Myself I use Facebook, can be found there with my real name (Lauramaija Rantala. Fellow CR users are free to +friend.) I think I mostly use it out of habit, it's not really my only way of keeping in contact with my friends but I do find it quite fun these days. The first time I tried FB I didn't like it at all, but nowadays it's not so much about filling out a quizz and having to spam it to 150 friends to be able to see the results. u_u
I do post about personal things too, but mostly I just rant about stuff like movies and Ace Attorney.

Because people can't hang out and talk to each other outside the net all the time. Sometimes it's easier to chat with friends online and... I would say more but I'm to tired to recall what else I was about to say.

I can understand talking to a friend online from time to time, but I don't understand why so many people feel the need to constantly be on their phone, texting or tweeting or whatever the newest popular way of communicating is.

I've yet to think of a scenario where someone could cause me any serious trouble with my name alone. And the people who have my address... the worst thing they can do is drop by, I suppose. :D
As a memento from the time I was the main organizer of one internet community's meetings, at least one disturbed stalker has my phone number. He went nuts after getting banned, and he's been on and on about "REVENGE >>DD" for the last... uh... 6 years. Every now and then he calls me and threatens to kill me. I used to report him to the police, nowadays I just lol.

It's simple really. People can't physically be with the person they want to talk to/be with 24/7.
-Constantly be on their phone
This is self explanatory. For the same reason I mentioned also.
-Texting
Another way of communicating. Some people would rather text than use a phone.
-tweeting
Twitter is used for little updates.
I really like facebook.
People can use social networking sites like facebook to talk to old friends, build on relationships, talk to others, catch up with others(this is good with the "old friends" bit), talk to people they normally wouldn't have a good chance talking to, and simply meet new people as well.
People who know each other online (like from forums) can use social networking sites, as well as other forms communication such as instant messaging, to talk with one another. Some people simply also have an easier time online.
Others have eaten gotten jobs through facebook and some people go for the games.
If we do not uphold the law...who will?

I think social networking sites undermine the term 'friend'. Rather than have a bazillion utterly random people and acquaintances as friends I'd rather just keep those important to me. Besides those sites make it too easy for people you don't want to contact you reach you.
