway, I opted for one without stylus input, but with a (for me) more relevant choice of dictionaries. For those wondering, the Kenkyusha Japanese-English dictionary is definitely the best available, with a very robust selection of example sentences, which show how to use the word in question. In my experience, most of the other J-E dictionaries are less extensive (then again, it does sell at a slight premium, so maybe it's only interesting if you're into translation / more deep comprehension of the language (i.e. scholarly Japanese / active writing / etc).

Everyone around me may have had those fancy stylus-input electronic dictionaries, but the Kenkyusha J-E dictionary, 漢字源 and the normal Japanese dictionary (J-J) were enough for me.

I came across Valshe singing Ggrks/Go google it and I'm surprised I didn't find this out sooner...! The lyrics are different from the original version and I can't really come across the lyrics or even a translation. But from what I look at the lyrics, it's mostly not so much a Ggrks with someone liking the character, but more, like, confusing Valshe with Len? XD

NicoNico's comment system is awesome. It's so much better to see the relevant comment at the right time, and who doesn't love a 弾幕 once in a while? ^^

So I started in Oguri Mushitarou's 1935 novel Kokushikan Satsujin Jiken for like the fourth time.... and it's still the hardest Japanese novel I've ever encountered. It's not even the older kanji-usage that forms a hurdle (common use kanji changed drastically after WWII), because I occasionally do read novels from the Taishou period, but the way Oguri writes... you really just want to say 日本語でおＫ to him. It's been a long time since I needed a dictionary besides me to read a book... You'd think that considering I can actually follow university level courses in Japanese, I wouldn't have that much trouble with it, but... aaargh.
