Yes. Why do people have a hard time tolerating stupidity and ignorance? Oh wait. Obama can't, that's why he wants American schools to change. He must be a troll.

As far as times go, my days were usually from 7:30/8 to 3:30. We only got out at 3 in high school, but we started early too.

As for recess, it depends on the district. At schools I've observed, they've taken out recess completely for more "educational time". Compared to schools that have, say, 30 minute recesses, the ones without are actually doing poorer state standard wise, at least from what I've seen in the school districts in my area. And yet more learning time will increase our grades, right?

Well you need a balance.

My school reduced the lengths of individual lessons from 1 hour to 50 minutes as those last 10 minutes where generally when kids get most bored and distracted, however it increased the number of lessons from 5 to 6. This seemed to work ok, same length day, shorter lessons but more of them.
As for breaks we had about 20 minutes mid morning and 40 minutes at lunch. The day would start at 8:30 and finish 3:30.

The balance has to be struck between hours working and suitable breaks in order for the pupils to stay concentrated without becoming restless. I think an increase in school hours is a horrendous idea, a restructure of the current school day would work better to regain this balance.
That much work in a day just aint good for a kid.

I stand by my opinion though that too long a summer break is detrimental, and I think this is the one Obama needs to push through. Any longer than about 6 weeks and you begin to lose what you've learned. 6 weeks is more than enough to re-energise oneself.

I do however appreciate that you have these hugely popular and greatly attended Summer Camps which in the UK we do not, so there isn't a great deal to do here. At least in the USA kids have the opportunity to use a decent chunk of their holiday to attend these and do something creative, talented and constructive.

All about the balance Obama.

Yeah you people are so much better than Rotan's supposed bad standard that you continue on this pointless argument even though half of you are off topic. So your just as bad as Rotan supposely.

Now I'll go on topic. Reading the comments about taking away summer break time and transfering that into longer breaks during Christmas and March Break would actually be a nice idea. Most students do get bored at the end of summer vacation and additional off school time seperated longer into parts would actually reduce stress to the needed extent by giving them a longer cool off period before they go back into classes.

*Trying to get this back on topic*

I understand that compleatly. During a winter and spring break, a week or two can just go by quite quickly. A longer holiday break in exchange for a shorter summer seems like an understandable exchange to the logic of a student.

my high school starts at 8:00am and ends at 3:00pm. we get seven minutes passing period between classes, lunch is 40 minutes. the districts around ours have a similar schedule, it seems fine to me.

Its funny when a lot of the newer members bitch and complain that people are being trolls or making spam topics, when all the older users like myself find it to be the funniest thing ever and we HAVE FUN WITH IT.

Anyways, people have to be blind not to see why Rotan isn't liked very much. And what I find very ironic is how he tries to act cool or whatever but as Ceres stated he makes "Bawww PM's" To them when someone disagrees or makes fun of him. Not really proving to be a tough, cool, collected guy there buddy.

Yeah mine used to be around that time too (just a little shorter). I'm going to make a guess (which will probably be wrong, I admit so don't flame me or anything), that most are somewhere between 7-8ish hours.

That in my opinion is long enough and similar to ours here. So, who's gonna tell old Barry O'Barmy where he gets off on this one.

We propose to restructure the school day rather than increase its length, take a shorter Summer break in order that two weeks break occur during Winter and Spring and possibly a week halfway between each and yet again take a public policy from Britain, a la the NHS, and attempt to implement it into a reluctant-to-reform nation.

I think it'll go swimmingly, but it's the best way of doing it.

I don't get Americans sometimes, and bear with me here. I'm not being facetious.
I don't understand how a nation can have a culture whereby every single service is rewarded with generous tips for apparently no reason yet is unwilling to pay a little extra to the top dogs in order to actually improve the service, rather than line the pockets of the lowest tier.

The fact is, socialist capitalism may be an oxymoron, but it is the only feasible way forward. Everyone must pay a little to fund improvements to the infrastructure and public services that will at some point benefit them.

The NHS as an example is in no way perfect, but you really notice when it's not there. Dentists have withdrawn from the NHS here and it really hits the pocket hard.

This response is actually a lot nicer than I expected :3
Btw, pretty interesting "educated discussion" you've been having for the past two pages.

Anyway, just a point I'd like to bring up, but restructing the schedule of each school in the way you're talking about (if I understand what you're saying, that is...*) would be a bit difficult. After all, every school has a different schedule, meaning each school would have to rearrange its schedule individually. I realize each school would have to handle its own schedule anyway if extra time is added to the school day, but it would be much easier since they can just tack on extra periods (and some more free time to fill in any gaps). So while restructing the schedule might be nice, it's a lot easier and more realistic to add school hours or school days.

*: Change around classes and periods so there is a fair amount of lunch/free time, and classes aren't too long. (And shorten summer vacation.)

That's another thing to worry about is traffic. If schools are getting out when Obama says they may, traffic in cities are already bad enough as people are getting home from jobs. Put school traffic into the mix and I'm sure it'll run as slow as a hurricane evacuation situation.

But...im from Hawaii and actually know people who were in high school with Obama. It may be interesting to note that he was a C-student and a pot smoker. Definitely not the sort of person you'd believe would be president one day.

I guess the president couldn't possibly want the United States to be on the same level educationally as all the developed and developing nations that have better test scores and educational systems. No, he must have some petty reason to want to improve the country.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if all recent Presidents made those kinds of grades in high school. The same thing was said about George W. Bush (his college grades too).
