When I was a kid, the Lost Forest in Zelda: Link to the Past scared the crap outta me. I hated the thief that stalks you through the bushes.

Eternal Darkness was freakishly creepy beyond belief especially if you're playing it alone in the dark.. And the screen jokingly tells you your controller wasn't working while monsters are coming after you.

And watching a couple friends play Manhunt made me jump a few times in my seat.

I will confess, that when Banjo Tooie came out, I was frightened by the Octopuses in Jolly Roger's Lagoon.

Also, I am scared by the fact that Tsunade has not appeared in many Naruto video games as a playable character. And it she doesn't become playable in the Xbox360 game, I shall scream and shoot someone.

When I was 6, I played castlevania on the NES, and it gave me nightmares about zombies coming out randomly and attacking me. I was also scared of my clones that came and attacked me on Back to the Future II and III for the NES.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

It's been a long time since anything scared me, but I'll recall my experiences.

When I was 5, me and my older brother (who was 7) were shopping at Toys R Us with our parents. The decision was made to take home one - and only one - NES game. That game was Shadowgate.

I thought it was cool at first. I loved the music, the perspective...I couldn't read it very well though, so I had trouble playing it myself. So I watched my brother play it.

I must note, however, that back in those days was when my rivalry with my brother was at its peak. He took every opportunity to do things to me. In this case, he would find the banshee in the Castle Shadowgate and intentionally disturb it. The sound it made forced me to run from the room every time.

I took matters into my own hands late that night. I couldn't sleep for whatever reason (though it wasn't Shadowgate), so I quietly made my way into the living room, took Shadowgate from the system, and promptly threw it into the trash. Right on top. I made no effort to hide it, and yet nobody realized that it was in there. I finally came clean about that three years ago by telling my family that I had thrown the game in the garbage.

Most recently, though, I was playing the tech demo of Penumbra (go buy that game! It is AWESOME). I constantly maintain that most horror games on the market don't do a very good job of being scary because the player is provided with sufficient firepower to fend off the monsters, thus negating most of the horror factor. Penumbra, however, arms you with your wits and whatever hazards you can find to block or disable the monsters.

There were two such instances of monsters that actually scared me. The first one presented me with little difficulty because I had previously found a broken power cable and a breaker switch - I lured him into the cable and activated the switch, electrocuting the thing to death.

The second, though, was what really got me. I was walking down a hallway to open a door that I had just found the key for. The power took that moment to die, leaving the room in pitch blackness aside from my glowstick. From behind, I heard bizarre noises - another monster. I did everything I could to get away from it, right down to sliding crates into its way. It just pushed them aside and continued to float towards me. I ran into the room, after hastily fiddling with the key to get it to turn. I slammed the door in its face, blocking it with a crate, which I hoped would stall it long enough for me to find a suitable weapon.

I was just rifling through some desk drawers inside the room when the creature continued its shrieking. I figured I was safe for the time being, but in reality I had mere seconds to live. A crashing noise told me that the door AND the crate had been brushed aside as if nothing was even there. I turned around and barely caught a glimpse of my attacker before it killed me in just a few quick blows.

Meanwhile, I was sitting there with my heart rate through the roof, the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end, and my mouse arm jittering as if I'd consumed three espressos.

I didn't fire up the game again for weeks.

I am still confused how Zelda games can be scary...

Anyways, another game that makes me a littler nervous is Halo 2 when your by yourself fighting Flood infected soldiers and Covenant aliens on Delta Halo when your alone. (At least what I recall...it's been too long.)

As a little kid the redead in LoZ:OoT scared me along with the zombies of RE.

The game that scared me more then any other was REmake, my first RE game that I completed was really freakin scary without a guide, Crimson Heads made me freak the first time I saw one.

RE4 was kinda dissapointing for scary factor (other then OVEN MAN!) I never felt afraid of my foes other then the first encounter with Mr. Salvador (chainsaw man), the game was far too easy to be scary.

Eternal Darkness in the end wins for the sanity meter, that shit fucks with your mind.

