I love Fox's final smash.

Also, for everyone: if you register SmashNews@SmashBoards.com on your Wii, you'll get the updates on your Wii, too :)

First of all, you can't say he shouldn't be in Brawl simply because he "never attacked someone". Both Fox and Captain Falcon have never used most of their SSB moves in their games, so making up moves is most certainly not out of the question.

Second, it's been quite some time since anyone mentioned Phoenix in this thread but even if he probably wouldn't fit in you can't stop people from imagining, hoping or joking about Phoenix being in the game. They can make up movesets for whoever they want, even if they don't stand a chance of getting in, and that's really part of the fun.

The Thinker would be the best item to use on Brawl or even a psyche Locke!

Yeah characters from PW would suck but items no.

Anyway...

The Thinker- A bludgegoing item. You attack with it and it announces the time you have left to use it. When the time is up it explodes.

Psyche Locke-Traps the nearest character and that character can only move limitedly.

Well, the final update of the week. How are they going to close this week?

We've received a new character, a movie, a stage with three clips, two Assist Trophies in one, and one of the best-looking Final Smashes. I really hope they can end this week with a great bang!

Since another new character is more than likely not, I'll just guess Captain Falcon will finally be announced.

Today we had quite an update: Difficulty setting, teams and co-op in the Subspace Emissary. To say I'm nerding out from this update would be an understatement.

First, the co-op: Players work as a team, and the camera is always fixated on player one. If the second player gets left behind by the screen scroll, they get "special jumped" back to player one. They die normally if they're knocked off by an enemy, however.

Next, the map and difficulty: The Subspace Emissary uses an overworld map system. Each location has its own set of rules and/or life stock. Players choose their character before the selected area begins, and when they lose a stock will come back as the next member in the party. Additional party members can be recruited as the game goes along.

There are three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, and Intense. The higher the difficulty level, the greater the reward for completion.

And finally, there is a new, unknown way to power up that Sakurai has yet to reveal, which is "something we haven't seen before."

A great update. Hell, a great week of them overall.

EDIT: A few more notable details:

The Primid you're currently fighting will have a life counter in the corner, displaying its name and a picture as well as the amount of life remaining. Above that is a point counter, probably for how much your total will be at the end.

The decision of which princess to save from Petey Piranha does appear to matter, as whomever you manage to rescue joins Kirby's party. Likewise, Pit was descending to team up with Mario.

I wonder what that could be. I keep thinking of Adventure Mode for Soul Calibur... maybe you can customize your characters to change their movesets, increase damage dealt in certain areas (any of your special moves, throws, regular attacks, etc.), and/or your character can start to use unique kinds of attacks that wouldn't be for normal melee (like single enemy KO slice by Ike, Arwing strike by Fox, Yoshi stampede, etc.).

Quote:

It sure was. Even for someone like me who was upset over Lucas and such (don't worry, I've calmed down now), this was one hell of a week. Next week will probably be a few simple things, or feel like it in comparison.

EDIT!

Yah, seems like it. I remember the picture of Link and Yoshi together when Adventure Mode was officially announced. Now that I think about it, this might be interesting...

You think that Adventure mode will be the second way to unlock hidden characters (first playing VS. mode enough times like in Melee)? I wonder if you can only 'fully' complete it once you've unlocked them all.

I really like this.
Co-op is awesome, as indeed, I did fight with my brother about it ;)
But even better is the fact that everyone has to learn to use every character now, so you can't just wimp out and keep stuck with one - which also means everyone at least has a try at every character, which gives more variety. Woot.
I also like how you can now choose stages seperately and not having to do a 10 minute - half an hour sit for Adventure mode.

It's co-op, not tag team. Tag team would imply switching out at will, which you can't do without dying.

You had to do that in Melee, too. The only real difference this time is the actual difficulty levels themselves.

Today's Update was simply amazing. So much Info, It's no wonder why they saved it for Friday.

Anyway, I was playing around with the Character select screen and I found out a few things:
Image
It appears that each row can hold 7 character icons and the screen can hold up to 5 rows before possible scrolling (note the red arrow in lefthand bottom corner). So, We can safely guess that we are getting at least around 35 characters based on this info. Heck with scrolling, We might get even more characters. :sal:

Ah, but there a few inconsistancies there. For starters, each "team" only has two members on it, but the game says there are three. Therefore, it can be assumed that the player(s) have already chosen those characters to start with, and the "arrow" may be the indicator to push a button to proceed.

Also, despite the fact that all of the teams can fill seven characters, that doesn't indicate that all of the characters in the game will be involved, nor that any team has to necessarily be full. Making an assumption without that knowledge isn't going to be concrete proof of anything yet.

Alas, that is all true.

Hey, Orca, how many characters do you think are going to be in the game, and who you hoping for most? As the update and unofficial referee of this topic, I'm somewhat curious to know.

In fact, I'm curious about everyone. Personally, I think there are going to be 50 characters, and I'm hoping that Krystal, Geno, Shantae, and Jill Valentine get in SSBB.

I'm going to guess that there will be between 35 - 40 characters total. That's from taking the 21 we already know about, adding the veterans most likely to return and two additional slots for 3rd party characters, then about an additional 5 - 10 spaces for more newcomers.

