Let's hope this works...

ACHTUUUUUUUUUUUUUNG BABY! :rock'n:

I'm calling all musicians out there! If you know how to rock then let me hear it, and together let's rock out loud!

I wanted to give back to CR somehow, and the only way I know how to do it is music--its the universal language, after all, its what keeps the world united, and its what every culture has in common.

I created this thread in the hopes that I could get the established musicians together in one spot. No, this isn't your average "Do you play an instrument" thread, this goes beyond that.
Here, you can talk about the instruments you play, your experiences, Music Theory, products and brands, suggestions--the works! And it doesn't matter what you play, you can even sing--if you know a thing or two, you're welcome!
Meet your fellow musicians, recommend products, throw some ideas their way, and let's help out each other!

If we're going to better ourselves as musicians, then we have to work as a community, ja? So let's bring it!

Here goes nothing Croik-biscuit <3

Sounds pretty cool.

Of course, I'm kind of tired right now, so I'll just post what I know and got when I'm not so tired.

This topic would be very cool if it resulted in a group project of some kind.

I'm a drummer in an aggressively chaotic free jazz duo, along with a bassist. It's more like it's an ensemble, but the two of us are the only permanent members with others else coming and going constantly. It'll evolve more eventually I guess, we're fairly serious about it. Beyond drums, when it's only the two of us playing, one us or both (usually just myself) will be on full-time multi-instrumentalist duties, which results in a bit too much of a constantly varied sound, but we're really getting a hell of a lot of practice out of this as a musical outlet. We've played at several cafes so far and stolen the hell out of the night too. We're fantastic.

I'll edit this to go more into detail about my drum kit when I'm not in a huge rush

edit: I drum on an older Pearl Export, largely unchanged from how it was originally purchased (mostly due to lack of funds, but I got it in damn near perfect condition). The cymbals have all been replaced with Zildjian equivalents and I am utilizing a DW 7002PT double bass drum pedal.

I went into larger detail originally but I accidentally closed the tab and was too frusturated to rewrite.

Well if you have an idea for a project in mind, what would it be?

As for MY experience, well:
I can play just about anything. I'm the type of guy who can just pick up and instrument and in five minutes know how it works. Doesn't mean I sound good, but I don't sound poor.
My best instruments are the piano, bass, acoustic and electric guitar, and naturally any synthesizer. I'm also not bad with percussion instruments like drums and handdrums, and I can play the harp pretty okay. The violin is a tad of a mystery, so I cheat and play psaltery, hurr :B
And I also sing--been in choirs since I was four years of age.
I also compose sheet music as a little hobby, and love to compose piano ballads and classic piano pieces. My pieces are usually filled with chaotic bliss when it comes to movements, so its always an interesting listen.
I've been producing CDs since I was 16 and have been goin it solo, but I met my two best friends Ashe and Kazu who roped me in with them (for better or worse!) I'm currently in a band called Re:MIND, we're a Visual Kei band and we have a lot of fun. Next year will be our first year touring around, I'm happy for us! It sucks because we don't have a drummer, so I have to pull QUADRUPLE duty and sing, play bass, AND lay the synth and drum track down beforehand! But nothing like multitasking chaotic mess, ja?

I know products pretty well and can make some great recommendations for those who want to have the best sound at the most affordable price. Quality isn't an expensive thing after all, so why tread it that way?

I-I hope I didn't sound like...arrogant when I wrote that. Just extending my experience is all, to establish my credibility. If its any genre, any theory, anything at all really, I'd love to help anyone who asked!

Oh, yes, I almost forgot this topic. Let's go ahead and get some things down, shall we?

INSTRUMENTS PLAYED:

- Guitar
- Bass Guitar
- Piano
- Keyboard
- Percussion

Also, I have written a few songs as well, but I haven't gotten myself to put them up anywhere. [Which I really should.]

I am currently working on getting myself a new electric guitar, as soon as I can, probably.

I have been playing mostly the guitar for over two years now, around the time when I started to become more serious in music, so it all kind of fitted together, I guess.

I've actually been thinking of writing incidental music to the Ace Attorney series. I can sing and play the piano rather proficiently, but I'd rather write music than perform it. Who knows? Maybe when and if I get a good composing program, I'll post some music here--even if it's not the incidental music I mentioned. I've already written a few things for piano, in addition to a few works for larger ensembles. So far, nothing big, but that will change in time.

I learned piano for three years but never got anywhere in terms of what grade I am. I know the basics though and I play by ear so I can play any tune.

