whee my first topic
Kay, well apparently there's a strange virus spreading around the US and especially Mexico... and since my dad just came back from Mexico, I'm a little paranoid <_< >_> They've been taking a lot of precautions already and most of the people who've died are the ones who live in, I suspect, rural parts of Mexico, so it doesn't seem to be very extreme. Most people who got it were only sick for a while and apparently some available vaccines might be able to cure it (if I read it correctly), though they still have no clue how it's spreading... I mean, "swine" should mean eating pork or being around pigs or something, but lots of people who've gotten sick haven't been near them. Go figure.
...
Blah, I'm not too concerned... *goes to wash hands again* I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM!

I'm no expert, but H1N1... Isn't that the same protein combination as the Spanish Flu that killed all those people after World War I? I certainly hope this doesn't turn out to be as serious as that, considering that I'm not in an area that's particularly well-defended against the spread of disease.

This is absurdly severe -- while we were pathetically fixaing on one strand of the avian flu, we didn't notice that the swine flu in Mexico re-evolved into the spanish flu. It started in pigs, but got some ultra-deadly avian flu DNA along with the human flu DNA that makes it spread human-to-human, not just pig-to-pig or possibly pig-to-human like it normally does. The Spanish flu was the worst recorded pandemic in all Human history, so regardless of where you are, be worried. Oddly enough, people with low white counts have a large advanage: while most flus kill through mild pneumonia that gets co-infected, this flu primarily kills through a prossess known as cytokine storms. These are the deadliest type of non-allergic immune over-reactions there are, being about as bad as anaphylaxis. And they can't be cured by almost any means. That is why mainly young people die of it: T-cells which facilitate the cytokine storms are in highest quantity when people reach adulthood (the definition being when your body generally stops growing and, as a result, your thymus shuts off at 18~20). So yes, be very worried. There is no guarentee that this will become as big as the spanish flu, but it is capable of being as big. That enough is cause for concern.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, but I'm a student who read up on the flu when I heard about it.

Oh, and to correct a mistake in the first post, vaccines don't cure anything, they prevent infections. There is no available vaccine for this, though 2 of the 4 common flu medicines work on it, particularly the one that the most common flu is resistant to.

From what I've heard it's been around the Federal District Of Mexico (Mexico City) and surronding states like San Luis Potosi. I'm more surprised that since this is Mexico we're talking about it hasn't spread to more states, although in the coming weeks it will do so.

Yeah, it was. There's tons and tons of variants if every type of flu though.

People in the USA who have had it recovered/are recovering fine; for some reason it seems that people outside of Mexico are getting a milder version of the disease.

So if you just don't cough into your mouth, avoid touching your eyes/nose/mouth, wash your hands regularly and keep overall good hygeine, and you'll be fine.

And don't panic and overreact. People flooded a hospital near St. Francis, saying they had the swine flu, but none of them had it. (Although if you get sick your prolly should call your doctor, just to be safe ^^')

Ah, Swine Flu. What's even more beautiful about this is that my dad is going to Mexico on a business trip this week. We're trying to tell him not to go, but....he just won't budge. I don't think he's gonna be too near Mexico City, though. But he seems to have good luck. He went to China on a business trip when SARS was at it's height, and we thought he might have gotten something when he came back...but it wasn't anything too serious and he usually gets sick when he comes back from China, anyway.

I remember, before even hearing anything about anything in regards to the Swine Flu, thinking about 1918. Didn't that virus jump from humans to pigs, and that's when the virus was first isolated? was my first thought. It doesn't help that I've read this book, either.

H1N1 killed over 100 million people worldwide in 1908.

But don't worry. It'll just be like SARS or Bird flu. They never caught on as people thought they would. Bad fads.

Urg, I thought I wouldn't have to deal with it, since I live in Florida. x.x It seems to be spreading rather quickly, though. I honestly don't know what to believe anymore.

This.

Medicine just keeps on getting better and better. Swine Flu really hasn't spread out that much (except maybe in Mexico?) and a bunch of different people are already doing a bunch of different things; medicine has come a long way since the Spanish Flu almost a century ago. (Also, don't forget that part of the reason the Spanish Flu spread so much was b/c of WWI.)

Swine Flu

heh...I thought about it as well. Also, I had been thinking about it beforehand, wondering where that cartoon came from. Thanks for leading me to find it was shown with KND.

Okay, seriously, this is creepy. Hopefully it won't be a giant epidemic.

But I get worried really easily. My family hasn't gone to Mexico and I haven't touched anyone I don't know, so I should be fine.

I bet smallpox makes a return in a couple of years. After the success of Swine Flu and Take That, it must be tempted.

Spoiler: The boring sciency bit no one really wants to read
Currently there are few treatments for the flu, and it's symptoms in general are the same as any other flu. Most people would recover normally. The worry does arise when the strain mutates to a form that is immune to the treatment.

Just hearing about this now on the news,
They've got anti-viral drugs ready though.
. So far only 2 people in the UK have it...
And in Mexico they closed all schools for a week..
They've upgraded it's threat level from 3 to 4.
But no one has died of it outside Mexico.
that's all I've heard on the news atm.

Well, you have to worry about any bacterium mutating into one that is immune to immune, so it's not really something to think about >_>

Once it starts killing, then I worry if it's immune or not. But I'm not worried, because I've lived through Hand Foot and Mouth disease. Pig flu is nothing on that.

The Disease seems a heck of a lot weaker over in the US and Europe. Perhaps it's the climate or something. Or we just have more stocks of tamiflu than them.

You guys worry too much. Besides, people with lower immune systems have little to worry about, this disease targets mostly healthy, strong young adults.

In the article it says that they believe that as they start to look for swine flu more, they'll find more mild cases in Mexico and more severe cases in the rest of the world. So you never know how that point will work out.... The rest of the world could be more hygenic than Mexico xD But since the flu season is winter, you'd think with climate it would be worse in US and Europe (and it's a good thing we're getting to summer xD)... And even if it is, we do have a lot of stockpoiles of Tamiflu and stuff.

Also, you ppl don't worry too much about getting it now. All those students are from the same high school, so they're in pretty close proximity. And out of all the original 20 ppl, all of them but one had had some exposure in Mexico. And that one who didn't was the wife of a guy who had traveled to Mexico. Since the virus hasn't adapted to human-to-human transfer that much, chances are you won't get it if you remain conscientious and have good hygeine.

The disease has only been spreading around for one week!
ONE WEEK!
I am not trying to be fearmongering, but honestly, judging whether this will be the end of the world or a new common cold is beyond absurd. There is good reason to be worried, as spreading effectively human-to-human is a giant step beyond avian flu. At this point the virus could evolve to be more adapted to human-to-human transfer, and, given the laws of evolution, that is not only possible but guarenteed to be quickly selected in if it evolves. It should be a priority of every government on Earth to research the virus so that it doesn't become pandemic. But counting death tolls in your hometown and drawing universal conclusions is not how pandemic research is done! (I hope...)