Resisdent Evil for the PS1 when I was about 11 I think. The thing about the house being spooky, the cutscenes: one being where you open the main door and three horrible biting dogs try and come in and the zombies just scared me.

But then I shouldn't have been playing the game since it was an 15. :pearl:

The funny thing is, the graphics were shit on the PS1 and it makes me wonder why I was scared of the brightness and crappy quality of the game. XD The Gamecube version was more scarier with better darker, gloomer and scary gameplay!

The other being 'Zombies Ate My Neighboughs'. For a old game, some situations like the axe men chooping threw the bushes and coming to chop you alive or the giant spiders coming out of holes and bitting you! *hides under piller*

At the age of 4:

Crystal's Pony Tale. When that witch would suddenly pop out of nowhere, it scared the SHIT out of me o_o Fo' sho
And King's Quest VII. When you tried to examine something and a giant spider or a scorpion would attack you instead. Hey, it was scary at 4 years old shush >.>

Today though, basically any game where shit pops up out of nowhere and scares you. Games like The Suffering, Silent Hill, etc.
Even just games in general when you don't realize something is following you or jumps up from behind you when you least expect it. And in LoZ I hate the music when you know an enemy is nearby.
Or in LoZ: TP, those damn Poes. I hate the whispering/squeaking sound those floating lanterns make when you get near em.
I have issues... >.>

Wait wait! Are you actually bashing the game that started it all!?

If it weren't for the "shitty" PS1 version, you wouldn't have the "hipper, more graphically advanced" Gamecube version.

Sorry, but I took that comment personally!

I hear ya; that music is very nerve-wracking.

What sacred me alot were the monsters. I hate the shellblades. They were bad in Loz-Majora's Mask, but in TP they're as big as Link and their shells look like jaws *shudder*. Makes me nervous when I hear the crashing sound of one close by. But the monsters I REALLY hate are Like-Likes in the N64 Zelda series! They are creepy! Those giant tubes of flesh bear down on you, engulf you, and eat your shield. I can't will myself to go anywhere near one! Oh... And Black Boes (MM), which kinda look like killer soot balls with red eyes. Cute little buggers, but in the first dungeon, in one corridor my fairy warns me about "being watched", then the light dims out, and suddenly you see little red eyes watching you, and then comes the creepy "enemy" music. You can't imagine how many times I pressed pause, I was so nervous. I haven't encountered any Wall or Floormasters in the N64 series yet but I bet they're creepy.

Another thing that was scary was the scenary of Ocarina of Time, especially Jabu-Jabu's Belly; The inside of the mouth, Villi hanging from the ceiling, Wiggling appendages, and everything in-between.

Other games that made me nervous were first person shooters like 007:GoldenEye, Voyager: Elite Force, and Metroid Prime 1&2; and adventures like Super Mario 64 and Star Fox Adventures.

Sounds like it could be the original Silent Hill, where at one point, Harry falls in a shopping center into a sort of arena with a giant worm. After you smack it around for a bit, you leave, and the whole town is dark and suffering from the nightmare transformation (I think this is the first time it happens to the whole town) and all the monsters are stronger. Eventually, you get to the hospital (of course, the game doesn't tell you to go there, so you're just wandering) and you wind up on the roof of some building, when the worm comes back as an enormous moth with a venomous stinger.

Good times.

Oh god resident evil 2 scared me pretty bad. It was while playing as Leon and your in the police station, when your in these two rooms where one of the rooms is a place where cops stay behind the glass to watch u if your in there getting questioned. where i was in that room and there was nothing so i left and went into the room where the accused people would be getting interrgiated by police. i got the items i needed in the room when suddenly the giant monster thing broke through the glass and yeah. It scared me because i already checked out the other room where nothing was there so it got me by surprise. I yelled "Oh shit" and threw my controller at the ground. I was really freaked...

Especially when you've never played one and can't expect what's coming, the music and total atmosphere of some places can creep up to you. It's not as explicitly made scary as, say, RE, but it can still send some shivers over your back. :yogi:

As embarrassing as it is to admit it...Half Life. The first appearance of the headcrab zombies freaked me out much more than it should have.