As for who I think/hope will return:
- Captain Falcon
- Ganondorf (with a new/different moveset)
- Mewtwo
- Jigglypuff
- Game & Watch
- Luigi (with a new move, like Mario)

Basically, characters with original/changable movesets. The clones for the most part are gone, or may simply be costume changes if applicable.

Newcomers:
- Lucario
- Wolf/Krystal (probably not both)
- An Animal Crossing character

Lucario would not only be a good fighter with a large variety in attacks, he's also a popular, well-known rep for the 4th Pokémon generation. Either Wolf or Krystal would be nice, as the series needs more representation. If Krystal is chosen, though, I hope she uses her staff.

3rd Party choices:
- Sonic
- Megaman (original or X, either's fine)
- Isaac (Golden Sun)
- Django (Boktai series)

Sonic's speed and moves would make him great for brawl. Megaman could have several of the different robot masters' powers mapped to him.

If I think of anymore, I'll edit this post.

I'd agree with you except Lucario, because I think it's nonsense that "every generation needs a rep" - Pokémon would get far too much "reps". Also, that isn't even possible anymore.
And I'd add Captain Olimar and the possible newcomer from the brand new series Miyamoto is working on :)

There's far more to Lucario than just rep, though. He has great moves, a nice character design and a fighting style that would potentially make him a physical/hand-to-hand equivilent to psychic-themed Mewtwo (SSB wise, of course). His reputation serves as his key, as they do take fighters into consideration by popularity, among other things.

Besides, counting Lucario that would be five characters, which is the same amount the Mario series got in Melee (and just one less for Pokémon). While it would probably be a little much, it's not an impossibility, especially if either Mewtwo or Jigglypuff don't make it back.

I suppose, though I think Olimar would make a better Pikmin-themed AT.

You know, Mario Bros. had 5 people (six or seven if you count DK and/or Yoshi). Legend of Zelda had 4 people, Pokémon had 4 people. So why do some people always so defensive whenever people suggest more Pokémon characters? I see it in fake line-ups, no new Pokémon characters or only one, while many many more Mario and Zelda characters.

Sadly, I guess the prejudice attitude towards Pocket Monsters will never die; some people will always see it as a kiddie game (regardless of how children can no way memorize and master the understandings behind the more and more complex game).

Lucario is a great choice; he's Steel/Fighting, what better for a fighting game? He has, like Orca said, many abilities and powers, sleek look, and possibly something that the anti-Poképeeps would like: the ability to speak English/Japanese, rather than squaking his name. I also think Blaziken would be a great choice.

Besides, if there were truely a representative for every generation, that would mean 4 Pokémon, because there are 4 generations. 4 isn't that much.

I just hope they don't remove Mewtwo. They really screwed him up in the last game, but that's no reason to give up on him and drop him from the roster. They should at least redo him (possibly completely) so that his apparent low-tier position can shift higher and tourneyfags will stop going on about how 'MYUUU22222 SUXX0RZ'.

Don't forget about the great equalizer that was announced alongside Ike's appearance - heavier/slower characters may have "unstoppable" attacks that will always take priority. This puts a major dent in the "speed game" that dominated gameplay so much in Melee. There's reasonable chance that "handicapped" characters like Mewtwo and GW could get a bit of an upgrade in this manner.

Mmmh, my list of people that should be included:

- An EBA. But that is unlikely to happen, as the series appear to be directed at the japanese audience (some characters from japan-only games? WTF?). Preferably Commander Kahn.

- Megaman (original) and X-storyline Zero. Perhaps some of the bosses too, like Yellow Demon, Commander Yammark and Sigma, to name a few.

- Derek Styles. Why not?

- Phoenix Wright. Obvious.

- Angry video game nerd with his ZAPPER GUN, FOUL MOUTH and POWER GLOVE!!!..... or maybe not. :gant:

- Ryu and/or Nina from Breath of Fire (original, I'd say).

- Midna.

- I've senced a distinct lack of Square Enix characters. If they ever decide to include those, I'd wagger for Black Mage, Lydia w. summons, Chrono, Caim (well, Cavia game, but it's SE destributed), Omega Weapon and FF10 behemoth as bosses.

- Gamm the dragon from Little Samson, Nes (obscure games FTW).

- The 4 big playstation hits - Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Croc and Gex Gecko.

- Little Mac from Mike Tysons Punch-out

- Battletoad. (punchpunchpunchpunch...PUNCH! kickkickkickkick... KICK!)

... thats all I can think of for now.

Sakurai said that he wanted to include "one or two more" third-party characters. So if Capcom'd give permission to use one, it'd be Megaman.
Remember that this is still a Nintendo game, not an Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny.
(.. would be cool, but yeah..)

And something about the Pokémon: I don't want more Zelda and Mario reps, either. I never said that. But, I assume that Jigglypuff will still be in (veteran), which means we got, includingt he Pokémon Trainer, already 3 "reps" of the first games of Pokémon. That wouldn't leave much space, especially if they'd include Mewtwo, too.

One last thing: Never, never EVER, use potential movesets as an argument. You can think of a moveset for anyone, so it basically doesn't count ;)
