Isn't it too early in his presidency to win that? A year longer down the line when we see and experience the long term effects of his presidency, then sure. But now? Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

I heard about this on the way to work today. I'm not sure how I really feel about it yet, but it does seem odd to me too.

AGREED.

He hasn't even really done anything hugely monumental yet so that must be the only explanation...

Hm? That's a Hamlet reference? ...He still could've changed it to Norway and retained the reference, then :nick:

This is more about international stuff than American stuff. Basically, Obama's like, "Let's do all this stuff" and the Nobel prize committee was like, "Neat" and gave him the prize even though he hasn't done anything yet. (Beside state his intention to do stuff.)

People need to understand Obama isn't even 1/7th done with his FIRST term. No president has gotten anything done in 6 months.

According to the Nobel Prize site, Obama recieved the Prize:

NobelPeacePrize.org wrote:
for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

So, basically, for what he said he would do and the hope he created in people.

----

Just in case he doesn't do any of those things he said he would do: Can the Nobel Committee ask for the Prize to be returned to them? I mean, ask for it to be nullified?
So it would be like:

Nobel Comm: Hey, you said you'd do all this. Want a Nobel Peace Prize?
Obama: Woah shit thanks.
N.C: Just so you know, if you don't do all this, we'll take it back, K?
O: Ok, I guess.
N.C: Cool. Here, have your dirty Prize.
(Years later)
N.C: Hey, you didn't do all this.
O: Come on guys, give me a couple more years.
N.C: No. Hand it in.
O: Aww, shit.
----

Damn, I'm sleepy. Try to ignore the second half of this post.

Or it could just be a publicity stunt to, I dunno, increase awareness of the Nobel Peace Commitee or something? One things for sure, it's not for legit reasons.

Right. The Nobel Prize Committee really needs to publicize the Nobel Prize, since nobody knows about it.

True, but that's exactly why he doesn't need that nobel prize NOW.

I'd be happy for him if he got one after he actually did something meaningful... :yuusaku:

I just heard a segment of his acceptance speech on the radio. From his tone of voice, he's as surprised he's getting this award as the rest of us. He even admitted that the award is sometimes given in anticipation of what is to be done. (Eg, I know I haven't done anything yet. Why am I being put on the spot like this?) I was still surprised that he decided to accept the award. But then again, who declines a Nobel Peace Prize? Although, with the slipshod way it was handed out, I now hold it in significantly less regard.

From Nobel's will on the subject of awarding his 5 prizes (Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Physiology, Literature, and Peace):

Quote:
...and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

Note the exact wording here. I can see why they picked Obama, and I think in the long run he has the potential to have been a good choice. Most of the criticism has been that it's so early in Obama's term, so they're awarding it in anticipation of things he is planning or likely to do, rather than what he's actually done. Overly optimistic perhaps.

The Nobel Peace Prize is nothing more than a political award that gives moral credibility to its recipient. It shouldn't reward actual contributions, because international politics have nothing to do with science: there is no predictable link between the decisions made by leaders and their consequences in the long run ; what seems like a good move now can provoke a disaster in fifty years.

Nobel Peace Prize was won by Chamberlain, Arafat and Gore as well. I mean, really, it's like the prize they've got leftover and just chuck at random people.

It's all part of the Obama fever and a poor excuse for inviting Obama to dinner in Oslo. The papers are full of articles like that these days, "Prime Minister Were Surprised When Obama Called" and "Oh my God, I actually spoke to Obama" and so on :p

Seriously though, I think it's pretty foolish giving the prize to the "top man" in two ongoing wars... But at the same time, I see the point. Words are powerful too, and isn't perhaps the idea of a world heading in a better direction worth a prize? Maybe maybe. But overall, I think I think it's a mistake.

Like my mom said when I told her: It IS too early for that, but hey, for whom else could they give it? It's not like there's a lot of choices around. This is not a era of great pacifiers like, say, Mandela.
