Greetings to you all! Something clicked in my head just 2 days ago, and I realized that my Wii was just collecting dust, because no more good games will come out for the system. Realizing my gaming days as a child, I bought a NES 2 Top Loader, Sega Genesis(2nd model), and Super Nintendo. It's still shipping, but I should have it soon. This thread is for conversations involving "retro" consoles. Hmm, maybe. But for just about $100 more, I bought 3 old consoles, where I can play the old Mario games, which I honestly love much more. |

NES: (short list is short). Paperboy: So difficult. I remember trying to conserve my papers. Pacman(I think) Gameboy Color: This counts right? Pokemon RYG and S: If you were a kid during the 90's, there was nothing bigger than Pokemon so there is nothing more that I need to add. Pokemon TGC: The best TGC video game ever. Billy Bob's huntin' and fishin': An altogether bad game that I got during my interest in fishing as a child. River King: Also got during due to my young interest in fishing. But this one was pretty good. It even had RPG battles with wildlife, and the battle system itself was cool. Tetris: It's tetris, what more do I need to say? Donkey Kong Land: Fun, but plauged with graphical glitches. SNES: This was my childhood. Donkey Kong Country: My first real game, I died so many times at the first beaver. The soundtrack was amazing, as well as the secrets that I spent so much time finding. Donkey Kong Country 3: For kicks, I decided to do a Spanish language playthrough in addition to an English. Only problem was, the Spanish playthrough got much farther than the English, so I had no idea what anyone was saying. Super Mario Super Stars: So many great Mario games, all rolled into one. I missed out on World and Yoshi's island, but this was a pretty good collection instead. Boogerman: Ugh, this was bad, but I still managed to pass my time with it. Tetris & Dr. Mario: Two great puzzle games. What more can I say? Kirby Super Star: My absolute favorite. I loved finding all the secrets hidden in this game. |

Nice. Ever try Tetris for the NES? It has colorful graphics, awesome sound effects, and mind-droning music. It was made in Russia, and is super addicting. |

Isn't the N64 considered retro nowadays, since it's been 10 years (and two console generations) since its release (at the very least, I'd say that it quailfies as retro)? Anyway, my favourites are as follows: SNES DKC Trilogy, although DKC2 is the most memorable due to the whole pirate theme it had going on. Super Star Wars Trilogy, my favourite being Return of the Jedi for the levels you get to play as Wicket the Ewok. Super Mario All-Stars: Not only can I play the 3 classic NES games with updated graphics, I can tear my hair out playing the 'true' sequal to the original SMB. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, my first ever zelda game and the second best in the series IMO. Super Mario Kart, the first videogame that I ever played. GB Tetris, this game is so addictive and I still play it to this very day! |

Nice list! Have you ever played Earthbound or Chrono Trigger? Amazing games if you're into RPGs, not much if you aren't. However, these games are ridiculously expensive now! Also, N64 is quite old now, but it still features 3D graphics, which is a bit too new for me:D |

Hmm, what kind of conversation would you suggest? Something like: Oh look, it's Earthbound. One of the best RPGs I have ever played but is more expensive than the Chinese Space Shuttle. Character naming, profile creation, etc. Actually references these a lot in the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() Battle sequences and boss fights. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are so many hilarious conversations in this game. Surprisingly includes sexual innuendo, drug/alcohol references, violent text, and references that only adults would get. You know, for kids! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Walking through the city; there are multiple cities with different themes. Each has a colorful view like this, with different shops. ![]() ![]() ![]() Each building you enter will be something different. Colorful, vibrant, and unique. Shows how much work went into this game. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is where Smash Bros got their references. (Mr. Saturn, Jeff the Missile Launcher, Charred Ness, etc.) The one downside to this game: It's at least $80 online now. |

Oh yeah, Earthbound is a classic. But if you can't afford it, that's what lps are for. Anyway, I wanted to bring up the Donkey Kong Country Series. This was my first game I actually owned, and because of that it holds a special place in my heart. Anyway, it got a ton of flak, even from Miyamoto himself, for all the collecting in it (which was off. None of the collecting was required, and it all just gave you extra lives, as opposed to the Dragon Coins in Super Mario World which gave you nothing but points if I remember correctly.) But the game presented atmosphere on a level that had never been reached before. The fantastic music(Aquatic Ambiance anyone) incorperated with the graphics and locations simply made you really feel like you were in a cave, or underwater, or the like. Now, personally I prefer DK3 to DK2, and I'll tell you why. The game had much more memorable locations and levels. I mean sure, pirate ships and brambles are cool, but exploring an abandoned mill, climbing a tree frantically before a continuously rising saw claims your life, or scaling the side of a mountain just seemed so amazing. |

