Title says it all. I mean compared to the PS4: a higher price, less appeal to international markets, region-locked, restrictions on giving and playing used games, always online Internet connection, the list goes on and on.

So what do you guys think? Does Microsoft even have a chance anymore?

Depends on games. I personally don't see myself buying the console, but I've seen plenty of people who are planning on getting it solely cause of games. After all, that's what consoles are for. Even if that means you can't lend games to friends.

I can't speak for everyone, but I do think that even if it isn't "finished" it will never be the preferred console for most gamers.

Specifically, the privacy concerns and the DRM issues will be the main reasons why gamers aren't going to like the system, and the price point will make it worse. The only reason I can see people going out and getting an Xbox One are for the exclusives, and if I'm not mistaken the recent installments of Microsoft's first-party titles like Halo have left many gamers feeling the franchises are getting stale.

I think PS4 is going to be the popular console by a large margin, assuming Microsoft doesn't suddenly change all of their policies one day.

Shouldn't count the Wii U out. They'll come out with stuff eventually.

I'm not discounting it, but I don't think it will outdo Sony and become the main gaming console of the generation. Unfortunately people seem to always have the mindset that Nintendo isn't even worth looking at, and when I bring up the Wii U people act like its not a real console.

If the Wii U can't get third party support, than the console will be all but dead. Michael Pachter (I know how much people hate him) estimates that the console will sell around 30 million units in its lifetime, because that's around how many Nintendo fans there are. I really hope that the Wii U does do well. The games they showed off at E3 look fantastic, even if most of them are first party.

As for the Xbox One, I think that most of the people who buy it are doing it out of brand loyalty. How could any of them still defend this console? :yuusaku:

.....WeeU?

My husband saw a trailer for Halo 5 and said it looked amazing, but he isn't gonna get it, simply because it's on the ONE. And I don't think I'm gonna get the ONE, either. I already have no room for more consoles, unless I move some stuff. The games it's bringing out don't interest me, the thing looks terrible (then again that isn't that big of a deal to me) the entire features of it are stupid.... like I mentioned before, I am not a very big fan of having my consoles connected to the internet. I don't like it and I don't need it. Apparently Microsoft wants to give players the Online Experiences of gaming, but..... console-wise I never had a different gaming experience online. Plus that whole used games and everything downloaded on it.... no thanks. Majority of the games I buy are used, mostly because it's cheaper, so they kinda shot themselves in the foot there. I'm sure I'm not the only gamer who prefers used games to newer ones, if it means saving money.

So... yes, I hope the ONE will crash and burn.
Hopefully with the developer team's heads rolling on the ground.

Even someone who's only really owned Nintendo consoles (yours truly) will admit this to be the truth.

On topic, Microsoft screwed up big time. My brother, who is a major Xbox fan, will no longer be buying an Xbox One due to how asinine its decisions and limitations are. Especially considering it'll cost an arm and a leg here in England. Something like £429 or something daft? Which is ridiculous, when the US gamers will get it for $499. It's not equal pricing, and just shows how much Microsoft only really gives a shit about America. Same with all the features they've got for the One. Who in Europe cares about NFL? Very few, I can guarantee :yuusaku:

I'm sure there's the fanbase for it, but either it's extremely small or they lose interest in the NFL Games really fast, because whenever I go to Gamestop, they have a ton of used NFL games they're selling. Then again, I don't quite get the stuff about playing soccer or other sports games instead of doing it yourself.
Well, except beach volleyball. I can't do that, there is no beach close-by.... that I know of.

Oh right, Pounds are more than Dollars. Then again, 499$ is a pretty huge amount of cash to throw out. Even if it were for a gaming console - then again, wasn't there an infamous point where the PS3 cost 599$? So either Microsoft is revealing what a money-grubbing little whorebag it is or they expect to fail with ONE because of it's giant price.

Although I think the price just added one more point to the "Why you should not buy this piece of crap" list.

If you think the Xbox One is bad in Europe, how do you think Japanese gamers will feel? Seeing as how the Xbox 360 barely sold 1.5 million units, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft removed Japan from their markets all-together.

Oh, and Microsoft has said to people without Internet connections to "buy an Xbox 360" instead of an Xbox One. :yuusaku:

Yup, saw that. :will:

It's like Sony stabbed Microsoft in the back and just kept twisting the knife deeper and deeper. It's impossible to defend the Xbox One now. I believe that Sony has stolen the show with E3 with the superior console. Honestly though, I don't have that much of an interest with the PS4 and I still think that $400 (while fair) is too expensive for my wallet. I'm probably just going to get a PS3 when they become dirt cheap.