Also, the Vazhilok from City of Heroes (you know, the zombie cannibal things) were pretty creepy when I first started playing, but now I'm used to them.

Eternal Darkness

Haha... But seriously, all the crazy shit in that game is so freakin scary it's just awesome. I mean, a "Sanity Meter"? :O

Next comes Clock Tower. I have vague memories of it and am timidily proud of that. Except Scissor Man...

Resident Evil 4 did make my heart pound over and over. But that was when I first encountered a Garrador, a Regenerator, and that one particular oven incident. ..But frankly, I didn't really feel affected by the game's survivor horror-ness until I got on the Remote Island... Then, everything began to freak me out.

Resident Evil remake: (I wasn't gigling like I would through the original game's cutscenes). The music being absent and replaced with thunder when inside the mansion added more tension. (And when the zombies broke through the windows, that made me flinch violently.) Another thing, were the additional mosnters such as that thing that was released from the coffin when you colected all four masks.. And then there's Lisa Trevor... O_o

Resident Evil 0 is my favorite and possibly scared me the absolute most. The music that played when you encounter that deforemed monster...and then later on being trapped in a room with a 12 foot tall Tyrant..

Silent Hill: What scared me on Silent Hill was not the monsters but the relevations of the plot throughout the game. Especially Silent Hill 2.

I practically shit myself in the gamceube remake of Resident Evil 1.

Big reason was probably because the first zombie I unloaded all my ammo, knifed so many times, and it refused to die. This happened 3 times, and then I got to another spot, opened the door to some creepy garden, saw like 4 zombies, ran the F*** out of there, opened the door again and they had walked all the way to the door and waited for me on the other side even after I had left. I didn't think the game did that... because the original ps1 version usually just reset their positions, rather than let them roam closer to the door even after exiting.

Other note worthy "shitting-factor" games include all the silent hills, some of the other resident evils (but nothing had an impact on me like the re gc remake), the giant spider of devil may cry freaked me out the first time I saw it (and the uncountable times that bastard killed me before I could figure out how to kill him...), and I too hated the shadow temple from ocarina of time (when I was a kid, and I still kinda hate it. Its a really creepy place.)

Eternal Darkness was terrifying as well.

Not many do now, but I'm sure I can think of some (just the AD for clock tower scared me). But, for now, here are some from my youth.

1. Mario Tennis- Oh, why did I not go into the living room to eat chinese food with my cousins? Why did I stay and watch the full intro? Why did I scream and cry when Waluigi and Wario showed up? WHY did I tell my idiot cousins who kept replaying it!? BECAUSE of that cutscene, I stayed away from Nintendo until about age 10. And I freaked out about it at age...what? Five? I was too scared to even bring up Pokemon, which I had a burning passion for. I was petrified when we were given their N64, afraid of a relapse when I was 8. I was an easily scared child, because my cousins traumatized me a lot as a toddler with whatever remotely scary thing they could find, whether it be lighters, creepy dolls, horror movies, or pulling plastic bags over my head when I knew it could kill me. I hid all of my Nintendo games, scared that they could bring it up. I didn't buy another pokemon game until a friend of mine helped ease me back into Nintendo. Which is good that she did, because IMO it's the best game company out there. And my brother is now obsessed with Mario. At age 12 I decided to watch the intro again to finally relieve myself of this. And now I'm fine.

2. Diddy Kong Racing- This one didn't affect me as bad as Mario Tennis. I was just scared of Taj the elephant's voice.

3. Donkey Kong- Did I mention I never really liked crocodiles and alligators?
4. Banjo Kazooie- Um...Yeah. This was just..weird. Not as much scary.

But I got over all of these in the end.

I haven't been scared of a game for a looong time(the first time was when I played RE2 when the zombies crashed through the gun shop guy's window and ate him..I was like 13 at the time and played it at night, geez), but I've been kinda putting off finishing Metroid Zero Mission because Metroids are fuckin' SCARY. I mean, the first one I thought was bad, then when I walked into a room full of them, I was just "Okay, screw this, I'm playing Super Princess Peach.."