Indeed, I wouldn't buy all three, for sure. I also enjoyed DKC 3, because the Gameboy Pocket version was the first video game I ever owned. I also like DKC 2 because of the pirate theme and amazing soundtrack. But like I said, I'd only buy one. But that's cause I'm cheap. And will probably be poor after buying Earthbound and Chrono Trigger. |

I remember only a few games from my childhood (not counting my MASSIVE Gamecube collection I have in my basement). Game boy Color: Super Mario Bros Deluxe Pokemon Yellow and Silver Game boy Advance: Wow...due to the fact that I lost most of my GBA games, I can hardly remember most of them. Gamecube: If I ran off a list of all the Gamecube games I have, I might wind up making this post too long. |

Yes, that's true. I updated the first post with screenshots, making it explosively visual and eye-straining. Well, anything before 1995 counts. That's when the 5th generation consoles appeared. Things like Jaguar, 3DO, Playstation, Saturn, and others are too new. By retro games I mean really old, only 8/16 bit. |

RETRO GAMES As for retro consoles, in our family there has been a NES (which got broken and thrown away about 10 years ago D:), GB Color (still working!) and SNES (STILL WORKING WOOT). As for retro games: NES (we don't have anymore, I wish I'd kept them D:) - Super Mario Bros. + Duck Hunt (in VC) - Super Mario Bros. 2 (we didn't own it but we played it at our friend's. in VC) - Super Mario Bros. 3 (same as above) - Chip An' Dale Rescue Rangers (same as above) - Megaman (same as above, in VC) - Blaster Master (same as above, PLEASE COME TO THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE BEEN WAITING FOR IT FOR 2 YEARS http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/list ... unsoft.png) - Bubble Bobble (EPIC, in VC) - Metroid (EPIC: when our NES was falling apart, it could only play Metroid. It ALWAYS worked! In VC) - TaleSpin (game I never finished, always got to the last boss but failed to win )':) - TMNT Arcade (EPIC, PLEASE COME TO VIRTUAL CONSOLE) - A sports game of which we played seldom, I never knew it's name o_O SNES - Donkey Kong Country (EPIC, still works!) - Donkey Kong Country 2 (not our's, our cousin's) - Donkey Kong Country 3 (not our's, my friend's) - Super Mario World (EPIC, still works!) - A sports game, again (still works!) - NHL '98 (still works!) GB Color - Pokemon Red/Blue (WORKS) - Pokemon Silver (works <3) - Super Mario Land (I bought this last year but I really love it <3) - Kirby's Dream Land (same as above <3) - Metroid 2: Return of Samus (same us above <3) I've been thinking about buying a Toploader or Retro Duo and buy games like Earthbound (never released in Europe) and some of the above which aren't in VC. Chrono Trigger in console would be nice too but they are really rare (AND EXPENSIVE) so... -SS |

Anyway, I never owned the actual console, but I bought the 10 games in one that Jacks Pacific collection Jacks Pacific released a few years ago. (for $20). It had several classics like Pong, Centipede, Breakout, and my personal favorite Adventure. Jacks Pacific release a Namco one I think around the same time. Did anyone else remeber these? I won't ramble on a lot, but yeah I loved the 8/16 bit eras fo gaming, back when programmers were limited on graphics and had to come up with more unique ways to make a game original. Today it just feels like game companies focus more on making a game LOOK good than actually BEING good. I'm not saying 3D sucks, but it just feels like there's been a gradual decline. Anyway, here's a more than likely incomplete list from me, since there's so many memories. NES Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 3 Contra Punch-Out!! Castlevania 1-3 Final Fantasy 1-3 (Though Final Fantasy II was annoying even to this day because of how you built up your characters) Legend of Zelda 1 and 2 Megaman 1-6 Gradius 1 and 2 (Sucks 2 on the NES was only released in Japan) Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 (I never liked 3) Dr. Mario Tetris Double Dragon 1 and 2 (3 was too hard, couldn't even beat the first stage) Adventure Island 1-3 (4 was JP only, and was very different compared to the others) Adventures of Lolo 1-3 Bubble Bobble 1 and 2 Clu Clu Land Excite Bike Kirby's Dream Land Kung-Fu Little Nemo the Dream Master River City Ransom Tiny Toon Adventures 1 and 2 Yoshi Earthbound Zero SNES Gradius II Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage Super Metroid Super Punch-Out!! Illusion of Gaia Terranigma (Never released in the US) The Lost Vikings 1 and 2 Super Mario World Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Final Fantasy 4-6 Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars UN Squadron Super Adventure Island 2 Megaman X 1-3 Megaman 7 Megaman and Bass Super Castlevania 4 Donkey Kong Country 1-3 Ms. Pac-Man Earthbound Sega Genesis Sonic The Hedgehog 1-3 Sonic and Knuckles (As well as having a Sonic game attached to the top of Sonic and Knuckles) Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (US version of 3 was meh) Phantasy Star 2 and 4 Columns |
