Sacred Stones is one of the best.

Twilight Princess, anyone?

Ahhh... Joshua... I loved him....

I used Joshua, Ross, Ewan, Amelia, Franz, Cormag, and Ephraim.

No. Role-Playing and Zelda are just things I can't find enough similiarities too to be considered the same. My opinion.

I liked Valkyrie Profile, Persona series, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. My guilty pleasure would have to be Legend of Dragoon, terrible voice acting but I liked it.

Final Fantasy 6 for some reason holds a special place in my heart.

For some reason I have more than one copy of Radiata Stories, so damn easy but fun.

Though all of the above lacked true RPGness I think, console RPGs sure. Does Harvest Moon count? haha.

Am sure I am missing things but that is what edit is for.

Fragmented again.

Zelda is not an RPG, the traits of an RPG it's missing are:

A comprehensive inventory (sort of has this, but not to an RPG level).

Various shops selling progressivley better items and armor.

A fairly complex equipment system (not a nessecity to be an RPG, but ludicrously common)

Skill System, the big one, this is probably one of the huge defining points of most RPGs, and Zelda doesn't have one.

Zelda is an Action-Adventure, not a bad series at all, but not an RPG

What`s a comprehensive inventory? What about the masks? The weapons? Potions? General crap?

And, there are various shops, and you can get better things as the game goes on (better potions, shields, armor).

Is a skill system levels and stuff? In Twilight Princess you could learn new moves and stuff as the game went on...

But I accept your point. Zelda is action-adventure, then.

Advance wars is good but I wouldn't put it as an RPG, just a strategy war-game with usually a good story. I'm currently still finishing Days of Ruin....I'm at the last fight but....the odds are stacked so high against me it'd just take a massive injection of Willpower :will: for me to manage to attempt it, even then I'd probably get beat.

But I'd like to add a new favourite to my list:

Legend of Dragoon, not finished it yet but so far in my opinion it's better than FFVII in certain bits.

assuming you're 14 like someone mentioned, that means that you

-did not exist when lttp came out
-were 2 years old when oot came out
-were 5 when mm came out, which is old enough to play the game or see it, but not old enough to understand it

you would not quite understand how incredible oot was when it first came out, which means that you do not understand how zelda defined action-rpg

just sayin

I'm going to put Shining Force II up on here.

Also, I actually agree with Gozu's statement about Zelda as well. I'd put Zelda as an action/rpg. I mean, you get upgrades, you gain health. Granted it's not all statistics, but that's pretty much the basis of an RPG. I'd hate to try fighting the final boss with a wooden sword and 3 hearts. :/

Oh gee, I hate this but I may just understand part of the point, some games redefine genres or just rip a new hole in one and make it their own, which can not truly be understood or appreciated unless you played the game as it did this feat, other wise after many years it has become the standard and lost it's impact. I'm leaving that there before I ramble but going to add the word 'context' for the hell of it.

Of course, I never liked Zelda as a game but remember watching my cousin play one on the Snes but I got my ass raped when I tried, maybe is why I dislike it poor childhood trauma.

Nah uh Fire Emblem has a deep equipment and item element, individual characters with backstory who ARE NOT EXPENDABLE! They level up and evolve.

Levelling up has only been introduced in the latest advance wars and no evolution or stats, you produce lots of highly expendable units don't equip them.

It's no RPG I'm afraid BlackJack

Why is it that RPG (Role-Playing Game) is defined by leveling up? Fire Emblem, in retrospect, is not, and never has been, an RPG. You don't take on the role of anyone, you don't make any decisions. The only time you ever had a choice was in SS when you had to choose between Ephraim and Eirika. Not a Role-Playing choice.

Games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion are closer to true Role-Playing Games. I would say WoW, but who actually does any role-playing in that game?

You assumably take on the role of the main character (Eirika, Ike, Marth etc) and the movements of all the other characters reflects them following your command standard procedure is for new units to follow your command this is even made a point when some units with higher military experience will subject themselves to your authority. Since the game ends when you (the commander) is beaten it can been seen as you taking on the role of that character.

Also you can make decisions of who to bond which character to another, creating a strong fighting team and possibly affecting the ending.

Plus you can choose what they evolve into in some of the games.

Class changing or evolving and levelling up are like....staples in RPGs, the former aren't neccessary but...I'd still consider them kinda a sign of an RPG.

I take back the "And Never Has Been" comment. In FS, you take on the role of an unnamed tactition. But your "role-playing" is limited to TBS-style gameplay. You never make any "role-playing" decisions.

The game ends when the Lord dies because he is the only really invaluable character. This rule applies in all strategy games. Even chess.

Choosing "who to bond" is not RP-ing. I'm a little surprised, not to mention disappointed, that we are having to discuss this point. Even assuming you are playing in the role of the the game's resident Lord, it's not like Eliwood is going to say "Lyn, Hector, you two stay close together. Strike up a conversation, and bond. This will help you fight better and gives the game's story some fleshing out." I lost a good bit of respect for your opinion when you brought this point up.

Class-changing is a staple of both RPGs and TBSGs. In Fire Emblem's case, it would appear to be closer to the latter, as, with the exception of the lords (and the thief/assassin in PoR), the class change has no change on their personalities, and only minor change in abilities (other than the obvious stat boost). The only exception to this rule is in SS. The classes have several additional abilities (my favorite being the Bishop's Holy ability).

blackjack you are wrong

you take on the role of a main character, go through the game building alliances and progressing the story, getting items, controlling your characters and defeating enemies while levelling up and gaining new abilities etc etc

i don't see how someone could possibly argue that it isn't an rpg

I was really only arguing against this idiotic perception that turn-based systems, experience points, and inventories are the primary qualifications of a Role-Playing Game. That would be like a game where you design cars, train drivers, and and coach the driver's through a race being called a racing game.

I did make the mistake of trying to prove that Fire Emblem, individually, was not an RPG. It was the whole RPG system that I protesting against, originally.

uh yeah i would call that a racing game, maybe a racing sim game or something, but still a racing game

and okay, fair enough, those aren't the main qualities an rpg needs to possess to be an rpg

but advance wars still isn't an rpg while fire emblem is
