So Earthbound just released on the Wii U Virtual Console. Any fans here? Personally, I think it's one of the most underrated games of all time, and no doubt one of the greatest games on the SNES. Not to mention it gave birth to one of the creepiest and most disturbing final bosses ever.

I bought all three games for the GBA last year.... and still haven't gotten around to them =_= Is it better to play them in order?

I have no idea what convinced my parents to buy my brother and I Earthbound when we were young, but I'm forever thankful that they did. Such a wonderful series (though I admit I haven't fully played through Mother 1).

The connections aren't super-strong (each game's story is standalone), but they're definitely there and done in some ways that'll really hit best if you play them in order. That said if you can play the SNES or WiiU version of Earthbound, opt for that, since I hear the GBA version has a few issues.
Hi! I've largely stepped back from C-R due to life stuff. Please contact one of the other staff members for help!

The only ones I know that are connected - at least in a way that one would spoil the other - are Earthbound and Mother 3, so play Earthbound first before playing Mother 3.

I like the Earthbound games... well, the ones I've played. I played Earthbound a few times, always had fun. I started playing a translated patch version of Mother 3 on the GBA, but gave up after an hour or so. I dunno why, maybe because I didn't get the Background Beat Hitting = More Hits... or something.

The Earthbound games are fun because... they're kinda cookey.
Practically everything fights you, stop signs, rats, ducks, animated poo and melting clocks. They seem really lighthearted and really 'for kids' the games, but getting into them, you realize that some of them are anything but that.
I know it's probably been mentioned before, but Giygas' form at the end of Earthbound and his dialoge come from an R Rated movie murder/rape scene that the producer watched as a kid. So yeah, that whole scene is one giant mind fuck and really creepy.

PS: I remember the attempt I once made of getting the Poo-Exclusive equipment for him in that one place. I gave up after an hour because I was sick and tired of fighting the same guys over and over in hopes of the 1 in 128 Drop.

Sorta a necro, but it's ontopic... (and with Lucas returning to Smash...)

So I mentioned I got all the games earlier in the topic, but this month I finally got around to playing both Mother 2 (Earthbound) (GBA version) and Mother 3 (GBA). Enjoyed them both quite a lot. Storywise and as well as a RPG, Mother 3 was clearly the superior one, but I still prefer Mother 2, because Itoi's quirky script and characters just work better in the more open (AND LESS HEAVY) world of 2, rather than in the more storydriven world of 3, I think. Itoi's script for both games is absolutely brilliant by the way, and the way he plays with characters, themes, conventions and player-game interaction is just amazing.

Ah Earthbound is a series I still need to finish! I completed MOTHER 3 and absolutely loved it! I really enjoyed the story. I own Earthbound on the Wii U, but haven't played much, yet I really do like what I've played so far (am up to Threed).

Also with that Fan MOTHER 4 that's been in development for a bunch of years looking really professional, I think I should play some more Earthbound.
