Are there any Metal Gear fans out there on Court Records?

This is perhaps my favorite game series of all time and I'm starting this thread because I'd like to hear other user's thoughts on it. Great stealth gameplay, amazing stories, high quality voice acting and music; what's there not to like?

What are your favorite things about the series? I'm talking about any game, character, moment, song, etc. Whatever you've enjoyed from Metal Gear in its 25+ years of existence, I'd love to hear it. If it's a spoiler, though; please mark it!

I'm such a huge fan, I probably know almost everything about Metal Gear. Unfortunately, I could never play MGS4 due to not owning a PS3. I've seen the entire longplay, though; and I thought it was fantastic. My favorite one in the series is probably MGS3.

I also love Hideo Kojima's other games like Snatcher and Policenauts. Feel free to talk about those too!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts! :jake:

METAL GEAR?!

Yeah man I love that stuff.
I've played....most of the games.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
MGS1,2,3,4
Rising: Reveangence
Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2
Portable Ops
Peace Walker

Latest accomplishment was Reveangence.
My girlfriend brought it up saying it was short enough for me to blast through it in one and now she did I actually find I'm missing it a bit.
I did beat it while she was up and it was fun if brief, I felt the plot was similar enough to something metal gear would do in fact I heard the plot was unchanged from conception and it seems right. Gameplay manages to get down the feeling of 'ultra powerful cyborg ninja' pretty well and some of the supporting cast are nice enough especially Doktor I enjoyed.

I haven't gotten Revengeance yet because I'm not going to spend $60 on a game that's pretty short. Still, I've played the demo and I really liked it. If anything, I think that it's more of something to hold you over until MGS5 comes out. There's plenty of DLC that you can buy for Rising, too.

I've played the original Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, The Twin Snakes, and all the games on the HD Collection. Oh yeah, and Metal Gear Solid on GameBoy too. What's your favorite game in the series?

I've only played Twin Snakes (never beat it since the second disk was FUBAR), MGS3 which is my favorite, and MGS2 which... well took a while to get used to and I still haven't beaten it yet.
I'm Blak, and I have shit taste.

I think MGS3 was my favourite, that or Peace Walker.

MGS3 is just such a wonderful cinematic experience and the characters are all cool.
Then you play MGS4 and the game becomes immensely sad when you consider what happens to them all.

That's a shame. I don't care what people say, the Twin Snakes is amazing! You should try getting another copy if you can.

MGS2 isn't that long either, so you should be able to finish it soon.

I like MGS3 because it feels like a James Bond-esque spy story. It's also one of the few games in the Metal Gear series that has a straight-forward story. I'm playing Peace Walker now and I really like it. I still haven't beaten it though. There's so many hours of content!

Yeah all an all Big Boss is my favourite of the protagonists, since you basically see everything he goes through. Even if his viewpoint and moral compass get skewed all the time he's such a bloody determined and charismatic protagonist it's easy to see how so many people swore their lives to him.

Big Boss is my favorite character too. It'll be interesting to see how Big Boss goes through everything in MGS5. It looks like a really great game.

Anyways, I've written an adaption of the first two Metal Gear games (Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake). It's called Metal Gear: The First Missions. I've worked really hard on it, and I've always wanted to share it with people and hear their opinions.

http://www.mediafire.com/?chg4b46tmx9g1sq

Please read it if you have the time! It's 135 pages including extras! I think that I've faithfully adapted the spirit of the games into novel form. I've even taken exact dialogue from the games! I hope you'll enjoy it! :jake:

Yup, they're all there. Even minor stuff like radio frequencies and the infamous "order of plastic explosives" to destroy Metal Gear are all exactly the same. :will:

MGS3 Is definitely my favorite, and my favorite boss from all the games would have to be The Fury.

Hey now no love for Psycho Mantis? One of the most innovative boss battles out there?

Though yeah The End is a close second for amazing interesting boss fights. A real sniper battle, of a totally different kind to Sniper Wolf's but still.

How could have I forgotten Psycho Mantis?!

Like I mentioned before, only Hideo Kojima could come up with stuff like this. I wonder where he gets it from.

Recently beat Rising. I'd say this game is good but not great. The gameplay is fantastic and sets the bar for hack-and-slashers in my opinion, and the music is top-class as well (got the soundtrack for £11 :pearly: ). The bosses are also original and challenging. However, the game is marred by a boring plot and the fact that the supporting characters that Raiden talks to on the Codec are absolutely meaningless to the plot, bar a couple. As well as that, the game is quite short, it only took me about 7-8 hours to finish.

With that in mind, this game gets my completio--I mean Weejus rating of: Play it!

Yeah man I actually loved the game.

I didn't actually mind the plot so much, I thought it was great how they brought in a plot that was actually relevant to Raiden himself and the motivations of the final villain I thought are pretty interesting. How the villain's plan turns out in the end too is actually pretty interesting since it's hardly a perfect solution.

