You know, when casting voices, directors usually go for a voice they think fits the character rather than forcing an actor to match the voice they want. Megumi Hayashibara basically had two voices; a high-pitched, energetic teenage girl voice (Lina Inverse, Ranma Saotome, etc.) and a somewhat deeper voice for more world-weary characters like Faye Valentine and, oh god I don't know, Haruka from Love Hina? Yet she's still one of the most famous and popular Japanese voice actors of all time.

I mean, you don't watch a Robert de Niro movie and say "God, this guy looks and sounds exactly the same in every movie he's in, why doesn't he change it up a little?"

An Actor is different from a Voice Actor. At least for me. A VA has to be able to alter his voice to various ranges, while an actor doesn't have to do that. He has to, well, act with his body and facial expression. The focus is somewhere completely else. OH GOD NO NOT THE ANTS! Noooooooo!!

PS: And on a personal note, I find Laura Bailey's voice is the worst to pick if they want a seductive one.

Attending some voice acting panels in the past, I've found that that's not necessarily what companies are looking for. Sure, being able to have a range of voices is fantastic, but their main concern is you can act convincingly enough to sound natural when playing your parts.

As for Laura Bailey, I like her. I don't think the voice she does for Catherine is the right choice for being a seductress, but hearing her performance as Lust in FMA, I think she can pull it off well. In fact, my first exposure to her had to do with YuYu Hakusho as Keiko, DBZ as Young Trunks, and FMA as Lust, and considering those voices are each vastly different from each other and how well she pulled them off, it made me come to appreciate her talents. Granted, don't care for Young Trunks, but that's a different story.

Troy Baker, I personally like his acting. He does a very fine job at what he does. As for Yuri and Johnny, I think a lot of it has to do with voice direction. The people who hire them like the voices they use so they make them use them over and over again.

Honestly though, I find it hilarious that out of all the people everyone has mentioned that get typecasted with their voices, no one has yet to bring up Vic Mignogna. He's either grunts or Edward Elric in like everything. And heaven forbid he changes his voice to something other than Edward Elric's, the fangirls will not allow it.

I think Vic voiced Hope? And also one of the guys in Catherine? Then again, I honestly can't recall, likely a less important NPC so I mostly check the subtitles than the voice. Btw I read something about "Japanese language track"... is there DLC for this game? I doubt it, but I might as well ask.

Reminds me of the first time I picked up Persona 3. First time Junpei spoke, I was like, "Oh hi Ed, when did you become the janitor?"

You're thinking of Vincent Martella.

Vic... Vincent... one could be seen as a nickname of the other.

You know, while I haven't finished Catherine yet, I do feel somewhat torn about Vincent as a character. On one hand, he's an average joe, who is working a new job, one that he seems to rather like and is in a steady relationship with a woman for a few years now, but with no big ambitions and happy to coast along.
So his reaction to his girlfriend (and, more to the point, his girlfriend's family) suddenly talking marriage and wanting a bigger commitment is quite shocking to him. Even more so when said girlfriend also says that she's late and might be pregnant - this is already a shock for him and a pretty big, realistic shock for most people who are in a relationship and have not really planned on having children (yet).

That part makes sense and is actually quite nice. Makes it somewhat easy to see things from his point of view. Relateable and all. And yet... his wishy-washy attitude regarding the Katherine and Catherine thing seems kind of... dumb. I mean, okay, Catherine personifies practically everything he wants in a perfect, sexy and slightly kinky, sadistic girlfriend, so maybe it's difficult to say no to a girl that is practically everything you want. And is willing to give it to you, too.
But Vincent's behavior later on is just appalling.
Aside from continuously not nutting up, there's also the potential doubt put into his mind that Katherine might be cheating on him. And during the conversation where he asks this (at least, in my current file where I am practically at maximum Law/Blue/Good/Commitment), he asks Katherine if there is "anything she needs to tell him".

...this coming from the guy who has been beating himself up over having cheated on his girlfriend for the last five nights, including the awkward lie of trying to stop her from seeing the other girl! And yet HE asks if there's anything SHE needs to tell HIM? What an asshole! Instead of asking "Is there anything you need to tell me?" he should say "This guy called and said he's your boyfriend... I'll be honest, I'm kinda... worried. But I wanted to ask you, since I don't believe what someone else says." Or better yet, if Katherine cheating is supposedly such a hug deal to him, why not flat out admit things about Catherine to her? At least then I could say, okay, he's an asshole with the cheating, but at least he isn't talking in a way to try to make himself look better.

I know spoilers and all for the game, so no need to somehow "correct" me on things. I'm just trying to express how confused this guy makes me feel. And not in a good way. Then again, maybe I'm pissed that his constant lack of balls just leads to more puzzles. Man up, decide already and no more nightmares!

Well, you're right about that the story doesn't make much more sense. It's just that the theme of the game is cheating with Vincent's struggle to remain faithful or giving in to lust. There are segments every day where you make 'decisions' based on how faithful or not you have been and he's nervous and doubtful in everyone of them.

Being tense, nervous and paranoid makes sense when you want to cheat.
When you have done nothing but being faithful and want to remain being faithful then this behavior makes no sense.

So I meant it more like: The chaos answers lead to the correct atmosphere for the game to be played.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

Yeah but... well, I don't condone cheating. And I overall find it dumb to break up with your longtime girlfriend to hook up with the random stranger you hooked up with recently, when you can't even REMEMBER what you did! Btw the boss of the third stage... that thing with the eyes and tongue? ...I honestly thought it was supposed to represent breasts and eyes where the nipples would be. Others say it's supposed to look like a butt...

Then again, I overall tend to mute the music eventually. The classical pieces used are indeed nice, especially what I had on Stage 6 the Clock Tower... it's familiar but I can't remember the title... but it gets annoying after a while. And especially the boss stages. I don't need Mecha-Baby yelling Grggggggrrrraaaagh at me when it's trying to say Daddy or... that boob-butt thing moaning... it's distracting as anything!

Also, rapunzel... Aaaargh! I'm only in the 30ish Stages and I hope I can find a video guide that goes for all 64 Stages + the other 64 Stages. (So many puzzles... makes me want to cry...) Oh but I DID unlock Persona 4's Alone music! I just randomly got the "Drink till everyone else is gone" when, really, I had been TRYING to do the same thing all the time. I honestly thought Catherine entering the bar didn't count... given revelations and all.

Catherine Undub Gameplay. Fucking hell, I wish the game would've officially given me a dual audio option. Wakamoto makes Vincent actually seem pathetic, the way he should be. Troy Baker just... doesn't.

Things! Close-ups! Animations! Mega evolutions! Excitement!
(If you don't get the reference, I'm pointing out that having the battles quickly progressing was pushed aside in favor of special effects)

Eh... debatable. While I think the new gens are slower paced compared to the much older gens, Gen. 4, especially Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum are definitely the slowest paced I think. Compare it to Gen. 5, which feels much faster.

Gen 5 was Black/White? I like the design of the female trainer there. I'm giving Gen 4 another shot on Pearl, though I'm wondering if I should get... Platinum was the "both" versions one? I know the heroine suddenly went from black tanktop to... red wintercoat... why?

Yeah, it's the special effects! Even when I turn them off (cause I really do not need to see bubbles when I pick bubbles as an attack) it feels like it's taking too long... then again, maybe my memory of the first few generations is wonky cause I tend to play those on emulators with a LOVELY speed up button on my side...

I don't hate Pokémon. (Sure I hate the fact that they constantly bring out new games which are basically just the same game over and over, but with weirder designs for the beanie babies monsters) I just overall tend to end up finding it boring halfway through (I think in Pearl, the farthest I got was to... Fatina? That four-ball-hairdo purple lady) because it really is just the same thing over. Go here, grab pokemon, level up, fight gym leader, repeat.
And I overall found the ideas with Team (Name)... dumb.

That's pretty much what Pokemon IS, so unless you're planning to start battling online, there's probably not much point in playing them.

Hey! I managed to get Gold on the last Stage of Catherine on my own. Probably helped cause I had to do the last stretch so many times, I kinda know it now... now if I manage that on Normal/Hard, it'd be better. Still gotta do the last few stages once more for Freedom ending and then I can do a Catherine run.

