Although perhaps slightly over-rated on this site, it is still a very good game. The only thing that you can really complain about in the game is the hard learning curve mastering the dual screen combat and some of the touch screen controls don't work as well as they could. The story, characters and overall gameplay are good, and it is one of square's most innovative recent titles, it's worth a go.

Spoiler: Some advice
It's a really good real time RPG with a great story and the battle system while it has a tough learning curve, is fun. You can also pick a lot of the random battles, other than fights triggered by the story or fights with special kinds of enemies, you can choose your fights, and even with the special enemies you have some choice with them.
It's also a candidate for best game this year.
Basically you can go into this special mode where you see monster symbols, and if you avoid that mode you will only have story fights. In that mode (which you press this skull pin symbol on the bottom screen to access) you select a monster symbol to fight the monsters. But sometimes there are special enimies that will fly to you while you're in that mode and trigger a battle.
One thing of note though is that there isn't too much side-stuff until you beat the main story, after which it gives you a ton of bonus stuff to do.
Keep in mind too that it's a quirky game. The localization didn't change it's Jappanesey-ness.
The story is good, but not that great at 1st, it does pick up though.

Anyway, it's really, really good, if only a little confusing sometimes. The music is pretty cool and not all 8-bitty like some games (;D), and the art style kicks some serious ass. It's different and a lot of PW fans seem to like it, so I'd give it a shot.

Actually, after you beat the game you get to go through it again combing it for easter eggs that let you unlock some alternate ending. I'm not sure if it's worth it or not since I haven't found it yet, but it's something.

You're basically stuck doing the story first, and then you can do a HUUUUUUUGE load of stuff after it. They even let you skip the dialogue at hyper-speed because the developers knew you were going to play this game over and over and over, either for fun, or to find the secrets within each level.
This game has everything that a good RPG should have.
Fun gameplay.
Great characters.
Interesting dialogue.
Good difficulty.
Unique story.
Fantastic music and sounds.
A lot of rewarding side-quests.
Much originality.
I think it's the DS Game of the Year.
Plus, one of the characters has his own religion. That has to mean SOMETHING.

imho it is an excellent game. you'll see in the opening pages of this topic that i was not very kind to the game, especially since i hate things that are popular with weeaboos.. but, when i ended up getting it, i fell in love with it.
a lot of things come together perfectly for it in a way that i just have not seen since silent hill 2, to be honest. the art direction (characters as well as locations - speaking of which, locations in the game just look fantastic; they scale with your movement, so everything seems to be moving all at once for a very cool effect), the gameplay itself (the combat is just immensely fun when you get used to it), and the music (a mix of hardcore, j-pop, techno and j-rock) are all strong points. however, where it is lacking is the characters; though they get to be more likable the farther along you get until the point where you actually enjoying hearing what they have to say, i will tell you that i sincerely doubt you will be able to relate to them for a while unless you are an angsty 15 year old who hates people.
the story is a world of its own. it's strange enough to suck you in at first, and plot advances are revealed in such a way that will keep you invested in the game. i will tell you, though, that it's slow and kind of boring in the beginning, and that several times during the game something that happened during the time period that you had been playing in - like, say, at the end of one day - aren't revealed until a day later, AFTER you had already passed the point that said plot point happened, and are revealed sporadically at that. that was one thing that annoyed me.
my only other complaint you can't skip any scenes in the game; you can only speed through dialogue (after you beat the game, at that). cutscenes are entirely unskippable.

Well... That's not always a bad thing. This forum is based on what some might call an overrated game series. (I love it as much as all of you, but...well, I think you can understand what I mean.)

I'm not normally crazy over jRPGs in general (in fact, most of them make me want to barf), but I still really like this game. The story, as many people have said, starts out slow, but it's pretty good once you get into the game. The fighting is confusing at first. And the graphics aren't perfect, since it's a DS game, though they are pretty good. (Though the character design is kind of annoying, at least to me.) No game is perfect, though. (I personally think it's better than a lot of other games out there, but that's just my opinion.)

I have about 5635 health, 2000 of which is all from one item. Man I love it! I don't think it's even possible to get your health to 9999, though I'm not complaining. With all my stuff I can fight taboo noise on ultimate difficulty, at level 1.
