And it hurts! ![]() My orthodontist (sp?) said that this would continue on for a couple more days until my body adjusts properly to stop the pain. Also, I won't be able to take them off until 18 months from now... When I tried to eat spaghetti earlier, a lot of it got stuck on the braces! It took me 40 minutes to eat one plate of spaghetti! Anybody here has/had braces? What were your experiences with them? (Well, on the plus side, I did get to skip half of school today, so I guess that's fine. )

I had braces a year and a half ago or so...I have a retainer, but I'm close to getting it off. I had the braces for about two years... Spaghetti is one of my favorite foods, and I totally agree with you...it gets stuck so much xD They do really hurt a lot at first, but once you get used to them it's really no problem. They get tightened from time to time, then you have about a day of slight discomfort, then you get used to it again. It's mainly just the adjusting, otherwise you pretty much forget you have them on, heh. |

Well, did you get them because you didn't bother to take care of your teeth, or is it because of a medical problem that was beyond your control? Either way, it's best not to complain and start getting used to them as soon as you can. |

18 months really isn't that long to have braces on. I think I had mine for about 3 years. And yeah, it's going to be painful, but before you know it you'll be getting them off. And you'll be so glad you got them. I know I was! |

I think it was something beyond my control. I mean, both of my bottom canines were twisted about 90 degrees! ![]() I just hope that I'll get used to them soon. It's really irritating me! ![]() Also, the braces I have is a different type of braces than my sister used to have. I've forgotten what the name of it was, but it is supposed to cut down your time with braces by 1/3, or so my orthodontist says. |

I've had them, the pain gets better :D I don't specifically remember any food getting stuck, but I was told I couldn't have chewing gum. Fine by me, I hate the stuff! I thought it was ok having them, I have a phobia of dentists, but even I was good with the orthodontist

I (still) have them actually after awhile you won't remember that they are there... Until you get somthing chewy stuck in them. I've had mine since 7th grade and I'm in 10th now so I've had quite a few things happen to them and to be honest I kinda like having braces it grew on. But I'll still await the day I can chew my favorite types of gum. |

18 months...? How lucky you are... *sigh* I've had so many problems with my teeth, ever since 4th grade. I got braces in, what, 6th/7th grade? And I'm a freshman now, blargh. D: *ahem* But yeah, braces suck the first few days of having them, but I assure you, the pain will go away after that, and after a while, you'll get used to them. [If you have to go and get them tightened, though, it will hurt a little after that. But only for an hour or so.] But they'll probably be on and off by the time 18 months comes for you, so don't worry about it. :D YES, STUFF GETS STUCK IN THEM. And it is a pain in the ass. XD But, it won't be that big a deal once you get a feel for your braces. Yep. :3 So, yeah. They're not that bad, once you get used to them. I swear. :D |

I got my braces just two weeks ago. First my teeth hurt like hell, then the next day it was my gums. Rice gets stuck in my teeth all the time and I still can't even bite down on food in front. I still have an expander on too so that's really bad. Anyways, it's not hurting now. I may get to used to it soon until they re-tighten it again. |

Right now, I ate some cake... (It's my dad's birthday!) One of the most painful experiences of my life. How the heck am I going to get through breakfast tomorrow? No wait, better question. How the heck am I going to sleep tonight while my mouth feels like it's being stung constantly by a bee!? ;__; |

How the heck am I going to sleep tonight while my mouth feels like it's being stung constantly by a bee!? ;__; Awwww. *pats on back* Sounds like it's really going bad for you...of course, it always does in the beginning. If nothing else, take some aspirin or something to dull the pain. You could ask your orthodontist if they know of anything that could stop the pain for a while, at least so you can eat, or while you sleep. If anyone you know has braces, you could ask them if they did anything to stop the pain. *shrug* I think I kinda just dealt with it until the pain stopped. XD I got some stuff done to my braces a while ago, and it hurt like HELL. I took some aspirin, and it worked okay. You just have to remember to take some more after a few hours. Hope that helped a little! :D |

