I suppose if there were ever a thread to display why fanboyism / antifanboyism makes you look like a raving lunatic, this is one of them.

I don't really see why people expect companies to bend over backwards for you every time something you do damages one of their products. If this were a tv, and you put your foot through it, would you expect Sony to pay for that too?

As I stated earlier most of the repair charge Sony is applying to the PSP has little to do with the "repair" itself; it's more about labor--processing the repair, giving the new plate, and then shipping. People don't work for free, so why would you expect your repair to be the same way?

1. I have warranty.
2. This wasn't actually my fault.
3. Even if something like this was my fault, it would only happen with Sony. Nobody sells parts as cheap as Sony does.

1. Didn't you already admit you voided your warrenty by modding it...?
2. No one has any way of knowing if that's true. Companies aren't in the business of giving you the benefit of the doubt.
3. Tell that to Anders' dead Gamecube Wellington

Stupid marketing decisions are part of a company's marketing department; most companies do really stupid shit. UK Sony just...tends to do them more outrageously.

I mean, doesn't anyone remember when Acclaim tried to advertise on tombstones, or is this just a 'ra ra Nintendo booooo Sony!' type of discussion?

I don't see any comparisons made by Shaun about Nintendo and Sony unless I miss something. But I did catch him saying that Sony sells their parts cheap.

Which I don't get, because I thought Sony products was "overpriced". Sal

There you go.

The reference to Nintendo was not that he's touting one over the other, but that the general arguement seems to pedal back to 'well Nintendo does ___' in comparison, as if they were a superior company for some unkown and unfounded reason. That, and not many people (outside of myself) have mentioned Microsoft.

Uh-huh. Nick My DS is in far worse shape than the PSP under similar treatment- while my PSP only has cosmetic damage (scratched screen- I've tried to polish the scratches away but it doesn't work- Edgeworth and I'm currently debating whether or not to get a replacement faceplate- the warranty's void anyway since it's an unofficial import so that's not what I'm worried about) my DS Lite has a broken hinge (accidentally dropped it- but only from a coffee table about 4-6 inches off the ground- my PSP survived something similar no problem) such that the screen is currently only held in by the left hinge. I superglued it together and it still works, but I'm saving up the money for a new one (and playing the PSP in the meantime, only making an exception for GS4 and Hotel Dusk) because my PSP is also a grey-market import. Unlike the PSP and Sony (one news story stated that Sony didn't want to sell the PSP in China officially because of piracy problems) of Nintendo actually officially sells the DS in China, but in a misguided attempt to curb piracy they also put in firmware restrictions that prevent the iQue DS (Chinese name for the DS Lite) from playing non-Chinese games (while leaving the GBA slot totally open). Obviously for GS4 and Hotel Dusk (and all the other games that I wanted in English or Japanese) that just won't do.

So, the moral of this story is- don't hate on the PSP, the DS has problems too.

I'm of the impression that this is more about 'repair cost' and supposed 'unfair business practice' than whether it deals only with handhelds or not.

I don't want to be unfair, but you maybe right.

Well earlier in the thread someone asked "Doesn't that void the warrenty?" and you said, "Not that they'd know that!" Sorry if I don't understand the mechanics of PSP modding.

Game Cubes may be able to hold together structurally, but my brother's just up and died on him when it was...a little over a year old, I think? I laughed at him 'cause my PS2 lasted almost 6 years (the last two spent held together with tape!). What a trooper.

Of course, that's just my experience with that generation of consoles. Appliances just don't last forever. That doesn't necessarily mean Sony's THE DEVIL OF GAMING.

Ironically, the reason I've taken a disliking to Sony is because of my PS2's internal unreliability (Yes, folks, you've guessed it: The god-forsaken Disc Read Errors)

How long did you have your PS2? I have mine almost 6-7 years and still works like a charm. Never have any problems with it.

By comparison, I've never had a problem with a Sony machine. My launch generation PS2 (picked it up as the first batch, first day) ran fine for 7 years. That's pretty long for a machine like that, considering I would use it for nearly 5-10 hours a day, if not more. I felt no anger towards anyone when it's laser valiantly gave out finally.

My original Playstation never died, actually. I was quite impressed that after seven years it was still running. I was surprised that after I took a fork and repeatedly stabbed the bastard into it's "core" that it still worked.

I've never had a single problem with Sony products either.

How did he do that? Does he modify them by taking them apart? Or does he rough house with them? My cousin, who never takes care of his stuff anyways, broke his PS2 by dropping it constantly.

A closet door fell on my old PS2, which I just remembered. It lasted a good three more years after that, but I'm not sure whether it just died of old age or if the closet door just eventually got to it (dented the frame slightly and maybe the inside).

I should clarify to an extent--my old PS2 works, but it has trouble with 'newer' games since the laser is getting burnt. I COULD fix it but now that I have a PS3 it's not really an issue. The Slim PS2 though is nice, I like it. Really portable, too.

Hmm...there was this one really die-hard nintendo fan at my local EB, but that's about it. I'm kind of imposing, plus I tend to ignore people anyway--especially fanboys. Plus, I don't really run around with the PS3 box taped to my forehead so I only mention it if it's pertinent.

Although I do remember one of the workers there saying I shouldn't spend my money on it and get a Wii instead; I told him if he really thought that I'd be happy to buy it somewhere else. The manager kind of gave him a very sincere death glare, since I spend a lot of money there--I can make their pre-order quota in one visit.

It's only a better value is the system actually does things that you want it to do. At the moment I have zero interest in any of the games for the Wii, since I mostly play JRPGs, FPS, fighting games, and action-adventure. About the only game for the Wii that I felt like playing is SP Mario, but not enough to spend the money on the system for--and I just bought Zelda for the Cube instead of paying 300 dollars for it, so that took out the other 'big title.'

Speaking of 360, it would be nice if something good actually came out for it; I haven't touched it since playing Earth Defense Force (which was very good for a budget title), and I tend to ignore the system for 3 month spurts.

For me, tons of good games have come out for the 360. Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata are coming out soon, and I think they both look excellent, and when it comes to games already out, there are bundles. Ignoring Gears of War and Halo there's Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, Perfect Dark Zero, Rainbow Six Vegas, GRAW (which is okay), Lost Planet (which is also okay, but fun in multiplayer), Table Tennis, Earth Defense Force (<3), Burnout Revenge (although I'm not sure if that was exclusive or not), Dear or Alive 4, and I know there's more, but I can't think of any at the moment. That's not counting all of the stuff out for Live Arcade (like Gemoetry Wars).

You did say you haven't touched it since playing Earth Defense Force, so does that just mean that you've beaten, played, or disliked everything else preceding it? If so, I really envy you. ;;;___;;;

Yes, I have; at least everything that remotely interested me. I have a connection to a certain rental chain and thus my gaming library is technically quadrupled.

Also, PDZ is probably the worst offense to God I have seen in a long time. I'd suggest taking it off your list. Dead Rising is a close second, but some people seem to like it.

As for Burnout, it's not exclusive--and all they really do is make each new copy look better when things go boom.

Live Arcade is a rip-off imo since you can't just PAY for stuff; there are things I would like to buy, and they are supposed to be say 5 dollars, but since you can't actually BUY five dollars worth of stuff, only POINTS that exceed the cost, I've never once bought anything off Live. Don't plan to either. It's ok for getting demos though.
