OK, before I state my opinion, I would like to go on the record as saying this: my opinions are not politically based. I don't generally like to talk about my political orientation on public internet forums (I don't like debating/confrontation, especially on the internet.) I'm looking at this issue through a purely psychological perspective and nothing more. That being said:

Against what is probably popular opinion (amongst school-aged kids anyway,) I'm in favor of cutting summer vacation short. I don't really think shaving a week or two off of summer vacation is going to kill anybody. In fact, I think it will be more beneficial in the long run; students tend to forget a lot of what they learned during summer break. Perhaps with a shorter summer break, students will be better able to retain information they learned throughout the school year. Their memories will be sharper, basically, which means higher success rates in the classroom. And if students are able to remember more of what they previously learned, academic stress rates could possibly decrease. So I think the idea of shorter summer vacations is a good one.

Longer school days however; now that's a completely different story. I'm pretty sure the average school day is about 7 hours, as people here have already said. IMHO, it doesn't need to be any longer. School, especially high school, is an extremely stressful setting. And I'm not just talking about the academics; social factors play a huge role in the high school experience as well. What if a kid is constantly being picked on by his peers? Extending the school day will just subject the kid to more ridicule, which can deeply affect his self-esteem and mental health. And when you add high academic expectations on top of social stress, then you've really got a problem. Depression and other mental health issues start to kick in, which is, needless to say, extremely detrimental. And as some of you have already said, the increased stress levels could possibly raise drop-out rates, which is also detrimental. Basically, extending the school day by a few hours can cause more harm than good.

TL;DR: I'm in favor of shorter summer vacations, but I'm strongly against lengthening the average school day.

Thank you for giving us an opposing view.

Seriously.

I still don't want summer break to get shorter because even a week can make a big difference when it comes to summer vacation... :edgeworth:

True, but we get a lot of days off anyway.

And plus one or two weeks of summer vacation are worth it if it will affect your education, which in turn afffects your carrer, which in turn affects your enjoyment out of life.

Jingoism is aggressive flaunting of nationalism.
Or...just trying to promote your own country's pride with too much enthusiasm. Sorry for not posting.

Of course, the topic at hand is about the school extensions, and personally, I'm expressing rather strong disapproval of this concept...

Now that I've thought about it, I honestly don't think taking a week or two away from summer vacation would hurt anyone too bad. Most of the time at that point in the vacation the students want to go back anyway (or at least express total boredom and then regret thinking that once school starts again). They could offset the cost by extending Spring break and maybe Winter break. I'm not sure if a fall break would be feasible since Thanksgiving is usually most of the week off already (in our district we get the full week off).

I think it's brilliant. It's well known that all Americans are stupid, this can only be a good thing, right?

Seriously though, 11 hour school days is not the answer, however your current set-up of 10 weeks summer holiday is way too much. We have 6 in England, that is enough.

5/10 for Obama on this one.

For the last time, nowhere in either article is it stated that Omaba is promoting 11-hour school days or a 3hour extension mandate. Stop jumping the gun here and actually read the articles. Don’t tell me you actually believe all the political scare tactics and mudslinging the hard right throws out there. Let me give you a piece of advice: hardliners and extremists on both ends of a political spectrum are mostly full of bullshit; take what they say with a grain of salt.

Anyway, as I stated before, I’m in favor of any education reform, if they decide longer hours and shorter vacations would be effective then by all means try it. Keeping the status quo will get us nowhere.

In all honesty, I hate the fact that the government gets to decide what's best for our schools. They've spent their whole lives in politics, what do they know? What they need are some teachers over things like this. It's better to have judgements coming from someone who knows what's going on rather than from people who have nothing to do with the situation at all.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

@Looby
Completely uncalled for. For me, it's easier just to write Jingoism than it is to replace it with the definition. "Imperialistic" is easier to write than it's definition, and so on.

Anyways, there's no way Obama's going to improve the intelligence of Americans by simply adding hours to the school day. He would instead compel more students to...well...drop out. For those who are already apathetic towards their education because they know full well how to exploit government handouts and common taxpayers, the lure is right there, with a perfect excuse.

What we really need to do is to teach kids not to take the luxury of being in a rich country for granted. No one gets to choose what country they're born in. So instead, by teaching them appreciation, they can learn some respect. If you plant the notion in their heads that by not doing well, they'll be relegated to an abject life, you can bet your left arm they'll start trying in school.

Oh right, times change, people change, so the conservatives are really fighting a losing battle. (Even though Obama's not a conservative, he's nudging us in the direction of firmly inscribed education systems.)\

Furthermore, such an extension of school would worsen the economic situation, because teachers who work extra hours are going to expect to be paid more, causing burdens on the taxpayer, and of course, with the massive medicaid/medicare fiasco going on right now...If Obama must institute this prospect, then he can at least wait until the recession has subsided.

