Has anyone else played this? It is a translated version of an old SNES game called Night of the Kamaitachi, developed by the same company that did 999 and Virtues Last Reward.

It's out for iOS, but despite being assured that the Android release would soon follow, there has been no news on that, two months after the iOS release.

The basic storyline is that the protagonist, Max is invited to spend the night at a ski lodge in Canada with Grace, his "sort-of" girlfriend. Soon after they go into the lodge for the night, a murder occurs.

This is basically a "choose your own adventure" game, with over 30 endings.

I've only played a little so far (got to the part where you have to purchase the app to continue, but for some reason Apple decided it wasn't having it...waiting to hear back from Apple Support now)

Spoiler: Current Speculations
So far, I'm thinking only Max and Abby can be ruled out; Max because he is the playable character, and does not show any signs of mental distress. Abby should be clear because I know from the promotional screens that she's going to end up as a victim.

Grace is raising some flags in how keen she was for Max to come with her, and how friendly she is, given that Max specifically mentions that Grace was quite lukewarm towards him prior to the trip, but I think I read that she pops up again in a later game, so I'm assuming she's clear.

I can't remember his name now, the guest that showed up last, the bearded man; he should be in the clear because he arrived after the threatening note, but I'm thinking the note really was a joke, and not actually connected to the murders. Not only did the first murder occur before midnight, it was found on the floor of the room of the girl that plays an online game famed for it's sadism, and wanted to make one of her online friends cry in that game. It's also interesting that the bearded man was the one to put forward the Banshee myth as well.

I'm also slightly suspicious of the victim, Mr Jones (in my game, I chose to quietly ask Grace if she thought he was Mafia, not sure if voicing that suspicion aloud or asking him directly would have resulted in him not being killed), mainly because Max comments that the body was in such a state, he couldn't be entirely certain that it was Mr Jones.

Man another game by the 999 people? I'd love a shot at it but sadly I'd need to wait for an android version.

I love Kamaitachi no Yoru! It was a very influential game when it was first released, basically the first detective game that really made optimal use of the possibilities of presentation in videogames to do detective fiction.

Note that even though there are a lot of bad endings in Kamaitachi no Yoru, they all contain little hints that point to the real solution. It's also possible to prevent murders in the first game (something not featured in subsequent games).

Did they also localize all the side stories? The best thing of Kamaitachi was that after clearing the initial 'mystery chapter', you could read other variations on the 'everyone-arrives-at-the-ski-lodge-story', like one with a supernatural twist, or another where they parody a dungeon crawler RPG...

For those interested, I have written reviews on the original Kamaitachi no Yoru, Kamaitachi no Yoru 2 (PS2/PSP) and Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru (VITA)

Edit: BTW, Max and Grace.... They'll always be Tooru and Mari to me!

After Apple made a change to my account, I was able to unlock the rest of the game.

I've been playing for a good part of the day; got some bad endings, a "bittersweet ending" and a good ending.

As mentioned, this game does have a lot of endings (and I think most, if not all of the side stories are there as well) so even after you discover who's behind the murder/s there's still a lot to do.

Spoiler: Heavy Spoilers
I am a little disappointed that it was Faberge in the end; though it didn't help that I got the bad ending from refusing to let Bobby go with Max to investigate the room where Mr. Jones was found. As everyone else was downstairs, and the sound clip indicated that only one person outside had fallen to the floor, that was a definite flag against Faberge, as was the fact that going to the room with Grace and Bobby didn't lead to a bad ending.

I am hoping one ending might explain why Faberge killed everyone though; given the way he keeps claiming that he only kills to protect himself, and everyone, including Amber thought that Mr. Buchanan did it after Abby was killed. Faberge admits to the killings as well in that ending where Grace kills him, so it wasn't like everyone snapped and killed each other (not at least not in that scenario, there is that path where Tiffany tries to kill Max, Max kills her instead, and Grace kills Max, thinking he's a murderer)

On a sort of related note, I also got the ending where Max intentionally kills Grace by hitting her on the head; I think that surprised me the most so far.

