It isn't at all surprising that the people thought this heralded the end of the world and it did, just not the way they were expecting. The social order was turned upside down due to the devestating effects of the Black Death and Feudalism itself died an ugly death.
Unfortunately, the Jews were blamed for the contagion and scores of them were murdered; it doesn't appear that their Christian persecutors noticed that they were also dying from the plague as well. Idiots.
The generation who lived through it called it la moria grandissima or "The Great Mortality."

1897 - First Drunk Driving Arrest
George Smith a London Taxi driver was charged at Marlborough Street Police Court on the 10th of September 1897 with being drunk in charge of an electric cab in Bond Street at 12.45 the same morning. He was found guilty and fined 20 shillings. Drunken driving had been made an offense under the Licensing act of 1872, which imposed penalties for being drunk in charge on any highway or other public place of any carriage, horse, cattle or steam engine.

The most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau (also called Krakatoa), a small, uninhabited volcanic island located west of Sumatra in Indonesia, on this day in 1883. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw five cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people.
Of the estimated 36,000 deaths resulting from the eruption, at least 31,000 were caused by the tsunamis created when much of the island fell into the water. The greatest of these waves measured 120 feet high, and washed over nearby islands, stripping away vegetation and carrying people out to sea. Another 4,500 people were scorched to death from the pyroclastic flows that rolled over the sea, stretching as far as 40 miles, according to some sources.

Steven Biko, leader of South Africa's "Black Consciousness Movement," dies of severe head trauma on the stone floor of a prison cell in Pretoria. Six days earlier, he had suffered a major blow to his skull during a police interrogation in Port Elizabeth.
Instead of receiving medical attention, he was chained spread-eagled to a window grill for 24 hours.
On September 11, he was dumped, naked and shackled, on the floor of a police vehicle and driven 740 miles to Pretoria Central Prison. He died the next day. In announcing his death, South African authorities claimed Biko died after refusing food and water for a week in a hunger strike.
