Yeah we used to have a book diary thing going in high school where you wrote short reviews of any books you read and the teacher looked it over every so often. Unfortunately I ended up in an argument with my teacher over it as she flatly refused to believe I had read BRIDESHEAD REVISITED at age 14. Daft old moo.

Oh and stuff about the midwest. "Call of the wild" and "Grapes of wrath' made me want to physically harm myself.

I think that bias comes from my emphasis on Celtic Lit, but it's true really most of the interesting works (Shakespeare, Chaucer, Austin, Marlowe, Marie de France, etc.) come from europe.

I prefer Luigi Pirandello, Ibsen and Will Shakespeare to any american playwrights. everyone has a different preference when it comes to literature and and I'm no mentally deficient just because i don't agree with you.

And no, I don't like Raisin in the Sun either. I was thankful after that trainwreck we went to Twelfth Night.

That's not the issue, Jesus. It's not a race thing, it's a matter of enjoyment and meaning derived from the material. I don't find any enjoyment in any of those works and I read them only because I had to. A work that is depressing for no reason, other than to show how badly life can beat you down is not deep, and it is not, in my opinion, a pleasant or enriching experience.

I'm not rascist, I don't care if your a black, Native American, or whatever race writer, I'm part sami, but you don't hear me playing the race card. a writer should be respected for the material they produce, not because they're a minority or a woman. And there are good black writers out there, I just don't think that Loraine Hansberry is one of them.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. C'mon! Let's just chill out. Let's not have an arguement if someone is racist or not. And let's not just say basically, "Oh hey, you're racist". This topic is about books, not race. I don't think Jenna_Darknight is a racist. But, even if she was, so what? There's no need to tell everyone you think she is. I think we all just need to chill out.

So, does anyone here not like Tuck Everlasting?

That can kill a good story. did it just get bogged down in detail or was it just slow going? I'm probably never going to read it so I hope you don't mind my asking.

Ah. I think a lot of writers fall into the "too many details" pit. tolkien, who I love, falls into that far too often. It was manageable in Lord of the Rings, but it killed The Hobbit for me.

Yea. It's good to have details, but if you have way too many, it just kills the book and then you end up with a slow paced one.

Exactly, and I think too many writer's think, "Oh, the story will be more believable if I put more details in it." I think a lot of potentially good stories go down the drain because of it, but for some reason, schools seem to like to subject us to them.

Heh. No wonder I don't like a lot of school books. I read some of these books we get and I'm just reading detail. When I write stories in my free time, I always think, "How can I make this interesting to the reader?". I think some of these authors are focusing more on having the reader create an image in their head of what's going on. Sure, I want to do that to. But, I don't want to bore them to death. It's not ALWAYS so much the picture as it is capturing your reader's attention.

Right. I'm more of a Character writer myself, as I've found that characters are both more fun to work with and also allow for a reader to get into the story more effectively if they can relate and understand a character.

It seems that when the subject of bad books comes up, being forced to read them in school also comes up. We don't have to read this and aren't even recommended to in my school, but I was kind of wondering if anyone who has read it has had any problems with 1984. I think most high schools don't read it because most of them are slowly going in the same over-controlled direction taken by the countries in the book. But some colleges do have it required, I hear.

Personally, I loved it. I read it on my own because I love George Orwell. But this was, by far, the greatest thing I've read by him. It became one of my favorite books. I think everyone should read it, especially if you liked V For Vendetta. I just thought it was a little weird that some schools actually give this one good book out for the students to read. It's almost like they actually try to bore the hell out of the students. So, what do you all think about it?

I think it still holds some truths to it. I'm not a big Orwell fan, but 1984 is up there wiht A Clockwork Orange in my book as good psychological stories (I want to call them thrillers but I'm not quite sure if that's right).

I read that 6 years ago and I couldn't make sense out of it. And, yes it was slow-paced. There are way too many books that describe stuff for too long. Most books just seem to do that so they can have an excuse to charge a lot of money for the book.

I hate you so much right now.

My least favorite books are:

1. The Odyssey. I had to read TWICE and during the first time I read it, I had to do a project on each chapter! And there's like over 30! :sob:
2. The Old Man and the Sea. A story about an old man who goes out to sea to fish! Exciting! -_-
3. The Mosquito Coast. Allie Fox just annoyed the heck out of me. Not to mention that about one-third of the book was about the scenery!

I studied Canadian women's lit at (an English) University. Liked all of it, actually, but rarely see it discussed elsewhere save for Attwood.
