Radiant Historia is an RPG from Atlus for the DS. It didn't come out too long ago, but it seems to have flown way under the radar, despite positive reviews.
I somehow managed to find a copy without going online, along with the Yoko Shimomura Piano CD. I haven't beaten it yet, but I'm pretty close.

Anyway, this game needs some more love. If you like old-school SNES RPGs like Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, then you'll probably love this game. But it's more than that.

Radiant Historia is about a spy named Stocke working in a war between his nation, the industrialized theocracy of Alistel, and the old monarchy of Granorg. Without giving away too much, Stocke is given a book that allows him to go back and forth in time to different pivotal points of history where he is present, and eventually he'll be going between two separate timelines. Stocke's goal is to find "the true history" and save the world. However, he may not be the only one tinkering with time...

It looks and plays like an old-school RPG, with 2-D sprites and turn-based battles. However, there are no random encounters. A monster has to touch you in order to start a battle (think Paper Mario) and it's actually quite easy to escape from monsters if you don't want to battle. I do suggest not running away too often though, or else some bosses may prove more difficult. The battles themselves are actually innovative. In battle, enemies are on a 3x3 grid and Stocke and some of his allies have abilities to push enemies around the grid. You can push one enemy into another enemy, which allows you to attack both at once during a combo for greater damage. With the grid and the wide array of abilities your party gets, battles have a lot of variety and rarely get boring.
And the game is one of the best-looking I've seen on the DS. The character portraits are beautiful and the backgrounds and environments are gorgeous.

So have you played Radiant Historia? If you did, what did you think? If you haven't, I think you should try it out.

Bought it,
played it,
completed it,
loved it. <3

And you're luckier than me...The game I had didn't have the piano collection CD with it...
...Me sad... D:

Anyway...I seriously like this game, heck; it's one of my best DS games.
The story is just...GREAT...!
Sure, some people might get bored of all politics, but it really shines if you pay attention to it.
I didn't follow it completely, but still managed to get most of it.

One thing I like in this game, more than some other DS RPG's,
is that the enemies stay well balanced.
Honestly, you can pretty much play through the game without getting stuck and need to level grind.
There are only few, and that's like 5, battles where you can get stuck,
but...It's only five boss battles and the game has them. MUCH.
What I'm trying to say is that you hardly get stuck for it in hours or so
and this way you can keep up with the story and enjoy it better.

I guess I could talk about this game for ages,
but...Right now I seriously need to go to sleep.
In a nutshell; Awesome game and definitely one of the best RPG's on DS, if not even the best.
If you like RPG's and have a DS; buy it.
You don't need to even think of bad doubts for the story and the music.
I promise it's an epic game.

Loved the game so much. I loved the music, loved the battle system, loved the plot.

I hope they make another.

Umm...I do want them make another R.H too, but...You know...
There's always a change it won't be as epic or would even sank the original with it.
THAT I don't want.
But if the sequel would be at least as epic, with different cast of course, then I'm not against it.

Hehe...Feels odd to talk about sequels when they're not making one.
Or at least that we know of. *crossing fingers*

Pft. Of course I wouldn't want the same cast. Not that the cast was bad by any means, But a lot of the cast was defined by the plot. Who betrays who, who doesn't know who he is, that sort of thing, all that awesomeness would be lost in a direct sequel.

But an indirect sequel, a la Chrono Cross, that would work fine.

But really, I'm mostly interested in a return of the grid based battle system, an epic non-linear plot, and of course Yoko's music.

I wonder why Barranca and Elm didn't get character portraits when the Gutral chiefs did and they didn't even get as much screentime. Was it to balance the number of character portraits between the two species of Beastkind or something weird like that? There just happens to be more important Satyros than Gutrals, that's all. :/

Yeah...To be honest I don't even think it could be epic with the same cast. :yuusaku:
Especially if you'd play as a Stocke again.
Spoiler: Haven't played it? Then believe me; you don't want to read this. :lana:
That would mean that the actions of the sequel would happen in the middle of the original.
Or at least before it's revealed that Stocke is Ernst and he that Heiss is the mastermind.
*as a side note; bravo Zinnie...You just typed the worst spoils of the game in one sentence...*

And...That would be definitely uncool.
Happening in the middle of everything would just cause more questions and we get all needed from the epilogues of the game.

Speaking of that...Wouldn't it be nice if the main character in the sequel would be a son or daughter of Sonja and Rosch?
We'd see older versions of Rosch and Sonja and probably get a mentions of the others.
Gafka being a gutral chief or something, Aht teaching you some skills, Marco being an to medic or captain with Raynie...That kinda stuff.

...Speaking of this sequel we might not get is more fun than I thought :D

Meh...I've never played Chrono Cross (odd isn't it?) so I don't know how that works.
But yeah, new cast please.

And yeah, the battle system was cool and definitely something I'd want to see more.
Maybe more technicues and stuff too.
And of course, the world need more Yoko's music.
The full ost is just...awesome, but it's kinda...small...
Take the "Where the Wind and Feathers Return" -for example.
It's just awesome, but it plays, like, over 9.000 times in the game.
It didn't make it less epic at all, not saying that, but bigger soundtrack would have made the game more epic IMO.
...If that's even possible.

Yeah, that was one point that I mentioned in another thread; the soundtrack is awfully small, with "Where the Wind and Feathers Return" being the biggest offender. It's especially jarring since there's the somewhat darker sad tune "Interrupted Moment" which only plays once in the game.

