Just thought it could make for some interesting discussion. You can state whether you believe in them or not whichever way you want-- full-out paragraphs or a simple sentence that says "It's bullshit". Whichever you prefer. So post away.

I agree with the first post. Although i like reading some of the stories and ( for some) the myths around them. I really would like to know where people get the ideas from.
I love myths and legends but i like them as story's i don't belive in the real thing. My sister does. She loves reading about UFO sightings or Bigfoot/yeti / lochness. She even went to scotland with a trip about it. She's a nerd.

It's rooted mostly in culture, folklore, and essentially the human curiosity. Subconsciously, people always try to look for something "mysterious" or "unexplainable", possibly as a scapegoat for the supposed tediousness of normal living. Cryptids satisfy this human need for a "paranormal" or "supernatural" scapegoat; take for instance the case of the "Chupacabra"-- when people's livestock were suddenly dying in mass numbers, they thought up of a fantasy creature to blame their problems on instead of blaming themselves for not taking care of their animals properly.

Actually, this thread's not about Greek mythology. It's about "cryptids" or creatures that most likely do not exist, yet people believe in them for some reason-- most likely to basically satisfy human curiosity as well as the need for a paranormal or supernatural "escape" so to speak, from their normal lives.

There has been some sightings and it is said that it might be because the Lochness monster is a type of Dinosaur... ( i think... forgot all the facts) But if it is a type of dinosaur then... it's not cryptozoology xD

I think the Loch Ness Monster is actually a horse thing called the Kelpie. I heard how those horses can transform into sea serpents and like to drown people in the ocean.

As for the UFO's, I believe in aliens, but I don't believe that it would be possible for them to make it to us without them leaving a single trace. Plus, I saw something on the history channel the other day about UFO's being military experiments though I only saw a bit of it. A co-worker of mine told me the same thing when I told him that my brother said he saw a UFO on his way home. Seeing as how there's an airbase nearby, it's actually probable. Despite all of this, I do enjoy the mystery behind the UFO (alien or military).
With fabled creatures, I believe in them to a certain extent. From what I know, absolutely anything is possible; After all, we make new discoveries all the time. However, I'm sure that all of the stories about these creatures were embellished in some way shape or form. For example, dragons, they're obviously reptilian-like and there were very bizarre dinosaurs, but I highly doubt that they blew out fire, were large enough for humans to ride, and if they were, they probably weren't able to tame them (it would be like taming a t-rex). As for mermaids, they're also possible, but they most likely look more like a fish than a human and aren't as gorgeous as how they are depicted since they probably live closer to the bottom of the ocean (seeing as how they haven't been discovered).

The "Kraken" was recently confirmed to be real. UFOs? Yeah I believe in those. There was a lockdown at my school recently because of an alien abduction, which is the most prominent rumor.
I once saw on the History Channel that 'god' is actually a bunch of aliens who guided humans toward civilization. Makes for an interesting theory and explains a lot...

^ No, Paranormal Activity wasn't based on a true story. The director had a few "paranormal experiences" apparently and so made a movie based on those, but that's as far as it goes.

However unless we develop teleportation, we're never gonna see them, and vice versa.
Here's why.
We would know of any nearby already from radio waves etc. We haven't received any of these, and I assume they haven't received our radio boradcasts either (any aliens seeing Barney the Dinosaur would invade immediately!)
We must then assume that the aliens are over 100 lightyears away.
To put it plainly, even at light speed, it would take 100 years to get there.
Our Galaxy is 100,000 lightyears across, it would take 100,000 years at lightspeed to travel across it.
Ya see? It all takes too long to get anywhere. This is why there are no such things as Alien sightings and ET UFOs. Because they wouldn't get here in a reasonable time. 100,000 years is an awful long time. We were still pre-neanderthal. By the time we got anywhere in space at that speed, we'd either be long extinct or very different.
So unless you get all SciFi about it with wormhole control, warping and teleportation, it aint gonna happen.
Even Lightspeed is impossible for anything with mass.
E=MC²
Energy = Mass x Speed of Light²
the speed of light is a constant, so
Energy is directly proportional to Mass,
The faster you go (energy) the more massive you become.
And because Force = Mass x Acceleration, an infinitely increasing mass would require an infinitely increasing force in order to keep accelerating at a constant rate.
Um, it's simpler than it sounds. We can't even go lightspeed. We will never know if aliens exist for sure.

The universe is a big place. That's the largest thing in the universe.
OK, seriously now. Yeah, it's plausible that there are other sentient creatures in the universe other than us. It's the fact that humans are so big-headed and proud of being "the smartest creatures in the solar system", that most of us think the existence of aliens is rubbish and limited to science fiction or children's cartoons. But Ultimate Prosecutor is right-- even if there are such things as aliens, there's just no way for humans to make contact with them. Hell, I doubt they'd even give a damn about the Milky Way, let alone Earth.
... But I wouldn't mind it if a ship carrying an alien watch crashed near my house and the watch attaches itself to my arm. XP