I went and got the soundtrack too...though I swear my version was cheaper did you get it off google play?

As for the supporting characters (bosses not included) I actually didn't mind them.
Ok Courtney is pretty bland but fills a mandatory role.
Doktor and Boris made up most of the interesting conversations, especially Doktor. Actually talking to those two made me for the first time interested in the Metal Gear 'Universe', how the world goes on outside the plot with cyborg technology becoming increasingly prevalent.

The real criminal here is Kevin...he doesn't fulfil any real purpose to anyone. Boris has weapon tech, Doktor has enemy and body tech information. Courtney can save. He's literally just a token black guy in this production.

Though for the game length...it's about standard for hack an slashers I think.

I haven't played Rising yet, but I picked up the Zone of the Enders HD Collection yesterday. I've heard a lot of good (and bad) things from the series, but I'm sure I'll find it to be enjoyable. From what I've played of Rising, I think it looks fantastic.

To be fair, you're right about the plot being relevent to Raiden, and I APPLAUD Platinum Games for redesigning Raiden, as now 'fans' can no longer bitch about him being a sissy version of Snake (although had Rose not existed in MGS2, Raiden would probably have been considered a lot less of a pretty-boy Final Fantasy (post-IX) reject). And as for the few supporting characters that actually matter, I was referring to Doktor and
Spoiler:
Blade Wolf
but yes, Boris is alright but considering this game is pretty much Metal Gear in name only, surely they could have used any other function to save other than the codec? Courtney feels like the token female in Rising.

And as for the soundtrack, I got a physical copy at a local store. I can't believe they were all buried underneath the likes of Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon cards (I collect neither btw). They should have been advertising the CDs next to the game like 'Buy the game and get the soundtrack half price'!

I've actually reviewed the soundtrack for the video game music site that I write for. It hasn't been published yet though because we're currently re-launching the whole site. Anyways, I said that the actual in-game soundtrack was underwhelming compared to previous works in the series. For the vocal album, I gave that one a higher score. I really enjoyed the hard rock styled themes, but I personally didn't care for the instrumental or variant versions on the album.

Hmmm did you get the vocal track soundtrack or the full one? I only picked up the Vocal track one. Currently hooked on Sam's theme and "A hot wind blowing" but hey physical copies are nice right? Guess that justifies the extra cost, something to put on a shelf.

An yes I suppose Courtney and Kevin are token girl and black guy respectively. Least they aren't so horrifically stereotypical like some other things that use tokens.
I mean MGS4 just had a save option right? It wasn't a codec call just a save. It's a shame because the Metal Gear series 'savers' all had their own little thing for a good while.

Mei Ling had her proverbs
Rose had her.......well I suppose she explained Raiden's backstory in America...amongst other problems.
Paramedic had her awesome movie trivia (shame she turned out SO wrong).

Maybe they felt compelled by tradition to have a woman as the saver without giving her any real....thing or reason to be.

One thing I think was handled poorly was the first 'Jack the ripper' scene. The dialogue just gets so cheesy as Quintinn Flynn tries to sound as gruff as possible. Good thing it's followed by arguably the best boss fight of the game.

Though yeah Professor I agree, when I first heard you say that I hadn't had much of a good chance to listen to all the tracks on the vocal and instrumental album but now I've got it down I dropped most of the pure-instrumental tunes and a couple of non-boss tracks from my MP3 player.

I pretty much view Metal Gear Rising as something to hold the gamers over for until MGSV is completed. I've played Bayonetta before and I thought it was great. I'm sure that people are angry though that the sequel is only coming to Wii U. Luckily I have one!

MGSV will be amazing though. I can't believe that the Fox Engine is capable of running on Xbox 360 and PS3. Kojima also wants to make a Silent Hill game with it too. I'm assuming that we'll probably get Ground Zeroes by Q4 2013/Q1 2014 and The Phantom Pain will be out by Q4 2014/Q1 2015. It always takes such a long time for these games to come out, but the wait is always well worth it.

I'm still sad about David Hayter not voicing Snake in MGS5.

Nah Rising was in the works for ages I doubt it was made to tide folks over. Though I hope Platinum will continue the Rising series.

Didn't know Kojima wanted to make a Silent Hill game.
Considering this is the guy who brought us The Sorrow boss battle I think that would be pretty sweet.

I'm on the fence as to whether I want Platinum to continue the Rising series. On the one hand, I feel as if Raiden and the gameplay have potential to warrant a further instalment but on the other hand, I don't want Platinum to be bogged down with one series, as one of their greatest strengths is creating exciting new IPs and making good games out of them.

