That's a pity. There are definitely problems with the educational system, but I doubt adding more time will make things much better, if at all. I imagine truancy rates will skyrocket and the extra funding for keeping the schools up and running the extra time will probably be taken out of more important things like the already low salaries of teachers and the already underfunded materials like textbooks. I think Obama's great, but I really hope he reconsiders this particular plan; I can't see it working without money being poured into educational systems nationwide. |

the system needs to be almost redone from the ground up. the problem is funding such a thing. most states have problems trying to fund what we are doing now (wich is why the education level varies from state to state) Michigan still hasn't figured out the budget for the 2010 fiscal year and it was sapose to be turned in last thursday. first thing on the chopping block education like every year

my work is 7 hrs and 6 mins ya it's fun actualy instructor time is more like 6hrs after lunch break and passing time |

It's days like these I'm glad I don't go to public school, but still I don't want this to happen because most (if not all) people would be miserable if they had to go to school 10-11 hours a day |

Since Ultimate Prosecutor obviously thinks my opinions have no merit, let's cite a comparison of why 11 hours a day is unnecessary. I recently went to China for a visit. While I was there, my parents enrolled me for a week in one of the inner-country schools that run from 7:00 AM sharp to 11:50 AM. From there you are allowed a 2 hour lunch break, and are expected to make it back at 2:00. Three more hours of classes is followed by a one hour dinner break (at school), and then proceeds to class from 6:00 to 9:20. Let's do a little math now... That's 11 hours of school. If you add the dinner break and the lunch break, it's 14. Not appealing, now is it? Now, back to America. School hours here are 8:30-3:30. Seven hours. Guess what? My cousin goes the aforementioned Chinese school. I go to the school in America. I'm not stupider than he is, and I certainly don't know less. From here? We can conclude that number of hours for school will NOT significantly affect intelligence. It's how the curriculum is presented that counts. So obviously, the government didn't do comprehensive research (according to the titular article), Ultimate Prosecutor. They know the hours other kids in other nations spend, but they doesn't know exactly how they are spent. So instead of trying to procure government control of public schools, Obama should be leaving it to the education department, while should be focusing on appointing competent people for those positions. Those are my two cents. |

I am so glad I got out of compulsory school when I did (2008), and with college you can make your own schedule which is great  (I currently only go to school for 2 hours on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 1 hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Let's see....my school starts at 7:40 and ends at 2:32... Although I usually get there at 7:15 and leave at 3:00...... So my school is 6 hours and 52 minutes long while I'm actually there for 7 hours and 45 minutes......

Lol, fail. I usually get home at 3, but school ends at 2:25, and starts at 8:21. 6 hours and 4 minutes. |

Ok, the average seems to be around 6-7 hours. In Britain we are in from 8:30-3:30, so like 8 hours. And without the long summer break that's quite a lot more time. Sure, 3 extra hours is horrendous, but 1 or 2? Just to get it around 8. I think that's about right for a school day. And yea, odd times would send my OCD crazy. |

In addition, a lot of childreen are living in social weeker occurrences which makes hard to get a higher basic knowledge... And here we link a connection now, look it's easy. Dumb parents which are totally overstrained with their childreen + fastidious childreen(I hope you all know what the aftermaths are...)+ low social-living-standarts + dumb making tv programms/internetz(sry but in my opinion you should not enter the internet until you are at least!!!!! 12... and then only with a blacklist running..) + dumb education system = dumb childreen = failing at school = dumb country. Same here in germany,too. *waves* Instead flaming Mr. Obama which IS!!!!! (And the world really celebrated Bushs resign!) without a doubt smart you should be thankfuel that at least he try to change something at the education systems... (I mean do you remember the epic fail rule that in some american states (correct me if I'm wrong) the physical education was canceled for more maths and english because the childreen were so dumb? Be thankfull it's not such kind of a rule!) I didn't called ALL the aspects why america / germany is in this situation about education system and I don't know every single aspect but there are so many basic things which must be changed.. and it would take years!!! decades! centurys!!! or maybe a millenium to change it if the things are going on like this ... and such fast blindfold (from the experts which advised obama to consider about such a new order) rules like this one, wont change anything... But I agree that the vacations should be shortened to at least 6 weeks.. The 4 other weeks can be used somewhere else, where there are reasonable! but as mentioned earlier.
