Starting in around half a day, one of the greatest international sports event, at least in my opinion. And for the first time ever, in an African country.

Are you excited for it? If you are, who do you think will win? Who should win? Favourite players from all over the world?
Discuss all things related to this wonderful event.

Hmmmmm
I am in Germany and I live in the same with a huge Germany fan, yet we both agreed that German has no chance of winning since the German team has so much ill players. However I look forward how they will play there.
Favorite players? That would be Tim Wiese, the second goald guard from Germany since he plays in the same sport club in the town I live-Werder Bremen

I'm not really into sports or anything, so I don't care who wins. Ireland's not in the World Cup, so it's not even like I can support them. Once France loses I'll be happy. =]

Ah, the world cup...will England react the '66 glory? Probably not. I'm not much into sports but I will be rooting for england out there! If not, then Spain.

I think it's very exciting it will be in south africa. An odd location, but I think it will work out fine.

Glad someone finally made a thread for this XD

I like the World Cup. I'm not really into football, I try to watch all the Man U games but that's it.

I remember World Cup 2006. I was at a big conference with work and after it was over, they put a HUGE screen up so we could all watch it. I had..... a few drinks, and when England lost to Portugal, I ACTUALLY cried XD I'm a total fag.

ENGLAND SHOULD TOTALLY WIN

Hope they at least beat the US anyway :yogi:

I'm gonna put Cammy in an England kit I think |D

Oh and poor Mandella, his great-granddaughter getting killed the night before it starts ;__;

You know, nobody's telling you to post here, so just don't. If you want to raise your post count, referr to spam threads. Thanks.

France can't beat Uruguay. According to the narrators, Uruguay has only won one match during World Cups in the last 40 years, and it was against Korea. So you France haters can be happy.
Argentina plays tomorrow, we're so hyped over here! Of course, our group's the easiest one (Nigeria, South Korea and Greece), but whatever, go Argentina!

I really don't see why people say Spain's going to win. I mean, even we have greater chances (Messi-Tevez-Higuain, anyone?), but nobody ever counted us as candidates. Besides, the best football player ever is our coach.

Yeah well, I hope that Germany will win. However, like, everyone is ill or injured, so I don't think they will do it but they will win anyway.
I actually think that the Netherlands and England have good chances. France can be happy if they survive the group phase.

Doesn't stop him from being a retarded coach.
Seriously "yah we'll be fine without Zanetti and Cambiasso durrr"
Probably why you're not favourites. Plus I don't see Messi getting support up-front from anyone as talented as Xavi or Iniesta, hence the lack of an impact he's had on international football.

Zanetti was the only real mistake.
And all players currently training say that Maradona's doing a great job, and that they trust his abilities. We'll see.

And Messi? Lack of impact? Barcelona won every tournament they could last year, with Messi as the top goaler. He's at the top of his career, and I don't think he's coming down for a long while.

I'm just kinda rooting for the US.
Partially because, well, I'm Californian, and partially because I think it'd be interesting to see the US win.

But besides that, I'm also rooting for a couple other nations for no particular reasons.

Um... I don't really get it, but all the guys I know seem to be really into it. Which really confuses me. Why does it seem like people are more enthusiastic about this event than the Olympics. Am I committing treason by saying that there are only so many ways to kick a ball? And soccer/football doesn't even give me the satisfaction of watching man on man crotch/bum-grabbing (like Australian Rules Football or Rugby - those shorts are SO SHORT!). Still I guess it's kinda exciting watching other people getting excited? Someone explain it to me please LOL;;;

My country's first game is against Germany. I hope they draw because the 2006 world cup was not kind to us, and if we lose in the first round it'd be just PITIFUL. Even I can feel the pain.

As for who will win, I hope it's an African country. It would be good for the people. <3
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn?
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts

Well, I reckon they'll get to the second round before getting beaten on penalties. I'm not much of an England fan cos I lean towards thinking they are all overpaid tossers, but I tend to get caught up in it all.

Most probably, yeah. However, USA has been on a roll recently. They got to the finals of the 2009 Confederations Cup (which is something like the "Pre-World Cup" Cup), losing only to Brazil (3-2). So this could be interesting.

We'll see in half an hour!

EDIT: 3 minutes into the match, and England's already 1-0, with a goal from Gerrard.

Cambiasso was a bigger mistake than Zanetti IMO, no one's exactly going to badmouth Maradona (doesn't he have, like, god-like status in Argentina?), and note how I said in international football.

That said Messi was really promising in today's match. Shame I can't say the same about any of the England players...

I dunno, Zanetti is more of an all around player, and this one would have been his last World Cup, so I think he should have been called. Another veteran who's retiring after this Cup is Verón, who was kinda promising, and today sucked big time. AND rumors have it that Zanetti and Verón don't have a good relationship, so calling both of them would have been a bad idea; so Maradona (who, BTW, DOES indeed have god-like status here around die-hard fans) had to choose one of them. I don't know why he chose Verón over Zanetti, it was a huge mistake IMO.

But that being said about Maradona, a lot of people badmouth him here, believe me.

And you're right about Messi's influence in international football, now that I know what you mean. During the qualification round, Messi was unexistant. Today is the day he started shining (he had 4 or 5 amazing shots which were only stopped by the equally amazing Nigerian goalkeeper). Seriously, he was incredible.

To be honest, we were very lucky today. Argentina could have tied, or heck, even lost: our defense was awful, and our midfield was also very bad.
If those two sections improve for the next matches, I don't know how far we can get.

Seconded
However the major problem of the english team was that they never have outstanding Goal Keepers
I mean his rate is like 2 goals a game or something like that
However Germany soon has its first game
I bet they'll suck

South Korea has been the most positive turnout so far for me. The usual heavyweights have failed to impress me so far. I think the France - Uruguay game was the most boring one so far, both teams created barely any chances! I expected England to do better and at least scrap a win over the US, but with a keeper like Green that will be impossible. Germany plays tonight I expect nothing less than a win from them. The Netherlands play against Denmark I thought, they looked really good in their friendlies up to the WC, they've fair shot at the cup. Spain and Brazil are my favourites to get it. Furthermore I support Japan.

Well, Australia's not that good of a team, but they're not that bad, either. Well, congrats anyways, you Germans! I still hate you for kicking us out in 2006, mind you.

Tomorrow: Italy - Paraguay. Should be interesting enough.

Looking forward to tomorrow's match

I thought he was always a trustable goalkeeper, however if I hear his name always one match comes to my attention: a certain free kick from Ronaldinho against England, how he misjudged the ball there.

Germany played fairly well against the Aussies, but I have to say their defense was really weak today. Quite sad in fact, because they were praised for their ''old solid'' defense. Australia lacks pace in general, their backs couldn't keep up with the German wingers, thus resulting in a lot of free space behind their backs. Anyhow, have to give the Germans credits for their performance. They did well.
