Datalog. It's there and it's useful.
It's also optional, and updates so many times you quickly ignore it. You don't leave your plot down to optional things like that, it's just bad design. The Codex in FFXII? Great little bits! Optional. The Wizard's Compendium in Ni No Kuni? Also great and optional, possibly the best form of this. The same applies to the Codex's in Dragon Age and Mass Effect games or Jiminy's Journal from Kingdom Hearts
Occasionally you'll look there if you want to fluff out your game or read a document relevant to a sidequest (hardly a problem due to the lack of interesting sidequests in XIII) but you do NOT go there to read every little thing and you cannot count on it. If you have a story to tell, freaking tell it don't just leave it hidden in the vault of information somewhere because your players aren't buying the game to read the novelization.

I don't understand their relatinship, either! Why? Because it's a whirlwind one. What was it, it's said they met at Sera's school or something, a month ago and she brings him home, after only a month of dating him, and introduces him to her sister?
Also. Just look at that guy. He looks like a bum. He looks all brawn and no brain. Snow being the leader of NORA - No Obligations, Rules or Authority, doesn't help much because that name already implies that he is the type of guy who says "Screw the Rules!" and has no respect for any authority people.
Really now, I wouldn't be too thrilled if my daughter dated him, you really think I'd be happy if my sister did?
Granted, I don't have a sister... only a sister-in-law. But the point stands.
Doesn't matter whether Lightning enjoys the relationship or not. I'm not going to argue whether her opinion was right or wrong for it. You can claim it's an unbelievable relationship if you want, I hardly remember the game mentioning anything about it frankly but I do remember them showing the nice touching scene with the fireworks, and plenty of scenes showing the determination of Snow and Serah's love. Whirlwind and unbelievable if you like but the game makes it seem solid enough from what it shows.
Also he is a freedom fighter for a resistance group against the government....those mostly ARE bums. Looking at a list of freedom fighters, there's more like that. FF12 had Vaan and Penelo, freaking homeless children, FF7 had Barrett and Avalanche that live in slums, FF6 had Locke a thief and the returners live in a cave.
Compared to some of them Snow's actually pretty well dressed. Also if you had a group rebelling against the government what's wrong with a name that suggests you rebel against authority?

You thought you could be safe in your courts, with your laws and attorneys to protect you. In this world only I am law, my word is fact, my power is absolute.
