I've read that some are unlocked as you meet/play as them, while others are unlocked by fighting them. You probably don't need to unlock any to further the story, either.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing, but what happens when the story is at a point where you meet (insert unlockable character here), but you haven't unlocked them yet?

I never thought I would say that I was disappointed in Brawl, but... I sort of am. :/ It needed more new characters.
It's mostly that it seems planned wrong - lots of the starting roster is build out of nice, new characters, while the unlockables are mostly veterans. We still have a great roster, but we knew the cool bits already, so it's not as fabulously awesome.

Things of import:
-The option of choosing which character you start as when playing as Pokemon Trainer or Zelda/Sheik.
-Descriptors for the varying levels of computer opponent, and a promise that AI will be fiercer.
-Registering player profiles from the character select screen, with little of the hassle that Melee had.
-Stages are arranged by Brawl, Melee, and Custom categories.
-Random characters are hidden until the start of the match.

Eh, there was no-one else who predicted ROB, and if Wolf is added, the characters will line up by game vertically. It's not irrefutable, but it is very plausible.

And anyways... for the 35 characters, there's either 35, or 34. It's already been proven.
How? Simple. The design. Look at the Melee character box design: 2 rows full, 1 cut off briefly. The same is for here... 'cept an added row.

There have been quite a few unlockable stages shown. From memory: Big Blue (SSBM), Luigi's Mansion, Electroplankton, Mario Bros. (as in the very first one, with the pipes at the top), Port Town (F-Zero), Tetra's Ship (Wind Waker), and Final Destination. And there are probably more. Plus, remember that you can make your own.
EDIT: The character screen was also filled to the brim, but the character boxes got smaller as they progressed.

And they already have that - there's a seperate page for the Melee (and possible N64) stages, and a seperate one for the home-made ones.

No, and it's also exactly the leak someone posted shortly before release. So yes, this is it.
Note that there are clones, but not as clone-ish as in Melee, more Luigi-fied:
Fox has Wolf AND Falco - yet, Falco's reflector can be "thrown", he seems to have two guns and a bazooka , and Wolf is slower and heavier, has a gun similar to the ray gun.
Mario has Luigi - speaks for itself.
Lucas has Ness - but as we saw, Lucas is quite different from SSBM's Ness, and SSBB Ness is basically SSBM's.
Link has Young Link - but Young Link actually has the attributes of SSBM's Link, which means no charge in his B-Up, meaning it's faster, and also no clawshot and the likes.
Ike has Marth - but they share only one ability, which is B-down, Counter.
(This is all I could make up out of the videos.)

I have a feeling that if they did that, it probably wouldn't have gotten people as excited for Brawl as they had been.
There is also another Pokémon stage, based on a location in Diamond and Pearl, and Green Hill Zone, which I don't think would be unlocked before Sonic himself.
