Well, look no further. After weeks and weeks of investigation (and getting Croik's approval after asking her if I could post this here), I have finally found a free hosting provider for those of you that don't have your own, so you can host your own collection of randomly rotating avatars, like the one I'm sporting. =D Thus, inspiration and the desire to share the wealth drove me to write a complete tutorial on even the most minimal things of getting, configuring, setting up, and using my Random Avatar Script of Doom™. =)

Beware though, as it's a bit of a lengthy read, for it covers every single aspect of the script, including, but not limited to, configuration, signing up for and setting up an account at the hosting provider, and testing each and every function of the script, among other things. =O

No, and that's exactly why I included the sign-up process at ByetHost, the place I discovered that works with my script 100%. Normal image hosting sites like Photobucket, Imageshack and others don't let you run your own scripts, and my script unfortunately doesn't use external images, so you're forced to use custom hosting. But go ahead and read the tutorial; I tried to make it as easy as possible to understand for the common Joe (given my background as a software developer) so anyone can get the script and create their own rotations. =)

Hi! I must say your script is awesome. I have a question though, if I were to use my own host, what would the requirements be, aside from being able to run php and direct link images for my avatars?

Just that; being able to run PHP code and allowing remote linking. Oh, and if you want to use the custom userbar counter, your server will have to have GDI enabled (for code-driven image generation). It doesn't need anything else besides that. =)

Ach! I'm getting an error 500. Could it be my host? I tried opening my other php pages (pretty lightweight php though) and they work fine. Maybe my apache version? And byethost isn't accepting any new registrants for freehosting. Sorry to bother you about this, but do you have any suggestions?

Btw, does this also work if I run it in localhost?

Really? Hmmm I think I tried it twice and both times it said they're temporarily not accepting new signups... oh well, i guess it's back on now. I'm glad I got to use my own host though -- at least, i get to use it for something now LOL! :keiko:

Here's something: you can move the contents of the /randomizer/ folder to the root of the subdomain you set up and delete the randomizer folder. ;-) The only thing that will change will be the links; the config files and everything else remains the same.

Been working on the new version of the script as of late, v3.0. Most of the heavy work is being done to how stuff works behind the scenes, but there have also been major changes to the user interface. Here's a sneak peek:

Major update!

Been working my ass off for you guys.

I've decided to go out with the early alpha roll-out of the rechristened Image Randomizer Script so everyone can take a look at it and say what you like and don't like, what could be improved and what could be removed. Most of the heavy work has been done behind the curtains, so you wouldn't really notice; but the administration interface has taken a MAJOR overhaul to make it easier to manage everything.