Right, if you're wondering, I'm currently enrolled as a Junior in an American high school. My opinion is not baseless.

Jealous eh? :franny:
After graduation they won't get a vacation like that again until they retire. So i think the're entitled to it. They could always have an option for kids to do extra school work during summer break if they want to. Just to keep their brain on track.
But all 11 hour days and / or shortening summer break would do is wear kids out (don't forget about having to go home and do homework after the 11 hours). Which would counter whatever was gained from it.

In Soviet America, Obama elects you!

So... All in favor of secession, raise your hands. I get the feeling this is how the Civil War started, but with high school kids taking the place of plantation owners.

I'm somehow doubtful such a proposition would not pass well as a bill and would likely never reach the oval office. However, in the case it does happen, I'm going Columbine. In that last 3 hours. Just to show them it's a bad idea... :igarashi:

And to you, Ultimate Prosecutor, let me point out some facts, at least about school in Texas. I can't speak for other states, here.

188 days of school (37 Weeks)
85 days of summer break (6 weeks)
40 hours school a week (8 hours a day)

It's not as long as you say it is.

Oh wow. Yahoo News. Classy.

I'm not sure why everyone's getting so worked up about. I can understand "ahh! I'm going to be at school during dinner" or whatever hysterics but I can agree on some aspects. Especially with the shortening of summer break. I'm still a student, fourteen and in Grade 10, though I live in Canada, and the first few months after school reopens is unbearable. I swear, it seems like everyone but me forgot everything we learn last year, and I think it's impossible but these guys are still getting worked up over what a noun is. I'd like to see the summer break shortened and the breaks distributed evenly over the course of the year. I'll take an estimate of 15 weeks out of school per year in America, there could be five 3-week long vacations every 7-8 weeks instead of the current, sporadic (in my opinion at least) system. People would still be able to go abroad and on their return they would still remember what they had learned before the break-- without having to do any "summer homework." That way, there would not be a loss of break time but instead it would just be spread out. c: You could even take out on of those 3-week vacations.

As for longer school day hours, I, personally, wouldn't mind at least. In my school pretty much everyone still stays after school for several hours-- or however long their teacher would let them-- to finish working on a project. It wouldn't make much of a difference anyways. I understand that this would leave little time for extra-curricular activities and sports and hobbies, and so I'm not neccesarilly all for 11-hour days, but I'm viewing this from, apparently, a different perspective than others.

People seem to be forgetting that instead of making each class being, let's say, 2 hours instead of one and a half-- or one hour instead of 30 minutes, they could instead keep the current class times and give the opportunity for more blocks/periods in the day. Instead of having 4 blocks per day, there could be, fore example, 5-- or instead of 8 there could be 10. Schools would hire more teachers (which helps unemployment problems--unless that's only in Canada) and the classes would be smaller--which, as I'm pretty sure is common knowledge, really benefits the experience for both the teachers and the students. Besides, I'd be excited about taking a few courses more over the year, I can never always take the courses I want.

Of course, I'm not viewing this from a business standpoint or a tax payers stand point and probably not from a political standpoint. These are just my two cents...

I wish I saw this topic earlier instead of being completely late, haha. And I only have a 6 and a half hour school day. 8:30 to 3:00 I miss elementary when it started at 9:45 ;_;

i agree though, we should take some weeks out of summer, our spring break here in california is only one week. a month of winter break would be cool too. maybe a full week of thanksgiving too, our district only gives three days.

@ Cold52 I've been to 4 schools thus far, if you don't count minischools and if you don't count preschools. If so, I've gone to 6. But I can't remember how long they were open for. All I know is that all of them started relatively late.

Oh and at Johnny Rotan's earlier post. No, I'm not jealous of your school system. Canada beats the US in almost all educational statistics-- and we have less funding on our educational system than the US does. : / (/Jerky Proud Canadian Moment)

And I think we get more days off than you do. Yay Pro-D Days!

Ugh, nvm. Completely misread a few posts. T_T

Just to make it somehow slightly on-topic:
Although I've never seen or experienced that forget-everything-over-summer-break stuff (or at don't remember experiencing it) ...Maybe I just got into the smart classes :D

Too bad because i've got em'.
And i could care less if someone doesn't like them.

You should worry more about actually understanding what you're saying than just blurting them out without thought or care.

The problem isn't that I disagree with you, although I certainly do because you're a raging idiot. The problem is how you just don't give a shit about the process of actually thinking things through, because that's too much for you. Becuase you are a raging idiot.

My fave thing about Rotan at the moment is him saying kids need long breaks from school, even though it obviously never did him any good.
