Agreed. Still, at least metallic clones are still pretty rare. At least you could realistically expect a metal version of an adult to be able to drive. The same cannot be said of babies. Then again, I'd probably get fed up with metal clones, too, if they became common enough.

Pierre wrote:
How is that Super Horn meant to work? It seems to just be a sound 'forcefield' around a kart that I'm guessing stuns karts and repels projectiles. I've heard rumours it blocks the blue shell.

It does. All you do is press the "use item" button and it will destroy any hazardous items within range and knock nearby players for a loop for good measure. It can only be used once, though, so it will only do so much against the inevitable quadruple whammy of offensive items so common to higher difficulty levels.

I take it I need to wait for zero hour on the blue shell when it's hovering above my head to stop it?

I'm curious as to whether it would stop a bullet bill as well. The metal clones feel too much of a cop out, it's just existing characters except...heavyweight version and strange voices.

Is anyone else shuffling up their characters to get different stamps? Made me discover I have real trouble with lightweights, makes drifting too easy than I'm used too.

Pretty much. The game allows you some leeway there, so it's not as if you have to have perfect timing. As for the Bullet Bill, I haven't had a chance to test that one. Since Bullet Bills are invincible, it probably wouldn't work. I suspect the same would hold true for Starmen. As for the metal clones, yeah, they're a cop-out--just like the babies. I'm just less annoyed at them because they're not as common yet. I wonder if we'll start seeing Lead Luigi, Bronze Bowser, and Tin Toad in the near future...

That's a little reassuring I was half worried the entire far right column of drivers would just be metal upgrades of existing drivers. Makes me wish some of the less seen Mario characters were given a bit more spotlight at times (lookin at you Daisy and Waluigi).

To be fair, Daisy and Waluigi are pretty much regulars in the multiplayer games these days. Still, I know what you mean. I'd love to see those two in mainstream games more often. I think part of the problem is finding a role suited to their characters. Neither of them seem to fit particularly well into the standard Mario game formula. Daisy's too tough to be a good Peach substitute these days. She could be a protagonist, but that would be a risk I don't think Nintendo's ready to take. As for Waluigi, I have trouble picturing him with an army of minions. He strikes me as more along the lines of a Whiplash-style cartoon villain than a serious threat to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Kind of makes him totally fit in Mario Kart considering how "Wacky Races" it is. Still I think they could pull off a "Wario Bros vs Mario Bros" game.

Also the fact Daisy is so much more interesting than Peach is a good reason for her to have a role. Perhaps another Mario RPG she could be a party member but ah wishful thinking.

I'm having a blast with the game. I'm getting used to the Gamepad, and it's nice to have a map on the bottom screen telling you the positions. Reminds me a lot of Super Mario Kart in that way. Also, I've uploaded a few highlight reels so far. I've only played on 50cc so far so they're not too exciting, but I'm sure that'll change soon enough. I wish you could further edit the highlight reel though, it's nice but it tends not to get my favorite moments half the time.

Also it's just a bit annoying that you have to get the gold in every cup in all the standard difficulties to unlock every racer, and what you unlock is random each time. I hope the Mii isn't saved for last, too...

Pierre wrote:

Oh? I was under the impression that you could generate some kind of code for your tournament for people to join that way. I might be mistaken. Either way, we still need time to practice and learn the courses, anyway.

As far as I know, the non-Nintendo characters created for the original Super Mario RPG are owned by Square-Enix, hence why they haven't been used in any games since then. As for the other RPG games, Nintendo likes to treat them kind of like a separate continuity to the main games, so they keep the characters separated. A bit unfortunate, but it's how they've always done things.

As for Pink Gold Peach, I don't mind too much. I always kind of wondered if Metal Mario is from some alternate universe where everything is made of metal (because let's face it, if we can have time travelling babies, are alternate dimensions really so far off?), and if he had a matching set of characters, so PGP fits that. Now all we need is Chrome Luigi, Bronze Toad and Mecha Bowser.

The main issue with Waluigi has more to do with the fact that he was created by Camelot for Mario Tennis. While Nintendo does own the character, they pretty much just treat him as a partner for Wario in the sports titles and not much more than a seat filler in the other spinoff games; he's never been in a mainline Mario game. Hell, he's never even been in the WarioWare games, either. To them he's just filler. Fun to use and play around with, but not much more than that, I'm afraid.

Really? That's a bit of a shame, I didn't expect anyone from the original Super Mario RPG but the more recent ones I had hoped for. Didn't assume they were an alternate continuity, more they just fleshed out the world a bit. I swear the second they crossover those worlds a little (like having Fawful in a 'Galaxy' game or something) they'd sell a bunch.

I've been loving this game so far! I've done all the 100cc cups and a few 150cc ones. And yeah the characters are completely random, I've already unlocked the Mii and Rosalina but I'm missing a few Koopa Kids.
Gotta say though, I'm not looking forward to my inevitable trying to get 3 stars on every cup run given the new changes in items.

I unlocked my Mii, so I've got my character of choice.

Image

Now I just need a vehicle setup that I can work with and all will be good. Coin grinding, here I come.

I also managed to capture this, the moment of impact of a blue shell.

Image

Is Mario too afraid to look, or accepting his fate? Only he knows...

The angle it's taken from makes it look a bit like Mario is riding the shell.

How do you take screenshots of the game like that? Just Miiverse it?

I've noticed something weird with Mario kart 8.
Some of the music sounds similar to songs from other franchises.
Part of the ghost levels song sounds like a song from Nightmare before christmas and i swear part of Rainbow road sounds like the moon from Ducktales.

Miiverse is the easiest way. Alternatively you can go to pretty much any image upload site on the internet browser and upload whatever's currently on the screen as an image that way.

You can do that? I'm going to try this out! So the Wii U basically screenshots what's on your screen when you hit the home button? (I thought you could only post screens via Miiverse, unless you had a capture card.)

Anyway, I've been having a blast with this game so far, and am loving the new power-ups, especially the Piranha Plant (much to the chagrin of my brother).

Well everyone is new and they've not figured out how to screw the game yet like the stupid Wuhu Mountain Loop glitch from MK7.

Outta curiosity how many folks liked those loop tracks from MK7? I really quite liked them and I'm glad they reworked the Rainbow Road into one.

Man those tracks were the one thing i loved from 7, glad Mount wario and Rainbow road were awesome. I wish the WiiU rainbow road was likethat too.

For some reason the Wii U version of rainbow road reminds me of the racing episode of Space dandy.

I just noticed something: the localization teams didn't bother to change the traffic directions in Toad's Turnpike. To an American player (and players from a large number of other countries I won't bother to list), it would appear that the vehicles are all driving on the wrong side of the road.

I've got to say, this game is amazing. I've really been enjoying it a lot and I can't really find a course I don't seem to care for. To me, they're all really great. It's easy to see Nintendo went all out with this one. What I really like too is that they offer a 4-player Grand Prix option, which is a first and I'd love to see more of. (Technically Double Dash kinda had it if you had 2 people to a kart.) Only complaint on that is that it's hard to get a star ranking when multiple people are playing, but meh, I play for fun. Add to the fact that things are much simpler to unlock and it really ups the level in multiplayer.

Coming off of 7, this game seems so much better. While 7 had great tracks and fun ideas, the AI was the absolute worst to me. Consistent item spamming on even the 50cc made a potentially enjoyable game terrible for me. MK8 seems to have fixed this, at least to me. It feels much more better balanced as far as the items go, and even if I get item spammed, I feel like I have a better chance to pull back out into first overtime as opposed to 7.

I'm going to be busy the rest of this week preparing for a convention this weekend, but when I get back, I'd love to get to race against whoever I can on here. Granted, I won't be the best, but I'd love to play against you guys for fun! I'm curious, but are we going to do a racing community like thing on here so we can race each other? I assume that's part of the purpose of this thread. I think it'll be a lot of fun.

@Luigi: It's been like that in other MK games too. The ones that I remember from the DS and Wii had traffic on the "wrong" sides of the road from an American standpoint.

Got five more highlight reels uploaded from the last couple of days. I've decided to do at least one from each track, so I still have a while to go.

This is probably why Mount Wario is one of my favorite tracks in this game. I really wish we had more than just a couple.

It's because instead of just being a winding road floating around in space (or very high in the air in some games), they based it around a physical location. I rather like that change, though. Theme-wise, there's just something about racing around the base of operations for the in-universe Mario Kart TV that really ties the game together for me. It's as if the racers are personally thanking them for broadcasting all of their races by racing around their broadcasting space station.

Ah so thats what it is?

By this point I'm pretty sure Mario Kart is just set in the 'real world' of Mario where everyone is a freaking rich celebrity and they have decked out their places so extravagantly with all the money they made off their games that they don't even care anymore.

So, if that's the case...

Mario and Luigi spend it on making raceways
Bowser and Peach spruce up their places so others can race
Toad purchases highways and towns, which already have roads
Daisy gets a cruise-liner and decks it out along with any vacation spot available
Wario builds racing tracks in colosseums
DK renovates his jungle
Yoshi carves racetracks from natural terrain

and Waluigi builds a racetrack within a giant pinball machine

Clearly, Waluigi is the best investor of them all.

Urgh I don't know how people play light characters you just don't have the speed to cut it.

I just spent the last grand prix racing competently yet I'd still end up in second or third without any real major accidents or losses I just couldn't keep up with them.

Also during the end credits I noticed THIS

Seems that certain Mario characters own big businesses that sponsor the Mario Kart industry.

Of course Bowser has oil so I figure he's pretty much achieved legal 'world domination' in 'real world' Mario.

Yeah I noticed there'd been little billboards and the like throughout the other games I just thought it was neat how they were included in the credits as if they'd funded the game.

Also during the end credits I noticed THIS

Seems that certain Mario characters own big businesses that sponsor the Mario Kart industry.

Well, considering all the places Mario Kart has taken place, it's not a stretch to consider Bowser's oil monopoly is probably what keeps him in such extravagant castles and the like. All those factories, the cars on the highways, the giant clock, the airport, etc, they all need oil to run. Considering how overly natural of a setting the main games have, I'm honestly surprised at how modernized the world is in comparison to Mario's platforming adventures.

When racing for the heck of it? Luigi. When trying to get three stars? Rosalina.

I've gravitated towards using Rosalina for fun. Seeing as I really haven't tried to go hardcore in 3 starring cups considering all I've done is multiplayer with them, I've yet to see if Rosalina is a good fit for doing that or not. She's amazing in multiplayer though, I'm just still trying to find the right set up for her. That said though, I miss Funky Kong from the Wii. He was my boy.

What's special about Rosalina? She's just a middleweight right? Or did they bring back the slight personal differences between characters?

Also wonder why Luigi was chosen for that meme.

Strictly speaking, every character shares his/her stats with at least one other character. Rosalina is actually in one of the heavyweight groups, putting her in the same class as Roy, Donkey Kong, and Waluigi. These four have great speed, and with the right kart, can still manage some good handling, too. The same holds true for the metal couple, though they trade acceleration and traction for weight.

So are Lightweight karts always going to lose out in the end? Since a heavyweight can offset it's weaknesses with enough skill but a lightweight will never be able to go fast?

Also that's a bizarre category for her, I wouldn't say her nor Waluigi look especially 'heavy'.
