Resident Evil 5 is kind of all sorts of mediocre

I haven't been so pissed off for paying full price for a game in ages

It controls like shit too for the kinds of things it expects you to do. They may as well have just given it generic third-person shooter controls.

I forgot that I'm just a TROLL well shit I guess that means everybody can go back to enjoying RE5, I mean I sure am ruining your fun by not liking it

I'm just not really having fun with it. I kind of keep wanting to play, thinking "maybe it's just because I'm not used to it yet" but the more I think about it, the more I realize it's not worth getting used to. I sort of feel as if they tried to make an all-out action third-person shooter like the typical ones on market, but felt obligated to keep the control scheme. The camera also bugs the hell out of me, as if I'm playing like a horse with blinders.

It feels incredibly claustrophobic and not in some "it's heightening the fear" kind of way.

The addition of Sheva is really frustrating in single-player mode and I don't have any friends to play co-op with, so that's out the window. Her AI is horribly inept.

I wouldn't exactly say that. Co-op is new. Real time inventory is new. It just seems the same because it was such a massive leap between the older games and Resident Evil 4, in terms of gameplay and story. I personally think there's more of a difference between Resi 4 and 5, than there is to say, Resident Evil 2 and 3.

I don't want to play the "you're doing it wrong" card on you, but most of the people I've seen complain about Sheva's AI are not using her effectively. You have to remember to switch her between Attack and Cover depending on just what you want her to do. Like in Yahtzee's review he complained about her using her handgun instead of her machine gun on the boss but she'll always switch to her strongest weapon when you tell her to attack.

Give her a semi-powered rifle and she's a near perfect shot. I've been playing as Sheva lately and gave AI Chris my M3 - now I have to keep him on Cover or he'll steal all my kills. Sure the AI gets kind of bone head when it comes to jumping in the way of a deadly laser (and I hear it's a super pain if you're trying for Professional), but it's by far not the worst I've suffered through a game.

Oh, so I have to manage Sheva even more? I already have to toggle my real-time inventory so that just sort of makes it even more annoying, even if it's a simple option. I kind of just hate her presence altogether, but since they made the game with co-op intentions there's nothing to do about that until I can rope somebody into playing with me.

Code Veronica is AWESOME!!!! And Chris > Leon.

Wesker is clearly the best, though. Ever since "Hey...don't open...thatdoorrrrrr!" Bahahahaha. I love the major logic fail in RE1.

Why not go outside and battle ~10 zombie dogs rather than trying to manouver through a zombie-infested mansion?

And on the RE5 topic... we would all be moaning like hell if Capcom tried to rewrite the series again. 4 ruled. I wanted more of the same.

"Is that you, Rebecca?"

I've played a few sessions of 5 round my friend's co-op. I don't really mind the whole "it's RE4 in Africa". I'm just weird like that.

Though I tend to be all "OH MY GOD, THAT'S GUY GOT A CHAINSAW, GET INTO THAT HOUSE" and my mate's just all "...Just RIFLE HIM." XD

But Chris came first... :yogi:

When you make a sequel to a game typically the controls/gameplay are going to be similar to what came first. 4 was a complete upgrade - did you really expect that after making what plenty of the press called "Game of the Year" they were going to reinvent it again right after? What is SO WRONG with two games that share similarities?

And besides, it's not like it's the same. Chris is a very different character than Leon. They changed it from an escort mission to co-op, they changed the inventory system, you have a larger selection of weapons (including some neat extras) and can add infinite ammo to almost any of them. I'm not a fan of the cover system but that's another thing that's new. It is not *just* "4 in Africa."

well i would prefer something different than las plagas, at the very least
i don't know, the whole "you're going into a foreign country where the villagers are crazy and want to kill you oh and then their heads explode into monsters" being the plot again just sort of ruins it for me, like, couldn't they have come up with a different setting or at least different enemies? i dunno

and honestly the controls being similar doesn't bother me in the least, i really liked 4's controls and i'm glad to see them returning

on a related note should i get re5 for 360 or ps3, i'm thinking ps3 because then i don't have to pay to play online

It's more or less the same control scheme, but the game is far more action-centric than before.

@ Gozu, stop it. Forcing your opinions and telling everyone LOUDLY your hate isn't helping you at all. You are very very lucky that CR isn't warning OR banning you for your remarks. In other forums, you would have been laughed at and kicked out of the forum.

Anyway, the issue is that too many people can't think tactically with two people. I've played RE5 with both the AI and with friends and I haven't had any issues. I suppose it's that thinking mentality that's putting everyone off. Most people I've talked to hate it due to the AI issues and also the fire or run tactic. Basically, 'what is the point of shooting or running...' is the common question and I have to say Gears of War and other games probably influenced that running whilst shooting issue but that's not the genre here (sort of given the shooting and action parts)...

HAHAHA OH WOW are you serious

first off friend, let me tell you why i said that since neither of you bothered to ask - i got pretty severe motion sickness from playing just the demo levels, and after i was done playing through them i was nauseous for a good long while. why is that? because the camera is jerky as hell, and it's apparently necessary for it to be moving around extremely quickly all the time to show how action-packed sheva jumping over a gap is.

capcom put a huge emphasis on the action in this game, and to me it really just detracts from it.

also, managing your weapons in real-time as well as managing sheva seems to be the biggest piece of bullshit that i've ever come across. the real-time inventory keeps fighting hectic, yes, which is what i'm sure that they were going for, but what that ended up doing is making the fights really fast, and that wound up putting me off.

overall the changes to the pacing of the game and the real-time inventory management is just weird and puts way too much emphasis on KILL ALL THE BROWN PEOPLE than i'm comfortable with. plus i get headaches and nausea from the fucking camera, so i am not feeling this game

Motion sickness from the camera? I haven't heard that complaint for RE5 before. You can control the camera manually so what's the problem?

Sheva only has two modes to switch between. Is it really THAT difficult for you to manage her? Just keep her on cover until you run into a mob and need the extra gun power. The real time inventory takes a little while to get used to but all you really need is to put two guns and two healing items on your D-pad. The enemy encounters are spaced out so that you have time to shuffle in between if you need to. I find it a hell of a lot more fun than having to pause every time I want to change weapons.

Everyone's entitled to like or dislike whatever game, but in RE5's case I hear a whole lot of "I'm no good at this game, therefore it sucks." You wouldn't have to turn and run and turn back and fire and turn and run back and turn and fire if you could AIM.

The sheer amount of little things that ruin this game for me are far too much to just be "I suck at it, therefore it sucks"

I can aim, sure. It's not making it any better. Even when Sheva (who is still a hassle no matter what I'm doing for her) is being controlled by a friend, there was a lot of issues that still persisted. By the time I beat the game my opinion hadn't changed.

google "resident evil 5 motion sickness"
and controlling the camera doesn't matter; it's too jerky all the same. i make chris start running and hey look at that the camera has to zoom out behind him and then settle in a little closer but is still moving around for some reason. i make chris aim and WOAH the camera has to zoom in really fucking quickly and jerkily instead of being a nice smooth transition. there's an explosion and WOW the camera has to shake really violently all the fuck around. these things give me some pretty bad motion sickness, personally, and i've gotten it in the past from half-life 2.

then we're different, because i fucking loved the attaché system, and i liked how the action in re4 was fast-paced but not too much so. i feel like re5 takes it to a level that's unnecessary; the WHAM BAM WOW LOOK OVER THERE SHOOT OKAY SHOOT THE OTHER GUY WOAH BETTER HEAL YOURSELF DAMN CHECK OUT THIS EXPLOSION is too much and, personally, overwhelms me. i don't know, maybe i just don't enjoy fast paced games; but i feel this way about a lot of games this generation. too much emphasis on all the action that's going on.

and i didn't know that you could map items to the d-pad - that seems a lot more convenient than having to keep opening up the inventory

i'm not going to touch your thing about sheva because i haven't played the game enough to judge her ai

Well the aiming thing was more of a general "you" because that's what I hear the most complaints about: reviews blaming the AI or the controls for getting slaughtered, but if you choose a good position and have careful aim there's hardly any normal baddie in the game that's a real threat, even the Reapers. Even in Yatzhee's review he blamed the game for Sheva using the wrong gun against bosses, when he clearly didn't have the first clue how her AI is actually set up.

I'm sorry that the camera gives you motion sickness, though I was playing RE4 not long before I started on 5 and other than the explosions I don't remember noticing too much of a difference. I had a lot harder time with the Madworld camera since you can't control it hardly at all. But then, I've never suffered motion sickness from a game or movie so I wouldn't know how bad it has to be for it to be a problem.

Anyway, story time for the peeps enjoying the game: yesterday I was playing my first run on Vet with the infinite ammo turned on, and some guy joined my game in 1-2 with his mic. Mine was across the room so I didn't feel like getting it, and just listened to his little comments while we played. When we got to the first Uroboros I wanted to keep our clear time down so I ignored the oven and just slaughtered it with my magnum, and he goes, "....Wow." I felt like a badass <3

But then later I felt a little bad because I was getting all S's and he kept getting C's for kills because I was stealing them all. In one level I had 92 to his 19. Sorry dude :U

and it's really rad (~=v=)~ there are a couple things that i dislike about it (particularly the new shop system) but on the whole it's pretty fun, and surprisingly difficult compared to re4. i hate sheva's ai though; when i have her on cover she literally does nothing and then when i put her on attack she goes out and dies, wat <_> idgi
