If you read the whole article you'd know that the burglar was a serial offender and had been in and out of the system for most of his life. If you're going to break into someone's home and rob them for a living, it's an occupational hazard that you might lose your life in the process.

I'm sure there's at least some burglar's out there who have no choice in whether they steal or not, maybe they are morally justified to in order to feed a family if you want to go for the fairytale image.

Two actually, but anyway. Not that self defense is unlawful, it can get extreme in some cases such as this. Being inolved in a similar one (No casualties, just scared the bugger with an airsoft gun) I can understand how scary it can get, but I've got this funny feeling that the sword isn't the first thing he would have thought of grabbing, it's obviously sharp enough to kill, but then again, under pressure we can get crazy.
