So I found this article on the RSS feed for Nintendo.com Latest News about a debate on how to properly pronounce "stylus" in plural.

Source:

How do YOU pronounce it, Styli or Styluses?

I pronounce it “Styli”

I actually say Styluses but I don't think I've ever needed to say it often.

There's a way of telling what the correct plural of stylus or any word ending in -us is :F It depends if it's a greek or Latin based word. Stylus is a latin based word, so it is Styli, but octopus is based on a greek word so it is Octopuses.

But I've never had to use the plural of Stylus :F

@Gerkuman: I thought it was Octopi...

Either way, it really doesn't matter all that much to me. Styli or styluses, I don't care which one you use.

In the rare occasion I'd ever say it, I'd say styluses. Styli makes my head hurtz.

... I never thought about it before... Styluses feels more natural to me, but I can see why people would use styli.

Going by logic, I'd go with styli, but knowing the way I speak, I'd probably say styluses since it rolls off the tongue easier. Never had an occasion though where I've had to say the plural form of stylus.

I'd just say styluses. Some people think their vocabulary's so much better because they say 'fora' instead of 'forums'. Wow, does it really matter? Do you think that guy down the road is going to know what styli or fora are?

(And no, I don't want any conflict. XD So don't reply to my posts.)

When I buy replacement styli for my DS, That's where I use the plural because replacements come in groups of two or three.

Off-topic, I buy Pelican brand metallic body styli. The silver one goes well with my Titanium colored DS (If it didn't have a skin).

I always said "Styluses" because it sounds more natural to me. I really don't see much of a difference between the way you can say it but I guess some people are picky that way.

This topic really makes me wonder if English has gotta be the most controversal language known to man. I'm always seeing something being debated about the English grammar somewhere or another. Then again, I've heard that English is the toughest language to learn. Butz

Nope, it's not octopi :) Look at wikipedia, it says Octopuses. The wiki page for Styluses say Styli. Trust me, I read up on it, the correct form for stylus is Styli. It's whether it's greek or latin based that decided what the plural end of -us words is. I'll edit this post with more examples ^_^

EDIT: Oh dear :F It turns out there is no hard and fast rule to classify words. It depends on complex grammar rules, declamation etc. But there is no doubt that the words, Stylus is Styli and Octopus is Octopuses. (The oxford english dictionary says that Hippopotomuses and Hippopotomi are valid, but everything else says it's just Hippopotomuses)

That's a great idea. Refer to them as a singular object. Simple.

I think saying stylus all the time sounds weird. I mean, "I've got two stylus more than you."

I just say "styluses". Depends. I alternate between called it a "stylus" and a "stick".

But styli sounds so much sexier.

Styli.

Stylish.

My stylish styli.