Some of the side stories seem...unusual. Cross-dressing Goat? :phoenix:

Regarding a question within the spoiler part:

Spoiler: Obvious spoiler alert (mystery chapter and most of its endings)
It's been a while since I last played the game, and I don't remember the exact (chronological) order of events precisely, but I think it's always a combination of Mikimoto (Faberge?) killing people, and panic-kills by the rest of the guests. If you don't solve the Tanaka/Jones murder right away, Midori (Abby?) figures out the truth and is killed by Mikimoto (Faberge?). Unless you solve the Tanaka/Midori murders right then, everyone (including Mikimoto/Faberge) kinda lose it. For example, Mikimoto kills Tooru and Mari (Max & Grace) if they search the room (and probably continues to murder the rest of the guest after which), but even if you manage to avoid that, the three female guests are really on edge, and can snap through pretty much anything, leading to panic kills (leading to the Mari/Grace killing Tooru/Max ending, or the Tooru/Max pushing Mari/Grace off the stairs). Even if you get Kayama (Buchanan?) in the basement, it seems 'something' sets Mikimoto off (probably someone figuring him out like Midori did), once again leading to murders.

Some of the side stories are really crazy. The spy one is awesome, as well as the hidden message story... I played the PSX version, and that had extra scenarios not found in the original Super Famicom release (one with Mari as a private eye, and a "A little sexy Kamaitachi no Yoru" audio drama. I assume the iOS port is based on the original SFC release though...

Well, it's actually more precise to say a game by the people behind 3DS's Starship Damsey. Both Damsey and Kamaitachi were written by mystery writer Abiko Takemaru and designed by Asano Kazuya.

Funny story: I imported Kamaitachi no Yoru for the Super Famicom a few months ago. I thought, "This is an important game. It's in new condition, it's cheap, and it'll help me learn Japanese." So I bought it off of eBay and it arrived on January 24, 2014. Not the moment I open the game, I check online to find out that the game had been officially released in English on iOS! Now, I sort of knew that Chunsoft wanted to localize this game, but that announcement was made back in 2012 with no updates. I had assumed that they'd cancelled those plans, but I was proven wrong by this strange coincidence. Needless to say, I downloaded it immediately. :basil:

I've only read through a bit though because I'm currently busy with other visual novels. While it's great that they've updated the graphics to HD photos and enhanced the music with real instruments, I really don't like how they Americanized the script. Sure, you can change the name of the main characters, but everything else can't. It's bearable, but is obviously pandering to the eBook crowd in the hopes that they won't be turned off by a visual novel that's "too Japanese."

Whatever, if it makes visual novels even A LITTLE more popular in the West, then I support Aksys. We need more of these games translated and released officially so the market can do better. At least stuff like Zero Escape and Dangan Ronpa have been doing well. The fact that we've also gotten Steins;Gate localized is a HUGE leap seeing that it has practically no real gameplay. :jake:

Well, the first game is not that cultural specific (even the Kamaitachi aren't as prominent as their place in the title suggest) so while I myself wouldn't localized it like this, I don't think it hurts the game that much. The second feels a bit more 'Japanese', but the funny thing is, you could perfectly well localize Kamaitachi no Yoru 2 with the original names, and it still would make sense in relation to Banshee's Last Cry! (Kamaitachi no Yoru X3 is also light on the cultural specific side of things. Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru once again features a typical Japanese monster, but could well be swapped with Generic Kid Ghost).

Oh, and I really just noticed it, but did they remove the character models in the smartphone versions?! Sure, they were just blue silhouettes, but that was part of the charm! Kamaitachi no Yoru isn't really itself with the blue shadows!

Ah, I remember buying that game!
Well, honestly it's more of a choose your own adventure novel, but still.
The explanation of how the murderer did it confused me quite a bit and I just sort of went along with it, but I did work out who the culprit was fairly early on - though I did actually suspect the wrong person at first.

Spoiler: AA5 & Banshee's Last Cry Spoilers
When Max started to suspect Bobby of being the killer, I thought to myself, 'Oh dammit, not this again!' Fortunately it didn't turn out to be him in the end, because I really did like him as a character. The ending where he shoots himself after all your hard work catching and beating Faberge with him was really sad.

I do hope some of the other games get ported to iOS at some point, I'd love to play them too. The premise of the 2nd game actually sounds really interesting. Hopefully if the 999 app does reasonably well, they'll think about porting the other Kamaitachi no Yoru games.
