This story just caught my eye:

The AOL Instant Messenger group took the deepest cut so far. A former AOL employee said the group was “eviscerated and now only consists of support staff.” This person, who asked not to be named because they were not allowed to speak publicly about the company, added that “nearly all of the West Coast tech team has been killed.”

That doesn’t sound like a business with a future. Only “support staff” means no development/security/improvements…future.

I'll be following this story as it develops... but I'm not too thrilled about this. Most of my buddies are on AIM.

It's about time, AOL should have died back with netscape.
This is a good start.

I'd be more pleased if Yahoo! Messenger died.

That aside, it seems inevitable that independent instant messaging programs are getting purged, now that social networking sites generally include, and are upgrading, their chat options. Not sure if it's a good or a bad thing, what with the "multi-tasking technology" fad nowadays. Ah well.

Dang. I still consistently use AIM, so this is going to suck.

I personally use MSN, but AIM had a special place in my heart when I was growing up. :/

Good riddance.

This does not surprise me. Have you seen the new AIM interface? It's horrific.

I think more people would use AIM if it stopped changing its interface every month.

Looks more like a social networking site now rather than an instant messaging application.

Maybe on Macs. It looks nothing like that on Windows.

Are you accusing me of having a Mac? I assure you, everyone computer and laptop in my house is a PC.

The latest version of AIM for Windows looks like that. You may not have the newest version.

In his defense, that 'is' a Mac screenshot.

I wouldn't know myself since I haven't used the official AIM client since the early-mid 00's

There's nothing wrong with having a Mac, but yeah, if you wanted people to think it looked like that on Windows you should have posted a Windows screenshot.

I posted the Mac image because it's the first image I found that looked like the new AIM in Windows. Thus, I didn't pay attention to the OS it was running on. There is no variation other than the OSX buttons.

You just said, "It looks nothing like that on Windows"

Here you go, since Googling "new aim" is too hard.

And the official site to preempt claims of image manipulation: http://www.aim.com/download#windows

Nice try, though. Let's do this again sometime, 'kay?

What are you talking about I don't even?? I understood that's what it looked like after your last post. I even did as you post-emptively suggested and Googled it. Your hostility is unwarranted and unnecessary.

You should've preemptively Googled it before you said "That's not what it looks like on Windows".

No hostility here :)

Considering my AIM updated itself about a week before your post, I figured I had the latest version. I guess it's simply the latest update of the version I possess, rather than the latest version of AIM. I don't really know why I have to explain myself to you.

Anyway, considering AIM seems to still be updating their software, they don't appear to be shutting down any time soon.

I have Windows, and my AIM looks nothing like that either. It also updated recently in the last two weeks. It's an easy mistake to make.

You're the one who felt the need to explain it. I didn't ask you to :)

He said, "it looks nothing like that on Windows." I'm just saying he should've Googled it himself before saying I was wrong and there would be no confusion. :)

Ah, AIM. I have some fond memories of that one =D

It's been 6 years since I last used it, though. I blame Facebook and Twitter, personally.
