I liked Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Still returned the game, it wasn't what I was looking for, but if I wanted to have a gateway game into RPG's, this might be it. Overall, the RPG parts felt a bit basic, and the adventure parts had answers that felt a little out-there, and the entire game felt very stripped-down: great for newcomers, still nowhere near the PM:TTYD sequel we're all looking for. And no, I don't count Super Paper Mario, even though it's a good game.
I liked Phantom Hourglass, but beating it once was enough for me. Which is strange, as I usually play Zelda games over again at some point.
I liked Silent Hill 3. It gets a lot of hate (when you remove Homecoming and Downpour from the discussion), and to be honest? Silent Hill 2 was a TOUGH act to follow. But despite the bad lighting, I love this game, and it's my favorite Silent Hill game. And before everyone gets up in arms, it's not the best in my opinion, for me it goes (
of the one's I've played):
- Silent Hill 2
- Silent Hill 3
- Silent Hill 4 (lower than the others due to the second half of the game being mostly escort mission with AI that makes Sheva's AI look brilliant)
- Silent Hill 1 (lower than the others because I find it counter-productive to base endings off of completion time for such an atmospheric title)
- Silent Hill Downpour (lower than the others because everything in the story felt re-hashed, though it's much closer to the original games than Homecoming, and the loss of inventory comes without any warning, and for some reason this game really tries to replicate Silent Hill 2)
- Silent Hill Homecoming (because while it changed, I felt a lot of the risks in the gameplay made sense with the storyline, despite Homecoming and Downpour hopelessly trying to replicate the success of 2, even more shamelessly than Downpour)
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (The controls and lack of pause while LOOKING AT THE MAP I NEED TO LEAVE made it impossible for me to play)
I also liked the Legend of Legaia sequel that many in the (albeit modest) fandom tends to dislike. In many respects, the Dual Saga is better and worse, fixing things that were troublesome in the first game, and creating whole new problems the first one didn't have.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and its sequel. I haven't played the first game, but many allegations against the other games is that they are (to put it more articulately), saccharine and void of substance. I always find that when more cartoony visuals are used, people instantly go "TOO KIDDIE WILL NOT PLAY FOR I AM AN ADULT WHO PLAYS ADULT GAMES!", and it pangs of immaturity (as apparently one can't be adult without constant maudlin story arcs and only three colors for their games: brown, grey, and muzzle flash/sword sparks). I'll also be the first one to say that the plot isn't too strong in FFTA2 (not to mention the law system can be annoying, especially with the victim-blaming system in FFTA2), but the plot in FFTA was still decent, handled seriously, and managed to pull off moral ambiguity without constantly hitting you in the face with LOOK WE'RE SO CLEVER BY MAKING THE BAD GUY HAVE A GOOD MOTIVE AND MAKING THE GOOD GUYS SLIGHTLY MORALLY AMBIGUOUS BY BEING SUPER SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE ~TORTURED SOULS~". But most of all, I like the gameplay. I am a huge sucker for a job/classed based tactics game where I have a good amount of customization of my party.
