That's brutal. I don't think I could wield my Nodachi effectively to defend my home, but my husband does refer to it as the home defense sword because of it's size.

According to this the burgular "lunged" at the students.

Could have a case for self defense.

For some reason, I first read this topic as "Student sliced burger in half with samurai sword." Then I read the title again. Then I read the article. There's a rather large difference between the two...

Anyway, god damn, that's insane. I second everyone who's said something along the lines of "don't fuck with gamers." There very well could be a case for self-defense, I'm very interested in reading a follow-up...

From the article, it doesn't seem like the kid sliced him "in half", but I suspect he bled to death.

Well yeah, but what makes a catchier title: "Burglar Bleeds to Death" or "Burglar Sliced in Half"?

I also can't help but laugh at this sentence: "He wasn't a ninja," Guglielmi said.

Anyway, I definitely wouldn't want to be the guy if it was self-defense. "Hopkins student kills man with samurai sword"... with a headline like that, most people'll think he's just some sort of psycho killer.

I think it's a bit of an epic judgement moment.

Justice dealt out in ultimate proportions.

I feel kinda sorry for the burglar though....break into a house expect a baseball bat, maybe a kitchen knife in the off case maybe some kinda self defence spray. This poor soul gets a samurai sword. I wonder why he'd lunge if he saw how epically armed the student was.

If you read the whole article you'd know that the burglar was a serial offender and had been in and out of the system for most of his life. If you're going to break into someone's home and rob them for a living, it's an occupational hazard that you might lose your life in the process.

Not really where I come from, we're not allowed to stock such...weaponry as guns and samurai swords (though from the look of our blade-crime neds beg to differ).

Burglary must be a whole different ball game for America.

Our past-time is opening our doors and waiting for burglars to come in so we can lop their heads off.

In America burglary isn't a crime, it's a donation.

I wasn't saying he deserved it or that we're better off without him. I was just pointing out that living a life of crime involves certain risks. Especially in places where a home owner has a right to harm or kill intruders. There was a case here about a year or two ago where a neighbor killed two men that attempted to rob a house. I believe he's in jail now because that man did not have the right protect the other man's home in the fashion. However, had the neighbor given said man permission, he'd be out as a free man. Sick world we live in.

Sorry, it's in my nature to make sure I was being clear. I work with 15 year olds whole like to misinterpret instructions on purpose to get out of doing work.

This case reminds me of another samurai sword case from a few years ago. No one died in that one, but the wielder of the sword went to jail because in that state it was illegal to own such a weapon. He thought his neighbor was comitting rape, but it turned out he was just watch porn.

Don't misunderstand, or make posts that simply slander me with nothing else.

I'm sure America is fine and dandy just saying that since you are allowed to stock weapons to defend your homes burglary is significantly more dangerous.

Though didn't this crime happen in Canada anyway? :yuusaku:

In other news Ceres is totally right, it's not fair to slander the dead like that, even the unjust like this poor burglar. I'm sure there's at least some burglar's out there who have no choice in whether they steal or not, maybe they are morally justified to in order to feed a family if you want to go for the fairytale image.

But he was a man before he was a burglar and the death of any man (or woman) is something that should be treated with utmost reverence ya?

Holy fuck.

Well, um... I don't know how the hell to say it...

This kid used a samurai sword for protection against bulglars?
There are two possible endings for this:
1.- Nobody will ever rob from the kid's house again.
2.- Somebody will catch this kid without his sword and shoot the hell out of him, then rob his house.

The bottom line is the kid's out of his mind. I mean, it's Ok, he wanted to defend his house. But he killed the bulglar with a single strike...

Two actually, but anyway. Not that self defense is unlawful, it can get extreme in some cases such as this. Being inolved in a similar one (No casualties, just scared the bugger with an airsoft gun) I can understand how scary it can get, but I've got this funny feeling that the sword isn't the first thing he would have thought of grabbing, it's obviously sharp enough to kill, but then again, under pressure we can get crazy.

Well it was his after all.
Now if it was you that'd be the first thing you'd think of. You wouldn't mess with grabbing a butcher knife from the kitchen if you knew you had something more intimidating right there. And by the time you call the police and they show up he'd be gone. It could've been a baseball bat or a 12 gauge and the outcome would've been the same.

Wouldn't suprise me if video games start getting bashed again because of this :yuusaku:
