Tales of Xillia 2 - should I buy it: Yay or Nay?

I kinda like the story being told, from what little I read, though I honestly want to see just HOW obvious they make the... relation-revelation obvious from the get go. (I mean, I found Symphonia made it way past easy early on, myself, so if other people say this one is easy, I wonder...) But I read some people think Xillia 2 is more of an "expansion" to Xillia than a full game?

C-A

I found the main story to be shit. Okay, at first, I liked the direction the story went, but then more and more plot threads kept coming in, and the more I looked into them, the more stupidity I found. Xillia 1's cast are just kind of there, while the whole story is about the original characters. Sure, they have their own character side-stories, some of which are nice, but they don't have much of a reason to hang around Ludger and Elle. I wasn't very fond of Xillia 1's cast (except for the mutton man and maybe Leia), but for a game titled "Tales of Xillia 2," you'd expect a story that followed those characters.
And then there's the new characters. Ludger, being a silent protagonist, just can't get across the character they wanted to get across. And aside from Elle's smart-ass moments, there wasn't much to like about them. One of the characters I feel I should have really liked, but they hardly show enough of him to get to know him before you duel him (that's not a spoiler, the game opens up with a flash-forward of the duel). That twist you mentioned, I can think of two. One was never even mentioned in the game and only in additional reading materials, and the other was so obvious, my little brother figured it out, and he was the one guy who thought Sophie was killed off for real.
As for the gameplay, Ludger is extremely fun to play as. The combos you're able to pull off with him put the rest of the series to shame. Unfortunately, the other party members just can't keep up with him, so there's no reason to play as anyone but Ludger, who has the side-effect of Elle constantly shouting at everything you do during battle, like the navigators from Persona 3/4. (I know it's weak to Earth, shut up!) Aside from that, most of the areas and bosses are all reused from the first game. There are around four new dungeons and six new bosses plus the cameo fight.
And then there's something that a lot of players found to be incredibly annoying: the debt system. Anytime you want to advance the story forward, you need to pay off part of Ludger's massive debt. Granted, if you play it right, you should be able to make enough gald in 5-15 minutes.

tl;dr Xillia 2 is like an f arc stretched to 60 hours, except it has little to do with the original story. Don't get it unless you can find it cheap (I paid $14 dollars for mine).

Well, to be honest, I don't mind that. I mean, okay, I haven't played Xillia, but I don't mind the sequel being about the new cast. Especially if - considering what I read - Milla was repeatedly shilled as teh ossumz and Jude was just there in the first game. Though, I admit, the fact that Ludger is a silent protagonist is a bit... different.

Ugh... well, at least Elle is not voiced by Laura Bailey in English, nor whoever the obnoxious people in P3 were. And if I manage to make it through P3's obnoxious cast telling me "Attack the enemey", I guess I can make it through this.

Well, I checked Gamestop and, for new, it would be 20€. 17€ if it's used, though the store I was at didn't have it. I mean, it sounds interesting enough... but the game doesn't have Dual Audio, does it? Pretty sure it doesn't... it'd be cool. But I checked the voices and, well, at least the main characters are not Bosch/Baker/Bailey/Lowenthal.

Is Xillia better? I mean, I'll be honest, when I saw gameplay of it when it originally came out, it didn't look all that to me.

Actually I have Windwaker...

The only two good games out of a 25 year span, huh? :will:
Nah, but Windwaker lost me pretty fast. And the HD version did not change anything that would make me try it again. (Last time I played the game, it was solely to get pictures and even that I gave up after the obnoxicity of getting Periwinkle Tingle)

I probably couldn't say. The gameplay is much more balanced, but it also suffers from lag around 10% of the time. The bosses are all capable of breaking out of combos at any time. And the story is nothing new for Tales of. Anyone who's played at least three games in the series could figure out the entire plot. If I had to pick, I'd say get the cheaper option.

PS: Apparently there's a "This is how you don't play Tales of Xillia 2." Popcorn time.

EDIT: There are more detailed posts comparing the two on /r/tales if you want a better analysis.

@Cat: Nay, unless you really liked Xillia and can find it for cheap.

Granted, me and my friend only got... 10~15 (IIRC) hours in before my friend's PS3 crashed and we lost our save data. For what it's worth, we decided Xillia 2 wasn't really worth restarting and have been playing Diablo 3 since.

So I've decided to replay the entire Call of Duty Modern Warfare trilogy, especially the third one as I blitzed through the campaign without caring and it what was going on. So now that I've finished it all, my thoughts on MW3 still remain the same: it's just mediocre. There's a few action pieces, but no shocking or memorable moments other than Soap dying. Seems like Infinity Ward half-assed this game just so it could be a trilogy.

I'm one of the ones who still thinks CoD 4 is the best of the franchise. Unlike the airport massacre or the child dying, CoD 4 actually had a shocking and profound moment. I'm talking about the Aftermath mission. For the game to kill off your seemingly invincible character and then treat them as nothing more than a statistic is the perfect way to drive home the message that war is hell (as if the death quotes weren't subtle enough). Of course Call of Duty glorifies war. But CoD 4 shows us what happens in the end. You don't get glory, just death and a hole in your soul.

MW2? Well, the Washington D.C. missions were awesome. I consider them to be the highlight of any Infinity Ward Call of Duty. The invasion of America actually felt meaningful, unlike MW3 where Russia invades Europe. Suddenly the drama is lost when over half of the game is spent in that setting.

Oh, and MW3's music is completely forgettable. The other two games had some pretty awesome and catchy themes.

Ah, Sonic Unleashed. It would have been infinitely better if you didn't have to collect medals to open the next stage. It's like the game doesn't want you to play.

And when I'm talking about CoD, I'm only talking about the single player. Screw competitive multiplayer.

Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker will come out in Europe on the 30th. And it only costs 40€! Dude, I thought it'd be 49.99€ or so. But yeah, think I'll get it. I did get the original DS version a while ago and first thought I wouldn't get RB because I already have the game, but... dunno, maybe the enhanced remake adds things. (Though I'll be honest, I think the joke of "Hey, Miyako, are you Yamato - just in drag?" will get old very fast.) I highly doubt it'll have Dual Audio, but hey. I play Overclocked with voices turned off. I can do the same with this, I'm sure.

Woot! I managed it! I managed to get the True Freedom ending!
Now I just need to redo the last three levels of Stage 9 AGAIN (this will be the 3rd time) cause I didn't get Gold. And fuck me, I will not wait to unlock the last Babel level until my next playthrough. Though I still haven't managed to even win the first Babel level...

Catherine. Now that I've managed to get the Bad Katherine ending, as well as the True Freedom one by redoing the last three levels of Stage 9, the only two endings I still require are the Good and True Catherine ones. And I managed to get Gold on all Stages, finally, because the last stage has way too much fake difficulty in it, so I had redo it a few times because fuck proper difficulty. Atlus? You are good at giving us proper difficulty, so why bother adding fake one in the final stages?

And after getting all story endings, the only one still needed is climbing Babel... joy... :sadshoe:

Babel is batshit insane mode. You have to clear hundreds of randomized levels (no walkthrough can help you) and in the upper levels you'll need to avoid more traps than neo could block bullets in the matrix. The first stage is do-able, but the rest of them will deal some serious damage to your sanity.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

I know. I think my best highscore for Babel's 1st level was 120-130 steps. Managed up to 100 last, but then fucked up. I just suck at 3D puzzle-thinking and thinking ahead. Sorry, but when blocks are falling and the ground beneath me is disappearing, I ain't thinking of 10 steps ahead, I go for what's right in front of me.

Depending on the game, scene or quality of the overall music, that's not bad. (I stop playing Pokémon with sound on because half the time, it's the battle music and the rest of the time, I don't hear the various tracks cause I'm on my bike, because that's my goddamn fastest fucking way of travel)

I remember why I stopped playing Lollipop Chainsaw months ago. I was on the farm, an area which is long, BORING and requires heavy usage of the Chainsaw Blaster. That thing is a pile of shit to have been invented and turned into a mechanic in this game. Also, too much shit at me at once during the boss battle.

I want to say that I heard that Babel had a glitch in single player mode where it made one of the levels impossible to beat no matter what you did. You'd have to do 2 player to get around it. I can't remember though if it was on the PS3 version or the 360 version, but I remember it was only present in one of the versions whereas the other one ended up fixing the glitch.

Yes, the final level: Axis Mundi. I didn't read about it being a version exclusive thing, though, I read it was a problem in the North American release of the game, period.

My Pokémon Y Nuzlocke is in the 2nd Gym now. I already lost my starter and a Budew I caught later. I also lost my Amaura against Relicanth in the 2nd Gym because, for some reason, Rock Throw REALLY harms my Ice/Rock Pokémon... weird. I also caught an Eevee that I named Shadow, intending to turn it into an Umbreon (What is it with Eevee being against being put into Luxury Balls!? It only went into the last one I had...) But it has a decreased SP Atk Nature, which I don't know... does that matter for Umbreon? (I know it does for Espeon)

I also continued my Live A Live LP and finished the Sci-Fi scenario. A guide said that the scenario has no battles except the boss one, but is still interesting. They're right.

Not really, SpA is Umbreon's worst stat (not that it's Atk is much better.) Umbreon's best as a wall/tank, IIRC most people run something like
Toxic
Moonlight/Wish
Protect
Some kind of attack move so you don't get totally shut down by Taunt

So I can still have a good/decent Umbreon (fighter), even if it gets minus Sp Attack? I mean, with Sp Attack sucking, I can't really turn it into an Espeon or a Sylveon. I could make it a Flareon, but my Fletchling is already a decent Fire attacker. (It, too, has sucky Sp Atk, but it's still decent) What about Glaceon?

I'm not a competitive battler, so I like to forgo Protect in favor of Confuse Ray. I have just never really found too many uses for Protect in the single player game myself.

I don't play competitive, either. I still prefer to have a decent nature on the pokémon I catch. Never use Protect, either. I mostly ignore all kinds of status buffs/debuffs moves and just go for offensive.

Yeah, reduced SpA is pretty much the best way to go with Umbreon unless you go reduced speed with Curse/Trick Room or something

There's not a lot to do with Glaceon honestly, it has good SpA but it's slow and frail and has lousy coverage...

Protect helps Toxic stall mostly, personal preference but Confuse Ray is a bit too much of a crapshoot for me

I personally learned to love a Confuse Ray/Toxic setup after my Umbreon completely swept Claire's team while being pretty underleveled. Seeing the Kingdra fall like that was so satisfying. In the end, I do think Protect is the way better option, but in single player, the only thing Protect really does is annoy me when the AI uses it as a pointless stall tactic.

To be completely fair though, I do much prefer having Confuse Ray on a Pokemon that can also inflict Paralysis.