And seriously, Danny, your swipes at me are getting A LITTLE annoying and frequent, doing them, especially over a span of months. I'm asking you nicely now: tone them down. Yeah different Pokémon in each game. Additionally there is a different unique city in each game. I think for white its some foresty town whereas in black I think its a big industrial town.

Only thing I'm surprised right now is that I my White is in German. Sure you might say, why is that weird since I'm in Germany, but considering most games I purchase end up playin in English on my consoles, anyway, I'd expect Pokemon to be the same. Especially since it doesn't flat out mention on the box what language the text will be displayed as. (Also, come on, if you're gonna sell a game, please remove your old savefile. Otherwise, I have to learn that Pokémon is incapable of saving over an old file... strange since it asks me if I want to do that later on, anyway, but now I have to go through the intro again)

I'm probably late on this, but I'd definitely pick Black. In my opinion, Gen V is one of the best whereas Gen IV is one of the worst. Black plays faster, has a better story, and while I question some of the Pokemon designs, I just feel it's overall better. And saving doesn't take one to two minutes, but only a few seconds! Surfing doesn't feel super slow either.

Got White. Although I still don't see why shoes are considered technology... I mean, if one of the things I could get was a hoverboard after getting a skateboard in the early gens, that I'd think make sense with technology. But... running isn't necessarily something that makes me think technology...

Well since I have to redo the intro, wondering if I should alter my starter. I THINK I recently read that the Fire pokemon is the better one to start off with because... Unova only had one or two fire pokemon to begin with? Or was that Gen IV? And I kind wish the game would give me an option to say "No thanks. I can/want to figure out on my own how to catch Pokemon." I mean, yeah, the general demographic for Pokemon is kids, but unless they change the mechanics dramatically, can't they at least allow me to skip the tutorial?

PS: Now that I redid Stage 9 in Catherine often enough to get half of the endings, I can delete those saves and do a completely new, Normal (or even Hard?) playthrough to go the Catherine routes and once again for True Freedom. (Vincent's gonna be a spaceman!)

...That was a joke. No one in the game mentions running shoes as a sign of technological progress. It's just the game letting you know that running is now an option, when it wasn't in the first two generations.

You'd think since running is overall something in majority of games, anyway, (even in games before Pokemon was released) it wouldn't have to be pointed out at all in-game. Heck, just put it in the manual. I mean, I initially try to see if I can run in a game, anyway. Which I usually can with B or Y or similar.

Awkward Zombie shows us the crux of the entire plot of Bravely Default... while I haven't played that specific game, I think this could actually be used to explain majority of problems in majority of games, anyway.

But... running isn't necessarily something that makes me think technology...

It's Gen IV that lacks Fire Types. Another reason why I really didn't care for it. And even then, I think one of the choices was Ponyta, who in my opinion is not too great and comes from an older Gen. In fact, I think the Fire type boss in that game doesn't even have a full set of Fire Pokemon because of that limitation. Platinum fixed it somewhat by adding more, but it still didn't do too much.

Black and White, you'll still be able to find a fire type if you don't start out with one. As for the catching tutorial, it doesn't bug me because it's short and fast, especially compared to some other mandatory tutorials in other games. At least they don't shoehorn tutorials around every single corner. Considering it's only one to two minutes out of a potential 30 to 40 hours of gameplay, it's really not that much of a sacrifice. Sure, it'd be nice to say no, but again, I only see it as a minor gripe considering it only happens once.

And if you want an example of Pokemon REALLY catering to kids, look at FireRed and LeafGreen and the Teachy TV. At least that was all optional

I played LeafGreen (I am apparently stuck on the Seafoam Islands or so) and I didn't notice much that really catered to kids.

Yeah, I'm mostly referring to the Teachy TV, which gives a tutorial for just about every mechanic and whatnot in the game. It caters to first time players, but you can ignore it.

Awkward Zombie shows us the crux of the entire plot of Bravely Default... while I haven't played that specific game, I think this could actually be used to explain majority of problems in majority of games, anyway.

Definitely. I still was able to enjoy the game, but it's rather annoying how many tragedies could have been averted in games by a simple "why are you doing this?" conversation between adversaries. Then again, that problem is far from exclusive to games.