I gotta say, thanks for the recommendation on this game for those who told me about it. I just bought the game a few hours ago and clocked in a little over an hour and a half and already this game is proving to be pretty fun. I'm really loving the battle system a lot, it's addictive. Music is fantastic as well and so far, the story is pretty good. It's been a while since I've played a good, new RPG that hasn't been some kind of remake.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

I like to think Radiant Historia was overlooked mostly because it released at a terrible time. Dragon Quest VI, Pokemon Black/White, Tactics Ogre, and Ys Chronicles all came out around the same time, and that's just counting handheld RPGs that caught my interest.

And those are all sequels (maybe remakes) to older properties if I recall correctly. I think I remember Tactics Ogre being on SNES.

Hmm... Let see:

Dragon Quest VI: I don't think this is a remake.

Pokemon Black/White: You can't say it's a remake nor a sequel, more like an entry in an enormous franchise (think Final Fantasy).

Tactics Ogre: If s/he's referring to Let Us Cling Together for the PSP, then it's a remake.

Ys Chronicles: And I think this one's a remake of two games.

Really, a lot of great games have been ported/remade lots of times (such as FF4).

Didn't they just make Dragon Quest 9 or something? So I'm fairly sure in that case that VI is a remake. I don't know for sure since I'm not a fan of the series.

Yes, Dragon Quest VI is a remake.
It was released for SFC in japan at the end of the year in 1995.

The DS version, the remake, didn't make it to outer seas until 2011,
hitting US at February and EU in May.

And like wooster said, yeah...It would be odd to have the ninth game without fifth.
And...Anyone remember that the Dragoon Quest VIII - Joyrny of the Cursed King has been on PS2 since 2004 - 2006?

That said, it is a remake.

....Umm...But enough of that right?
Back to Radiant Historia. :phoenix:

I just got Radiant Historia today (along with Avalon Code, which I'm playing the shit out of!) after I saw it on the /v/'s recommended games list and I've only played the beginning (I don't think Stocke should be considered a spy, more of an agent) and so far, compared to Chrono Trigger, it hasn't really caught my eye... seemed kinda generic to me.
Spoiler: The Beginning in a Nutshell
You're one of the best warriors in your organization. Your leader is sending you out on an important and very dangerous mission in which you will be partied with some people you never met. Get to know them. You go out on your mission and everything's good so far, then shit hits the fan. You're party members are dead/mortally wounded and you barely escaped with your life. At that time, you receive/learn of a new weapon/power that you will use/will help you in the future, only you can use it, and you have to save the world with it.

I've played too many games that started like this...

Also, the grid system isn't that new either. In Megaman NT Warrior they have the grid system as well, but it was in real time and you can move your character. I found it more fun, but still, I'll continue playing RH. I didn't get this for nothing. I'm currently about to do my second mission and I choose to work under Rosch... Wonder where this will take me. I bet some of you are snickering... >_>

The start of RH is a little typical, but it picks up later. The battles also get much more fun once you get more skills than "push this guy left, then hit him with your sword."

One of the things that I discovered only late in the combat system, was that hitting your foe 'up' meant that the next attack does 1.5 damage upon ground impact.

Just be patient, you've basically just started and completed like...Hmm...Maybe not even 1% of the game yet.
Believe me, it changes pretty soon a bit and your gonna like the whole thing in the end.

Maaan...I knew Chrono Trigger would pop out here sooner or later...
What you guys think?
Persoally; I think it has that time travel thing, but it still stands unique enough not to look like Chroo Trigger clone.
Heck, I don't even think of it as a Chrono Trigger clone, not saying that anyone else does.
...Just mentioned.

@Boltie
- Indeed. There's nothing better than use all push attacks and basically kill every enemy in a single turn.
...Or you can just toy with them; Marco uses grapple, Stocke uses Push attack, Marco uses grapple, Stocke uses Push attack, etc :D

Beat it a few days ago. I liked it a lot, even though I'm not a big fan of RPGs. I liked how
Spoiler:
even though the story branches, you can travel between both timelines freely, instead of having to beat the game twice to see what happens in both timelines or something like that. It's cool that you can't really screw up, and if you choose a wrong option and hit a dead end, you can just travel back to that node and try again.

Right now in my game, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I'm on chapter 4 in both storylines and in the AH, I get owned by thaumatech and in the MH, I barely take away any health from the regenerating bodyguard... I had to keep making Stocke and Aht heal.

Thunder magic works wonders on Thaumatech. Just sayin'. That goes for both Aht and Raynie. And poison status works on almost all bosses.

I played this game a few months ago, and loved it. The story was really good IMO and the ending is definitely unconventional.

Spoiler:
I rarely see RPG plots where a villain isn't necessarily evil, and has a motive that makes sense. I also like how there isn't a "good" or "evil" country, there's corruption everywhere and it's really based on how people run them, as well as the thoughts of the people living in them.

The progression of the game's difficulty was great too, I thought. The more games I play, the more intolerant I am of generic grinding in order to keep up with the pace of the game's difficulty. For RH, I believe all the battles I fought were just right. Randoms were comfortably fun and hassle-free, bosses were somewhat challenging but not impossible, and the final boss was a struggle but rewarding.

And yes, I did love Aht and her traps. Sooooo useful against the thaumatechs. OHK pretty much after a shove combo. Plus she's so adorable. :3

Also, is anyone else a little disappointed that:
Spoiler:
they didn't really develop Raynie and Stocke's relationship much? The most they had was the sidequest that unlocks Raynie's cutscene in the True Ending.
