I noticed we didn't have a topic for this despite the interest, so I decided to make one.

We know the roster, courses, items, the anti-gravity mechanic, etc. But all we really need to know is that it's Mario Kart, with online tournaments. So go ahead and discuss the game, plan tourneys, and all that good stuff here.

Personally, I find the final roster somewhat disappointing (so many babies!), but having played the game at a demo event at Gamestop, I can safely say that it plays wonderfully. The anti-gravity is hardly as intrusive as I feared at first, and opens up the courses to unique twists and turns that would never be possible otherwise.

I reserve Luigi for future reference.

I'm looking forward to it. But yeah, the roster is kinda... Disappointing, to say the least. (Koopalings + babies = meh)

Well, as of my posting this, I believe it's already the 29th in Japan, which was their release date.
So I doubt it, unless they just left some new things for players to find on their own. Which would be cool.
Sadly, as I don't have a Wii U, I can't play this game. :sadshoe:

I'm in belief it's so more people will buy DLC characters that actually deserve a place in the game. I'd rather pay for Birdo than "Pink Gold Peach".

Aside from some of the hidden kart/bike parts, not much at this point. The direct pretty much spoiled everything else.

Klonoahedgehog wrote:

I read in an interview a while back that they rotate the extensive cast (i.e., not the main 8 repeating characters) per game to make each more unique. Not sure if it works, but it's probably less time consuming than having 50+ characters to animate and balance.

Nintendo partnered with Mercedes-Benz to make a car commercial starring Mario, so in return they're putting the car in the game as free DLC this summer, and hosting a themed tournament in the fall.

The Mario Kart 8 web app is now online. The clips are only up to a minute long, but it's still a big step for Nintendo. I hope they do something similar for Smash Bros.

Well it's one-off sponsored DLC, so it's somewhat of a different thing than just regular DLC. Still could mean good things in the future, though.

So, is this an app? Or just a site like Miiverse. I'd like a Miiverse app on iOS/Android.

Still, I thought Nintendo'd say "We're not doing DLC", like with Mario Kart 7, and leave some potential sales to dust.

Kind of reminds me of the sponsored Callaway tournament in the new Mario Golf a bit. It's a neat little touch, but I'm hoping that maybe they'll do some DLC characters and courses in the same way that the new Mario Golf is.

Kind of, but also because it seems... Conflicty with the whole cartoony Mario Kart style.

Ok just done my first race.

This game looks and sounds beautiful it's really showcasing what the Wii U is capable of.
I have a minor gripe about how items are handled, before you could hold an item behind you, trailing a green shell to block a red for example. This would clear up your item box so you could collect a new item while holding the green defensively. Doesn't work anymore, now you need to let go of the weapon entirely before you can pick up a fresh one. Bit of a shame.

Also as a nice thing they now do highlight reels. Pretty much all those fancy camera angle shots you see in the Mario Kart trailers the game compiles exciting moments in a race and shows you them from fun and exciting dramatic camera angles as a highlight at the end of the race.

I'm also not sure I like how contemptuously Mario glares over his shoulder at you on the title screen.

I've had the game since Wednesday and it is so, so good. The game looks absolutely stunning, and some of the new courses are so incredibly full of creativity! The retro ones have plenty of nice surprises too. Also for the first time I feel like a Mario Kart game has a memorable soundtrack outside of the Rainbow Road theme. There are some really nice tracks in there and I'm loving the jazzy ambience everything has.

Minor gripe, couldn't figure out how to do wheelies on the bikes. Is that gone now?

Also, Pierre, I kinda feel like not being able to hold two items makes it a bit fairer, since you used to be able to constantly have protection from red shells in first place. Now you're more vulnerable and I like that.

Maybe so but nothing will save you from MIGHTY BLUE.

In any case another nice thing, recovery times are much faster and smoother, rather than hitting lava or falling off a pit you get going but Lakitu (after years of practice) catches you and swings you back onto the course so no blacking out while the game reloads.

Can't wait to use the full roster of Metal Pink Gold Baby Koopalings this game has to offer! (Seriously, is Nintendo allergic to revisiting characters for this series or something? Remember ROB, Petey Piranha, Funky Kong, or even the Queen Bee from MK7?)

But then again, new Mario Kart (a free copy of Wind Waker HD can't hurt, too).

I do agree this roster is terrible. (And Petey was a kick ass character, especially in Mario Strikers)

Just garnering interest, folks need to swap friend codes (or Nintendo IDs the way it works now) before we'll actually be able to race together.

Warning: extended use may lead to an A-button-shaped indentation in your right thumb.

I got my copy today. I usually stop after one Grand Prix, though, so the aforementioned indentation wears off pretty quickly.

It was a Christmas gift last year. I've got a few games, but the only one I've thoroughly played is Pikmin 3. We're getting off-topic, though.

So far, I'm enjoying the game. The Super Horn works as advertised. I'm sure it'll be a life-saver on occasion, but I imagine I'll be cursing my inability to consistently have one in my possession come 150cc. I'm getting used to the controls quickly enough that I'll probably switch to a heavier character before long. I was partial to Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii, so I'll probably start using her in this game, too.

Still to unlock her, baffled by the choice of "Pink Gold Peach", lets get some Mario RPG villains up here as racers.

How is that Super Horn meant to work? It seems to just be a sound 'forcefield' around a kart that I'm guessing stuns karts and repels projectiles. I've heard rumours it blocks the blue shell.

Agreed one thing to say for it is it certainly looks great, I can see why they included the "Highlight Reel" feature so that pretty much every race turns into a mini-trailer.
