So, what do you guys think about it?

Personally, I'm inclined towards XP, but that's been supplanted by later models, such as Vista, which has a significantly higher learning curve. Now Vista's on the brink of becoming obsolete too, by this new format, called Windows 7.

This is the wikipedia article on it.

essentially, it's just a better version of vista with a new name. sure, vista originally ran like shit, but the one running on most people's computers right now is a decent OS, if a bit resource-hungry.

I see no issues or learning curve for Vista or 7. I checked out the latter at a Q&A session over a VOIP connection at the local Fry's Electronics, and I'm running the former as of now.

I ran XP between 2002 and 2007, when the PC running it died. Then, I bought my current PC and I'm running Vista. The transition was rather seamless, at least for me. Even Grandma doesn't seem to have trouble. Given, I disabled User Account Control, so it's no longer dicking around with me.

Anywho, Windows 7, which is released about this time next month, looks pretty good and has much more useful features. Consider it like XP was to 2000 and ME. It's like Vista, but even shinier and works better. At least, from what I've seen, it works better. The interface was actually even easier to learn than XP's, being more hover-friendly and having easier-to-access features. For example, window stacking. Even as recent as Vista Service Pack 2, you still have to control-left-click to access your cascade and stack options. In 7, you've got to simply drag the windows and they drop in stack. Much easier process. Tried it, myself.

7 looks to be faster and slimmer than Vista, and I plan on buying it with a new computer, since overuse is kicking this one's bucket.

Besides, in the last 2 years, processing technology has jumped radically. And prices have dropped. A good combination, if you ask me.

I'm using a Vista right now. :edgeworth:

It always disconnect every once in a while and I have to painstakingly reestablish its connection. :zenitora:

Having used Vista as a system admin and power user for the past three years, I believe my opinion is educated enough to state objectively that Vista is a piece of shit.

Windows 7 is basically Vista with all the shit gone wrong corrected in spades. There's some stuff here and there that could use some polishing (especially when gearing the OS to more uneducated users, such as elderly people and computer novices), but overall I feel it's a move in the right direction for Microsoft.

That's...kind of scary, really

Having used Vista as Administrator (Like the dedicated Superuser, Administrator) since I got this PC, I can objectively say I've had more trouble in all the years I ran XP, both normal and Admin.

Everyone hails XP as the pinnacle of Microsoft Operating Systems, and it was. Until early 2008, when Vista had been pretty much completely repaired. (Bug testing takes time, mmkay?) There are a few software issues with certain programs designed for XP having slight issues, yeah, but that's what you get with a non-NT software kernel. As for 7, it has a simple XP emulator, so only gamers can bitch, if at all. (The Emulator sucks resources down quickly)

I'm looking forward to 7. It's definitely better than Vista. But Vista wasn't that bad. In fact, I'd say in its time, it's outshone XP.

Even with SP1 and the massive amount of fixes it has, I still think Vista is a chore. I don't particularly care for breadcrumb navigation, and the fact that Vista does NOT give a visual cue that it's capable of doing the old direct path navigation is a huge turnoff for me. Also, for power users like me, the WinKey+R combo is needed to live, and the fact that ALL tasks run from this prompt run at Administrator level is a risk I'm NOT glad for. (It's why I do my general chores in my lappy in a limited user account, and run all installations and programming chores through an admin account when I need to.) While the wireless network stack in Vista has MUCH better signal reception, the manager itself is considerably crappier than that of XP and KDE. Even Gnome has a better manager.

My list of cripes could go on and on and on and on, but I prefer to save you guys the hassle.

Honestly, I had the exact same problem with XP...plus tons of other problems (it ran horribly slowly, for one).

I honestly rather like Vista. Sorry, guys. :/

Prolly not gonna get Windows 7 because I'm cheap, and besides, I only got this compy (and, by extension, Vista) about 5 months ago. :/

(As a note, Vista is on Service Pack 2 as of a few days ago.)

Strange, Shiki, I've been power user the whole time and never WinR'd. EVER. I've had to use the run prompt on occasion to open taskmgr.exe when my desktop failed because I was using WAY too much resource for an Internet Explorer window (Ever had 126 tabs open?). But, even then, I navigated to the prompt, having completely forgotten WinR.

Further, I daresay Vista has a better way of finding files for you than XP. I can recall several cases where I had to manually go through a million and 12 folders to find a particular file in XP, but used the search function in the start bar to find my desired file within seconds in Vista. Plus, Vista does have the same navigation as XP, anyway. If it works, don't fuck with it. Microsoft has a grasp of this.

I will say I much prefer image folder formatting on Vista. It just creates so much less hassle than that stupid image preview thing XP had. I always had to set my folders for Document navigation...

And, on that note, Documents & Settings doesn't exist in Vista, at least from what I've used. (When I used Vista Professional, I forgot to check, so..) I'm running Vista Home Premium and my dad's got Vista Ultimate.

And with this, I end this post:

Stay the fuck away from Vista Ultimate. It has more issues than Vista64. And, yes, it is only a 32-bit OS. I shudder at the thought of Vista Ultimate64.

Oh no, a thread about a new version of an OPERATING SYSTEM got technical!

EVERYONE FLEE

...Wait, you call this topic "technical"? ...Hah! Pathetic.

To reiterate: if you're going to bring up the topic of an operating system, expect it to get technical, especially when you're talking about a new OS where almost all the changes are on the backend and not the eye-candy.

Sheesh.

Windows 7 looks very interesting from what I've seen of it, and I'm holding off purchasing new equipment for its official retail release, in fact. It looks to be about as promising as an OS should be in 2010.

The inclusion of the WinXP Virtual Machine was a very smart move IMO. A new system with Win7 on it will most likely outperform an equivalent early WinXP system 100-500 times over anyway so it would only be very recent software that was noticeably affected by virtualisation. When you consider that this recent software would also have a Vista-native version and Win7 has been built to be directly compatible with all software designed for Vista, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

At least it avoids the issue you had with XP where most Win95/98 software broke on it. Speaking of which, would the VM system support running Win95 or Win98 on it, or are they just far too old now? I'm thinking yes. XD