I also played guitar for a while but had to stop since I moved. I'd give anything to start it up again. I'd teach myself but I never have the time!

I love to sing and have been in many choirs. I've wrote out a few songs but never really got anywhere with them. Singing is a great passion of mine and I'd never give it up.

That's all from me for now.

I play piano, bass and sing in a band. We're playing our first gig today. I'm a little nervous, but I guess the audience isn't going to be that big anyway. We play something like progressive rock.

I play some other instruments too, tuba and guitar and stuff, but right now piano and bass are my main instruments.

A computer program. By hooking a MIDI keyboard up to my computer and getting the program to recognize it as note input, the computer records the notes I play on a score. It's much more convenient than writing by hand or clicking wherever I want the notes to be.

Project-wise, an obvious work would be a doujin-style Ace Attorney soundtrack arrangement album that we would all work on (you know, like our own Gyakuten Meets [Genre] or something), but I shouldn't be getting ahead of myself before recording equipment is purchasd (although I do have drum mics now), set up, and I actually know how to use them (I pirated FL Studio 8 XL Professional Whatever Edition and it's a wacky mystery). Besides, as evidenced by many other project threads here and on other forums, simply talking about projects is the quickest way to show that it'll never get achieved, so I'd leave the concept of a group project as just a thought for now until it's shown that people would actually be interested and can contribute.

Anyways, pessimistic downtalkings of my own ideas aside, electronic musicians are so crazy to me. You dudes are all... playing computers and... and it's weird. I'll never understand the appeal, you wacky nerds, you. Image

Its what we do :pencil:

It does seem confusing, but well, I've been on FL since 15, so I guess I learned from years of experience. But its not as hard as you think. Its like building blocks really, the only hard thing is subdivision, and if you're good at math? Even THAT'S easy.

In fact, I was trying to do something similar with Justice For All's OST, but well, everyone has school and other obligations, and not many people were confident in their skills enough to follow through. I would love to head such a project, and wouldn't mind teaching the art~

Every time I think I figure something out in the whole piano roll/music note thing, it never works again, man it's confusing but I only really need to learn how to record with FL Studio so I guess that part doesn't matter.

Nah it's fine, plenty of people here besides myself apparently are pretty okay with a wide variety, but what's most important is to focus centrally on your one or two big instruments and not spread your skills too far, otherwise your overall tone will just be too weak.

Since you're a trombonist, I would recommend not straying into the higher sound of brass (such as trumpet or flugelhorn) so as to not screw up your embouchure. Your lips won't be able to handle it or they won't build the necessary strength to carry the trombone.

General Luigi wrote:

I assume it will be fairly varied and not stick too tightly to a genre, but we're not even sure what this project will be yet. I think?

I actually have an old trombone from the '40s that's one of my favorite antique instruments. Problem is that it requires lots of screwdrivers to put together so it's not easily transportable and it doesn't hold together well. The sound is rustic as hell though.

That is true, but I am of the position that certain instruments are best suited to specific melodies and styles. For example, a celesta would bring the opening to Pictures at an Exhibition to shame. Likewise, the English horn solo from In the Steppes of Central Asia would be ill-suited to a trombone. Though the melodies can be played by those instruments, those are not the instruments I would want to play those melodies.

To comment on the argument above between Tinker and GL, I'd say you both are right. Anything can make anything, but some things are the best at some things. I can flute it up all I want for example, but music is also about portraying a message, so if I want that message to be strong, I might consider a different wind instrument, or perhaps give it a brass or reed instrument of some kind. It not only depends on what kind of music you want, but what you want that sound to say.

Ooooooooh Double H that looks hawt! A little pricey, but also a bargain if you consider competition. I gotta hear you play with those one day!

Hm.

Just straight up piano for me. Harr. So I guess I'm not as multi-talented as some, especially when I'm a hardcore baroque/classical pianist... So in another word - I suck with anything that requires lots of rhythm, but give me technical stuff and I could bang that out. (Think Bach's Fugue - the 4 voices kind.) Unfortunately, I stopped playing for five years, and I really need to get my piano tuned so I could start playing again...

In terms of experience, I completed the ABRSM 8th grade exam ages ago and finished theory at 5th... Theory is definitely not my strong point, but since I didn't really continue to study music hardcore, it was hard for me to keep that up on the side... I was seriously considering the LRSM and FRSM (I actually played a bunch of the baroque and classical stuff on the repertoire already.) - but again, time, school, work, a lot of that took that away from practice time...