Well, Rising WAS supposed to be MGS5 originally and so was Peace Walker. However, Kojima felt that Rising wasn't going the way he wanted so the project was secretly cancelled. Cue Platinum Games, and the made an entirely different game. At first, Rising wasn't even supposed to star Raiden. Kojima wanted Gray Fox to be the main playable character, but Raiden was decided later on. I think they want to do a sequel to the game, but with Gray Fox this time. I honestly think that would be badass to play as him. :godot:

Besides Silent Hill, Hideo Kojima is also doing a collaborative project with Suda51 and 5pb. If you didn't know, 5pb is a Japan-exclusive company that's known for their visual novel games, particularly the Science Adventure series which consists of Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, and Robotics;Notes. Anyways, Kojima is a big fan of these games so he's teaming up with them to do a brand new adventure game, plus an anime adaption of it. It hasn't been made clear whether this is the fourth title in the SA series, or if it's a brand new IP. All we know is that it's happening. What's even better is that Kojima actually wants to release this game world wide! He wants to "revive" the adventure game genre and introduce Westerners to these types of games. I'm sure that with Kojima's name being advertised, this game will do well. Of course, he's busy with MGS5 and a potential Silent Hill game; so it could be awhile until we see this one. :sadshoe:

:sadshoe:

Yeah Rising has been through so many different things, heard Kojima got real grumpy when he couldn't use Gray Fox. I also heard it was originally meant to be a game about how Raiden rescued Sunny from the Patriots.

Now I think the plot and characters were written by Kojima but Platinum covered the gameplay.

Why couldn't Kojima use Gray Fox? It's his series and his characters, right?

I think pushy executives and marketing.

Was Gray Fox just not popular enough?

Japan is a BIG fan of pretty boys. Granted Frank Jaeger wasn't....horribly ugly under his armoured shell but he's no Raiden.

I wonder, was Raiden better accepted in Japan than in the West?

Well guys, Kiefer Sutherland has been officially confirmed as the new voice and motion capture actor Snake. Any thoughts on this?

Personally, I think he'll be fine as Snake; but completely different in style than what David Hayter previously did with the series. Who knows, perhaps Big Boss will finally meet a young Solid Snake in MGSV. :udgy:

I wonder if David Hayter did something to upset Kojima and co to get him kicked off the project.

I'm not sure he'll be as good, his regular voice doesn't sound gruff enough and I don't want to hear him talk and just hear Jack Bauer. It depends on the final result.

Again I think it's a really weird decision to swap the voice now and unless Hayter does show up as young Solid Snake then I'm really not sure why they changed.

Also was expecting Richard Doyle to come back

Eh, all voice actors have to retire eventually. Hayter needs to move on to other things.

Like I said though, he's completely different in tone than what David Hayter was. I haven't heard of him before (I don't watch that much TV) but he seems capable enough.

I was thinking about a young Solid Snake appearing in the game; but since The Phantom Pain takes place in 1984, Solid Snake would only be about 12 years old. Unless they jump forward a few years, I don't know if it'll happen.

Yeah, I was too; but it seems that none of us can understand how Kojima's mind works. :gregory:

Except for the fact that Hayter himself had NO INTENTIONS of retiring. He enjoys the games just as much as we all do. It isn't just another voice acting job for him.

I'm slowly playing through the series for the first time.

I've completed Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. I'm working on Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty right now.

I'm not too excited for Rising because I play MGS totally non-lethally (Tranquilizer gun is the only real weapon I use) and Rising looks way to violent for me to be into.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Well what do you think of the series so far? I find that even the 8-bit games (particularly MG2) still have compelling stories even by today's standards.

The only MG games I can't play are Portable Ops (the story isn't that important anyways) and MGS4 (I don't have a PS3). I did watch a longplay of both games a few years ago, though.

Yeah, Rising is pretty violent; but it was directly made by Platinum Games whom are specifically known for their over the top action games like Bayonetta. Still, I've heard that it is in fact possible to go through the whole game non-lethally. It makes the game a whole lot more difficult, but it's can be done.

I really enjoy it. I technically started playing Snake Eater 3DS about a year ago, but later I decided to get a PS3 and the HD collection and started over.

I didn't enjoy Metal Gear; it just became aggravating after a while, but I did enjoy Metal Gear 2. The Twin Snakes was really good. I'm really enjoying MGS2 as well. So far 3 has been my favorite, although I haven't finished it yet because of the console switch.

I heard that about Rising early on in development, but then I read something that said it wasn't possible closer to release. But if that is true i'll try Rising out at some point as well.

Yeah, the original Metal Gear can be pretty frustrating at times. It's an extremely important game, and it's the reason we have the stealth genre; but a lot of its gameplay simply hasn't aged well. MG2 on the other hand still holds up even to this day, and it ranks among some of the best 8-bit games. MGS1 is a cinematic masterpiece, and so is MGS3. Especially 3 because I like its 1960s James Bond-esque feel. MGS2 is great too, but I'd be lying if I said that I thought the story wasn't a bit convoluted. I don't hate Raiden like most people seem to, it's just that a lot of people went into this game expecting Snake. Knowing Kojima now, I think we all know what we're getting into with each game.

If you like Kojima's games, check out Snatcher and Policenauts as well. Some of the best examples of storytelling in games ever! :godot:
