I know we have to have some Warcraft fans here. Of the RTS, if not the MMO.

<3 the Orcs. Orcs kick ass!

Never played the RTS, but I <3 WoW. I got it a few days ago and I can't stop playing.
I have a level 8 human warlock (Akiora) and a level 5 or 6 (forgot exact level) troll shaman (Okirion).
I play on the Steamwheedle Cartel server.

Ha, my brother tried to get me into it. I was an alliance paladin, got to about level 21 before I quit. Right now he's a lv 70 alliance mage with a flying mount.
That game requires way to much time! I found I was playing till 5am and my schedule was so messed up XD I had to stop for my own health. It's a deadly addictive game.

Whenever I hear 'World Of Warcraft', I can always imagine some kid playing at 3AM.

World of Warcrack...

EDIT: Australian current affairs program (A Current Affair) report on the game, namely one kid.

I used to play on the steamweedle cartel server. Have a level 59 human warrior. It just takes too much time for me. And with the burning crusade it just made it worse...I was so close to hitting the level cap...then the BC came out...that killed it for me.

I play with a few online friends from time to time on the Feathermoon server. I was more of a City of person, myself, but when they decided to screw over everybody who had a somewhat low-end computer, I decided to go look for online gaming elsewhere.

I had a trial account and a character on Earthen Ring, I believe it was.

City of Heroes spoiled me. I liked a lot of WoW's features, but I simply, absolutely, could not stand the travel time. (Yes, I know other MMOGs like FFXI are worse.) I've been told that this is because I took a quest in the Barrens, but I'm soured towards the experience already.

I can't justify paying for more than one MMOG at a time. I'll probably switch over if WoW ever introduces some quick, easy, and cheap way to travel quickly over large distances. From what I understand of the game engine, though, this is unlikely.

As for the RTS games, I've played the first and third (with the expansion). I sucked at them, predictably, but I like the story of the world.

You mean, uh, like flight paths? >.>

And it's supposed to be a big damn world. Letting you travel places that easily would just make it feel small, honestly. But yeah, Barrens = ouch. Especially before they added the Ratchet and Camp T flight paths. That was just pain incarnate.

Or you could roll a Mage for teleporting :P

He means like Super Speed/Flying/Super Jump like in CoX.

Of course, when you travel at the speed of a slug 'cause the game won't go over 3 FPS if there's a few PCs on the screen... it doesn't help. CoX is very fun, except that eventually, you end up doing the same story arcs over and over again, and it's VERY resource heavy.

And the Flight Paths, I've found, aren't all that great. "So, I wanna go there... but instead of, you know, going there directly, I have to go through the Crossroads? Screw that!"

I played Wow for about a month, and while at first it seemed fun, at the end I didn't end up caring much for it. It was a good game, and the theme of the world and the classes are very nicely done, but I didn't like the overly-snobby community. The focus on having the best equipment ever drove me away, too, since it seemed to turn many people into elitists. I don't know if things are any different now, though.

Of course, since I've been playing City of Heroes (and at that, Villains) since launch, I guess I went into trying WoW kind-of spoiled from CoX's rather nice community.

Its a pretty solid mmorpg, i play 2 main ones (WoW and FF11, one at a time of course not both) and for ppl with not as much time its a great game. I feel sad when i hear about these news reports given it and other mmorpgs a bad name, its not a huge amount of people who have this addictive "illness".

Been part of that community on and off. Very hypocritical. Especially a few months ago, with all the community changes. "We have such a great community if you're on the forums 24/7. Otherwise, who the hell are you, noob?"

I've played Warcraft III: RoC, TFT, WoW and an extremely small amount of Warcraft I and II. I don't play WoW anymore ever since I got my paladin epic mount. The thing I hate most is when people judge the Warcraft series solely based on WoW, since most of them are too ignorant to realize that there are other Warcraft games out there too.

Personally, I tend to judge the series based on the original game (Orcs and Humans), but I understand that it's just as unfair. I'm not sure whether WC2 or WC3 is the better representative of the Warcraft universe, or if the entire thing is moot.

In any case, as mentioned, I'd like a way to travel quickly and easily through WoW, and the flight paths don't cut it, since they're still too slow (and require me to pay for every time I want to ride). As mentioned, I've been spoiled with CoH, where I don't have to worry about forgetting to do something while I'm at a certain location (this is even more pronounced in FFXI), since I can get there easily enough. To trade this off, though, I get tired of the constant loading screens in CoH, as opposed to WoW's seamless world.

And it's really a tradeoff. From what I understand, the reason WoW can have seamless loading is because the travel speed is capped to a certain amount, and the game doesn't need to render everything all at once at high speeds. Even in CoH, there's also a travel speed cap (although it's much higher), because any faster and the game can't keep up. As it is, and as Hatman says, those with slower systems get lagged horribly, especially with the upgrades since Issue 6. (I've complained about it myself on the forums a few times.)

Overall, it's simply that the balance of "like" and "dislike" of CoH is such that I'm going to keep subscribing until that balance gets changed towards "dislike". And the balance of WoW is such that I have no incentive to subscribe to it. In other words, it's a matter of current taste. Both games have things that are good, and both games have things that are bad, and what is good for one may be bad for another.

One thing I am worried about regarding WoW is whether the devs are working based on a relatively fixed story bible, or if they're going to retcon certain story points from before (like they technically did to the first game). I'd like to see some sort of resolution to at least the current Arthas story, rather than endlessly adding more raid dungeons with "oh, here's another ancient evil from days long forgotten". (And yes, I've also complained as much about the CoH storylines.)

Oh Warcraft....

I never bothered with the MMO, I'm not really much for those sorts of things. But I did love the RTS to bits. Gotta be one of my top 3 RTS faves, right up there with starcraft and Command and Conquer.

Never, EVER, used cheats. To me, it ruins the game. My friend would cheat all the time. We would play online, and I would get a random message, and I'd be like "What?" and he'd say, "Oh, sorry, forgot I can't cheat." XD

Ah well. Still loved the games.

Pretty much. I'm going with "Blizzard retcons more than DC comics ever did." theory, personally.

And yeah, at points, even the CoX stories are... bland when it comes to ancient evils. Banished Pantheon? Uh, who? Circle of Thorns? Angsty magicians from thousand years back. Rikti? Not that evil when you think about it. They got a lot of evil/good groups that are in desperate need of story arcs/TFs/SFs, but they do nothing with them (*coughLudditescough*)

Oh, definitely. There's a huge thread on the official CoH forums right now about how so many groups are brushed off once you outlevel them, and are never heard from again. Or even the weird level placements of certain enemy groups (I've taken care of an ancient demon slumbering in a mountain, and suddenly I'm having trouble with disgruntled miners?).

Yanno, I think I'll go create a new CoH/V-related thread so as not to spam this one.

To bring things back on topic, has anyone read the various Warcraft novelizations? The quality is uneven, to say the least, but they're convenient for a bit of light reading. I remember reading Lord of the Clans, and realizing that I had seen something like a promotional trailer for it (well, the game that it was supposed to be) on the Starcraft CD.

Compared to the actual mission itself in the first game, The Last Guardian made it seem all so dramatic. Even if none of it actually happened in the game. (I've never played the second game or its expansions, so I'm not sure how true the book is to it. Presumably Khadgar makes an appearance there.)

I stopped reading the forums when I stopped playing the game.

As far as game novelisations go, I tend not to read those. If the game can't engross me with the story (or with something else), why would I be interested in a novel?

Oh, and I actually played the first two Warcrafts (the third one was... well, not that interesting to me), damn those were some good times.

The MMO, as CFTF knows, I despise.

I'm a big fan of both Starcraft (FOR THE SWARM~!), and Warcraft 2. Didn't really like Warcraft 3 (multiplayer is impossible for mel. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much hero-ing for my taste), and I simply refuse to play WoW.

Back on-topic, I was more into the custom map scene myself with WC3. Even got a map by the name of "Real Life for Morons." Check it out, you might like it. (Go look at war3.incgamers.com)

In melee, I liked to play Undead. Ghoul rush, Fiend rush, Gargs on Abos, you name it. And then people started Hunt-massing. >_> I m da masser not u gtfo

But yeah, I don't play WC3 much, if at all, now.

*sigh* The flight paths are only too slow for lazy people who likes to magically morph through time and space to travel. And seriously, the FP's are DIRT CHEAP >_>

I used to play a little WCIII but I'm not really good at RTS games, so I stopped playing it :P Then after a while I decided I wanted to play it just to get to know the story a bit more so I cheatad.

I love the MMO, though. Well, I'm going to quit it for a while right now, but it's a really great MMO that I'd recommend everyone to play if they can play it moderately. >_>

Or for anyone who hit level 14 in CoX and isn't a total moron.

FPs are good Alt-Tabbing opportunities provided it doesn't crash the game. Use those to, say, look up potential builds for your character, chat with people, visit C-R even!

EDIT : And you CANNOT play WoW moderately. It's the kind of game that, if you really want to advance and want a perception of said advancement, you need to play a lot, and with a lot of people (due to instances being da bomb and all).

Corpsemaker on my second RFK was just luck. It doesn't always happen that way.

Yes, you can. It's a fine art, but it's possible. Although I sometimes flip out and go "HAY GUYZ WANNA GO SOME INSTANCES LOLOLOLOL?" but that doesn't happen very often.
