Don't worry, I'm not trying to hack you.

I recently bought a new PC with Windows 7 and I'm trying to figure out what I really need to keep it safe.
I use the internet a lot and had the occasional trojan attack or detected virus on my old PC - but that was overly costly protection.

So, what do you use and have you ever had any problems with it?
Otherwise, have you any recommendations for software like this?

Please take a look. I'd appreciate any comments too!

Hmm, I use AVG Anti-Virus Free. As the title mentions, it's free.

I dunno, this worked better than my previous anti-viruses.

Give that a try, hope it helps you. If it doesn't, looks like you gotta find some more out there.

I use Norton. However, I also have Malwarebytes on my compy, because I once got a virus (actually, I got the virus on TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS) that somehow isn't detectable on Norton.

We (my dad and I, we share the pc... unfortunatelly for me) used Kaspersky, then when we had some problems to upload it we installed Avira Free Antivirus, that worked very well, when some friends and my father adviced him... a panda. I don't like Panda Antivirus that much (and then, my father don't want to pay it, so he uninstall and re-install every three months, for the trial version... that sucks, I know).

Once I installed Malwarebytes and it worked wonderfully, but dad said "Oh no, don't install two anti-viruses because they eat eachother!" and, even if I knew that it wasn't true (my dad is n00b), I had to unistall Malwarebytes...

Fo' sho'. AVG works excellently, at the least it's much better than Norton. So far, it's notified me of two threats and averted, quarantined, and eradicated them something Norton never seemed to manage.

Our internet service provider (Comcast) gives us anitvirus software for free. We used to have McAfee, but they canceled their contract with them and switched to Norton, which is what we have now (Has heard bad things about it but my mom insists on having it).

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Just saved my computer from that damn fake "Windows Security Center 2010" virus for the second time yesterday. Of course, I had to make ANOTHER new user account because the other was unusable, but at least I didn't lose anything.

I also have the Symantec Anti-Virus thing. I dunno much about it, but it seems to be working pretty well except against the aforementioned virus.

But yeah, my computer is old and filled with all sorts of crap, so we get a lot of viruses. Maybe we should get AVG since everyone here seems to like it a lot, but at this point I think we just need to toss this thing and get a new computer completely. And yes 50% of the reason for that is because Sims 2 doesn't work on this piece of crap anymore but who cares we still need a new one

I'm in the same boat. I use Norton 360 merely because it came with the computer and when the subscription ran out, the bloody program wouldn't stop harassing me until I renewed it.

It seems to do an alright job, not complaints.

We bought a new computer a year and half ago (or it was a year ago? Can't remember XD) and we're going to buy a laptop, because usually my father uses the PC while I have to "work" on it, and I use it when my father needs to "work" (actually, I go here and other sites and he goes to check latest NBA results and play some puzzles XD). And there, I will install the fabulous Malwarebytes. If he agrees XD

A condom.

Actually, a paid for version of AVG Internet Security. Why? It has more features than AVG Free.

I also use Avira Anti-Virus on on netbook, and that has a rather good virus database as well.

I know, we had to do that too. And the first time it didn't pick anything up when we just scanned the local disk, so I was afraid that it had somehow infected the D:/ disk. With all of our backup files on it. Luckily that wasn't the case, we just needed to update it. It ruined all my shortcuts though, so now I'm on my third user account. Hooray!

Spoiler: tl;dr
Long ago, my brother told me "THE COMUTER HAS A VIRUS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!"
(I was using Panda)
and there was a window on the screen

"Your computer has *High number, I don't remember* Viruses!
You need a emergency scan, would you like to scan now?"
I clicked and then there were a lot of "viruses"
Then another window appeared
"You need to download "Free antivirus*" (*or something like that) to securely remove all the threats"
I downloaded, and then "Your system is now secure"
Then Every 5 seconds there was this message
"Thread detected, but Free AntiVirus Removed it"
It was really annoying, then i wanted to unistall, but i couldn't, there was no way to remove that "antivirus"
So, I googled, and found out that the antivirus was a virus, and it was almost impossible to remove.
But someone said "Download SUPERAntispyware"
SUPERAntispyware sounds like another fake antivirus, but it was really effective. It removed that virus.

So yeah i use SUPERAntispyware, and Avast! Free Antivirus.
I'll download AVG and Malwarebytes.

I got another advice to uninstall Panda (it's going to p**s me off with the "Panda AntiVirus is not actived" thread. I don't want to pay a program I don't like at all!) if it don't recognize a simple virus like that... sometimes it appears while I'm surfing on devianART, but I abort the "analyze" immediately.

Let me rephrase that--otherwise SEEMINGLY innocuous pages. I'm not talking about fake logins or anything--I mean streaming videos, music, stuff like that--stuff you don't even have to download, but a virus makes its way onto your computer anyway, if that makes any sense.

Sorry, it doesn't actually. Since when you're on the internet, you're always downloading content.

But, anyway, unless you're looking for some streamed pirated movie, generally you're safe.