Just make sure to keep them clean. You don't want to end up having nearly a dozen different cavities left behind when they take them off... |

Don't worry, it'll be worth it. Better than a life of demented teeth anyways. If you have to, just as a final resort, you can ask for medicine to numb your mouth so it won't hurt. |

Ugh. I remember when I had braces... Worst two years of my life. Except for skipping school to get them put on, readjusted, etc. And I haven't seen any food that didn't get stuck in braces. Even spaghetti. Which I admit is my favorite food too. That stuff is magnetically attracted to braces, it seems. Hopefully you don't have glasses to go with them... +Black psyche lock.+ The pain should go away...but don't do what I did. Popcorn + Braces = OW. Seriously. |

I had them for 3 years! 18 months will go by before you know it. Do you have the waxy stuff that stops them cutting your cheek? I know they're horrible I had a massive freakout. If the rings are causing a problem they can file them down, I had mine filed. And I ate chewing gum and stuff all the time, just toffee is never good for braces ^^;; Have you got pretty colours? =D |

I had braces for two and a half years, because my teeth were standing all weird. It isn't that bad, only at the start, and you get to skip school. If you don't care that they're there, no-one else will, either. |

I used to have them. If it weren't for that liquid calcium enamel-restoration toothpaste, the pain would have been too much at some points. That stuff really worked. |

Hm, I got my braces off last year. They hurt a lot at first but the pain fades soon. Regardless, I still ate gum and gummies and my orthodontist said that I was one of the best patients he had because I took such good care of them... O_0. Don't take that as hint to go do that because I just lucky when it came to that. |

I have a pallet expander. ...It's not that bad. I had spacers and everything put in. From what I've gathered, my teeth looked like small, deformed, dying pieces of corn. Now they look more like small, deformed, dying pieces of white corn. Soon they'll look like small, dying pieces of white corn! ...I can't eat corn, by the way. |

I've had my braces off for a good while now. But believe me, I do not plan to wear them ever again. Once is enough. The part I hated the most about it was getting food caught in between the braces. The second most thing I hated were the wires stabbing me in the mouth or blisters from them rubbing in. The retainers are a godsend compared to them. At least that's how I feel. |

If you're in pain, try eating those liquid breakfasts if you've just got your braces. It helps a lot, since you don't have to chew. (Note: It may make you feel like an astronaut. Or a toddler.) |

Braces suck. My braces (and the over-bite correcting retainer I had installed before them) were so crappy: the cement would degrade between checkups and half the ruddy thing would fall out of my mouth if I ate the wrong things. "Wrong things" had a vast definition, too. One of my molar brackets came undone after I bit into a Now and Later (...ok, that one was my fault ), but another fell off while I was eating a piece of cheese pizza. O_oAnd now I have these horrible marks on my front teeth from where the cement was stuck onto them. I'm not sure how I even got them; I kept my braces pretty clean (I hated having food stuck in them), and the blotchces are right where the cement actually attached, so I don't think it was caused by trapped food. They're not as noticeable now (I had my teeth whitened in an attempt to get rid of them, another painful action I will never take again), but they're still there. Oh, and the retainer. The retainer I had to wear for 3+ years after my second set of braces was removed (apparantly my braces came in shifts), and when I finally outgrew it my orthodontist turned around and told me I'd need a new one, and that they'd have to keep making new ones, so I could wear it for the rest of my life. To which I said "...no" and failed to get a new one made. Three years later my teeth are still straight. ETA: That's not to say he may or may not have been right; but it sounded like such a huge money grubbing scam to me I couldn't stand the idea of going through with it. Moral of the story, kids: be born with perfect teeth so you can avoid all this crap. (I don't mean to scare anyone out of braces, because straight teeth are pretty nice to have, but my experience was anything but pleasant.) |