But... but... the 360 also requires Internet at times!
What with the DLC and the Gold Membership, even a Silver Membership requires at least temporary Internet Connection! And the game demos and the chatting with friends and the e-Mail Sending-wait I do that on a PC why the fuck would I want to do that on a console? :eh?:

This is probably way out there, but does anyone think that Microsoft has some sort of contract with Internet service providers? I mean if it's required of people to have an Internet connection in order to play games on the Xbox One, don't you think Microsoft wants a cut of that deal? Assuming that the Xbox One sells decently enough, Internet service providers are going to see a sizable increase in their profits. I think Microsoft might want to get some of that profit if they're the ones primarily responsible. Again, this is all speculation on my part; but it could be possible.

That's exactly what Microsoft has done. They're basically saying "Here is a PC that is middle of the road by today's standards (High powered gaming PCs are already better than the next-gen consoles) but with all this DRM that totally screws over anyone who's not rich, and that will monitor everything you say 24/7".

And when someone asks how they can buy the product and use it in a way that will allow them to throw money at Microsoft, Microsoft responds with "If you don't have a constant internet connection, don't bother buying the product". A 5 year old can tell you that's a bad business strategy.

Doesn't anyone remember a time where video gaming consisted of going to a store, putting your money down at the counter, walking away with said game, going home, putting the game in your console, powering up, and playing it? And doesn't anyone remember a time where "lending a game" meant actually GIVING THE DAMN GAME to your friend!? Why does Microsoft see the need to change such an easy and common practice?!? :zenitora:

I live in a family with a very low budget for things like gaming, so the ability to buy used and lend games to family and relatives is imperative.

People point out that Steam has similar DRM to the Xbox, but Steam's prices are significantly cheaper for already released games and new games decrease in price just weeks after release.

[Also, Steam doesn't listen to everything you say 24 hours a day...]

My guess for the future is that Microsoft will come out with a firmware update that gets rid of this used game policy after the PS4 totally dominates the market, along with maybe a cheapter-than-the-ps4 price involving you having to be on Xbox Live Gold for two years or something.

I totally still do that for my games! E~xcept for the striken out part. ^^
I don't remember doing that when I was younger and still had my only game-friend, my brother, around and I don't do it now.

Really PCs are better than consoles for gaming?
Dammit, I need a job to buy myself one of those awesome ones so I can have tons of Expansions for Sims 3 and not worry about freaking long loading times.

It depends on the gaming. I'd never want to play something like Zelda on a PC, but games like FPS, Point-and-Click Adventure Games, Flight Simulators, and building games [I don't know about the sims but games like Roller Coaster Tycoon and SimCity were always more enjoyable with a mouse and keyboard].

When taking into account what I've noticed myself from playing Sims 3 on the 360 and what I've seen from the Sims 2 Console era, the Sims games are generally much better on PCs. As for RCT, dunno if that ever came out on a non-PC platform. I never played past Rollercoaster Tycoon 2.

Actually, I almost completely forgot about this console until today. I guess just like everyone else I was too busy looking at the Xbox One and PS4. :payne:

What's great is that it's going to be HDMI based, so the games will still look decent on a large flat-screen TV. Assuming that the emulation is good, one would have access to thousands of games across all those systems. It's also going to be under $100!

I was too late into the console game, so by the time I got a gamecube I never could find a complete game boy player. And with 3DS non-ambassadors not getting GBA games digitally this just may be my Game Boy Advance player.

I own an actual NES, original GameBoy, and a Coleco Gemini (basically a clone of the Atari 2600). I'm pretty big into retro gaming, and I find myself enjoying older games a lot more than most of the stuff that's out there today. It's the same with me for books, television, and movies too. I don't know, maybe I'm just a Nostalgiafag. Yes, that's a word.

No words, just the audience's reaction at the Sony press conference and the previous interview with Don Mattrick saying "Deal with it" solidify the hole that Microsoft has dug for themselves now.

I don't think that this means that they'll fail entirely, just that they're going to lose a fair bit of momentum going into the next console generation.

I'm just laughing at the slides they're presenting to the audience. It's pretty much a deliberate attack on Microsoft's stupid new game policies, and they're not being subtle at all. Not that it really matters, the whole thing is hilarious.

You know Microsoft are getting desperate if they have to make fake reddit accounts in order to praise the Xbox One.

Hahahahahhaha

Man Microsoft are burying themselves so hard with this.
Image

Of course.....

The Darkside of this is that if they HAVEN'T killed themselves and the diehard fans actually go out and buy enough to make this viable then it has set an incredibly dangerous precedent. That the companies can pull crazy aggressive anti-consumer stunts like this AND get away with it.

I hear Sony is already bringing in an implementation similar to Xbox Live where you need PS+ (the paid equivalent) to play online games.
If Xbox is given any leeway here for them to see this positively then the future of console gaming looks extremely dark to me. :yuusaku:
