blackjack you are wrong

you take on the role of a main character, go through the game building alliances and progressing the story, controlling your characters and defeating enemies while levelling up and gaining new abilities etc etc

i don't see how someone could possibly argue that it isn't an rpg

I was really only arguing against this idiotic perception that turn-based systems, experience points, and inventories are the primary qualifications of a Role-Playing Game. That would be like a game where you design cars, train drivers, and and coach the driver's through a race being called a racing game.

I did make the mistake of trying to prove that Fire Emblem, individually, was not an RPG. It was the whole RPG system that I protesting against, originally.

Fine now that you've admitted you are wrong about Fire Emblem....I wanna hear what your conception of an RPG is.

I'd say levelling up, detailed inventories, characters and storyline pretty much define RPG's for me. Sure non-rpg's can have good storylines I just find some of the best come from RPG's.

But curse you BlackJack with your respect loss and guilt trips it's not all like that, the 'Lord' himself who he bonds with can be seen as roleplay.
Furthermore your giving me the impression you think RPG's can only be done from the ONE MAIN CHARACTER's perspective acting out their life.
I did a good portion of Chrono Trigger (a definative RPG) without the main character Crono! It's a game that can be completed without it.
My favourite parts of FF7 were the parts without Cloud in the party!
FF9 frequently changed the perspective letting other characters be controlled.
The fact you can control other characters and bond them in FE is nothing unusual about an RPG!

If anything I'm surprised in YOUR opinion that only the main character's story should be told and controlled when RPG's everywhere are filled with multiple perspectives. :grey:

Role-Playing - The modifying of a person's behavior to accord with a desired personal image, as to impress others or conform to a particular environment.

A game where you role-play would be an RPG. I will consent that Fire Emblem and whatever else is an RPG in the traditional sense.

But, a true-to-definition role-playing game would be something like Oblivion. Sure, it's not a perfect example, but it is, to my knowledge, the closest that gaming has ever gotten to true role-playing. You create from scratch your own uber-modified character, choose it's name, and right from the get-go make it's every decision.

My original point was that RPGs in their traditional form weren't really role-playing games. As the role-playing is downplayed to put emphasis on the fetch quests, the experience-gathering/level building, the combat, and otherwise.

Think about games like Harvest Moon. Now that I think about it, that is another good example of a real RPG. At least the newer ones, anyway. They focus on other things, like relationships with NPCs, responsibility, and stewardship. And while I agree that this may not be an ideal game theory, Harvest Moon has apparently made it work. All without combat.

I once read an article about this subject. That Role-Playing games actually have very little to do with Role-Playing.

That was my point. And I then made the mistake of letting it devolve into an argument of "Is this game really an RPG?"
That was foolish. I was killing my own point.

And for that I apologize.

Sounds like you should check out Persona 4 or 3 lotsa non-combat non-leveling up life sim stuff.

Still Harvest Moon is very good for a while.

But Role Playing and Role Playing games are both very different I can accept that. I think I get where your coming from. I'd say RPG's are a different entity from RPs I wouldn't consider them one and the same since one is a game it can combine elements from other genres be it life sims like Persona and Harvest Moon or tactics and strategy like FFT or Fire Emblem.

Does this mean Sims is a good example of an RPG? :yuusaku:

Yes, lol.

And just to clarify, I get your point of saying RPs and RPGs are different in context.
But it should be pointed out that that sort of identification is exactly what I'm talking about.

That is an RP is a game, than it should, by definition, be an RPG, right? That's logic.

But instead, we are usually given a tactics game and it's called a "Role-Playing Game".
I mean, in most RPGs, the tactics of how you customize your various soldiers, friends, and assorted help to most efficiently defeat your enemy is the key component of the gameplay.

No one would call NFL Blitz a fighting game, even though the combat and violence is often just as brutal. It is a sports game because, at its core, the game is about Football.

The same theory should apply to RPGs.

In short, my point is that I don't understand why the games we know as "Role-Playing Games" are called "Role-Playing Games", when "Tactics Games" or "Strategy Games" or even "Strategic Fighting Games" are more a more accurate term. I think it's false advertising.

Is the SNES super Mario the one about the Seven Stars?

BlackJack you say roleplaying should be about playing through the character's life ya? The other genres, be it tactics, sports, battling or other types are just a consequence of that life. to kill

Place someone in a war-torn land give them weaponry and troops don't be surprised if their role is to fight throughout the country.

Point is the other genres are a consequence of the roles they have to play. Put someone in a normal life sure it may turn out like the sims, put them in a farm community sure it may work out like harvest moon.

But throw in monsters and stuff and you may get something like Final Fantasy.

they're not called that because the name goes back to tabletop rpgs, where the main focus of the game was on character creation and customisation. in most jrpgs, you took on the role of a nameless warrior or warriors, like the first ff, and you 'role-played' as these characters whose professions you chose and who you customised. battling was, of course, part of it, but so was exploration, quests, and finding treasure, just like their tabletop counterparts.

as rpgs as a video game genre grew and changed, jrpgs sort of came into themselves; that is, they stopped taking so many cues from western rpgs and tabletop games and, instead, made their own types of games, like tactics rpgs, rpgs that focused almost entirely on the story instead of quests and the like, and rpgs in which you had very strong characterisation where you were playing as someone instead of a nameless fighter, for examples.

the term "rpg" has come to mean something in its own right when it comes to video games, rather than just straight role-playing. they are still mainly about role-playing, but they're very different than what they used to be in that they refer to a greater deal of games with wider variety than just games in which you don a suit of armor, take a sword and embark on an adventure. there is so much more in the genre today than there ever was before.

and that is why they are not referred to by your ridiculous "strategic fighting games".

Things evolve, generally. Just like the FPS has changed from Wolfenstein to what we have now and RTS too etc so on and more waffle. OF course this does breed a certain vagueness in terms and unless games turn into what music is now with a ridiculous number of sub-genres and sub-sub-genres which are different to various degrees yet the same at the core then we will have to live with the idea that genres are loose in their interpretation and I feel will become even more loose in the future with hybrids, interbreeding and gingerbread love children flowing out of the womb that is the game industry.

I am not going to attempt to improve on Gozu's statement, I endorse it even.

I am starting to feel like I die every time I end up agreeing with someone, for shame.