I think I have PTSD from Silent Hill 2. The Hospital... and the Heritage Society to be specific. At the end I felt like I'd been through hell and back.

When the first RE came out on PS, my brother played it while everyone watched, and unfortunately the image of the first zombie turning his head to see the player seared into my mind so badly I had zombie nightmares up through my childhood. In fact I still have them lol...

And RE4; my cousin actually owned a GC when it first came out and he brought it over and challenged me to play through it. Me being a huge RE fan (he didn't know that Leon was actually in another RE), I was like Hell ya motherfucker, and went through it without much incident (save for the lake monster... I have Ichthyophobia you see...) until I met the Regenerators. After killing the first bastard with much swearing and throwing of Incindiary Grenades, I wandered down the hall and practically bumped into the next one. Everybody screamed and simultaniously flew backwards onto my bed. I happened to pause it in the confusion and we just lied there laughing semi-nervously.

And in Eternal Darkness... when you hallucinate in the Roivas mansion and find Alex's body in the bathtub... :larry:

Oh and the scene from Killer7 where Curtis Blackburn 'executes' Pedro... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXwWjxbzuIk
I warn; it's disturbing.

Majoras mask
Twilight princess

FFVII

All for the same reason..underwater levels with creepy monsters!!

I have a bizarre, inexplicable phobia of underwater monsters. I CANNOT beat any of the afore mentioned by myself because of those. I flat out refuse to go n the water.

Also Galerians. That game is creepy!
Not like other survival horrors that are a freak show with lots of zombies and blood no, but because you play a confused and for the most part defenseless little boy. In most cases all you can do is attempt to run.

Also, I'm currently playing Half-Life 2 and I'm in the level Ravenholm. If you played the game, then I don't need an explanation of the level... *shivers*

Not to mention those little ceiling creatures that try to choke you to death in that same game. They're so CREEPY! =(

EDIT: Oh, yeah! I absolutely hate ANY level that is underwater because of all of the creatures you see down there! Especially that large underwater pit in Majora's Mask. I still have nightmares about those giant eel-things... ;__;

Proof that you don't need super high-resolution graphics to scare a player. In my opinion, its the scariest of the X Days series, though "Trilby's Notes" is a close second. I haven't played a lot of scary games, so I can't say how well this stacks up against others, but it's definitely the scariest game I've ever played.
You can download the games here, if anyone's interested.

As for other games, Ocarina of Time scared me quite a bit too as a kid, and to be honest, some of the enemies (read: Wallmasters) still creep me out.

And yes, underwater areas are scary. You just feel so helpless and out of your element, since in most games you spend most of your time on dry land. You just build up a preference so even when you do get good underwater abilities, you still feel weak in the water. I actually quit playing Majora's mask for a while because I didn't want to fight the sea snakes. Beating them was easy (once I got around to it), but I was on the edge of my seat.

As for RE4, I actually thought the game got less scary as you progressed. Early on, you had weak guns and low health, so dying was a realistic possibility, but by the end, you were so powerful, they had to increase the number and strength of the enemies to the point where the game is reduced to an a third-person shooter. A good third person shooter, to be sure, but it's not scary.

Regenerators are, of course, the exception to this. I unloaded several clips of shotgun ammo and multiple grenades into the first one before it died, and was feeling quite pleased with myself when I left the room and ran headlong into another one. The parts that scared me most were where you can hear one breathing, but you can't see where it is.

Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point...

Oh good, Im not as neurotic as I thought ( or maybe we BOTH are >_> ) the other part about underwater levels that creeps me out (it goes for real life too) is above water nto seeing anything, then diving and SHOCK!! Giant ugly monster right infront of you. *Shudders*

Hehe yea I jumped at everything little thing when I had to take on those damned eels. As for the water temple boss; I wouldnt even touch it. I made my friend do it while I eer..covered my eyes.

I saw videos of that game on YouTube! Too bad it didn't make it to North American shores.

Do they still import it?
