Hey, some of us enjoy our PSPs.

I have a few games, but they are good ones.

Valkerie Profile (never played the PS1 version)
Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee
Gradius Collection
Taiko no Tatsujin Portable (EBA is a superior game, but it's still a fun diversion)

Homebrew is one of the best uses for the PSP! Old SNES and Neo-Geo games..now PS1 games too. Playing Vagrant Story on PSP would be fantastic.

But a brick would be even less useful than my current musical paperweight. It's a shame your first PSP went that way. Did you ever get the downgrader working, even for a while?

Ah, the PSP is not entirely bad. You mentioned the magic words "Taiko" and "Gradius" :-) (I don't own the games but was very impressed with them)

But...more innovation is needed in the full price titles. Too many poor conversions from other platforms. If the ports were done well, and priced at around $20, I could stomach them better.

The only decent RPG I've found to play is Valkryie Profile (very good, still a port). And why are collections of old games (e.g. Capcom Classics) being sold at full retail?

Still, if they can release the Parodius and Twinbee collections, the $200 might feel less like wasted money.

Metal Gear Poratable Ops.
Loco Roco.
Lumines.
Lumines II.
Every Extend Extra.
Metal Gear Acid.
Metal Gear Acid2.
Daxter.
Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters.
Killzone Liberation.
Mercury Meltdown.
Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception.
Burnout Legends.
Mega Man Powered Up.
Metal Slug Anthology.
Valkyrie Profile.
Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Yeah, damn, I wish the PSP would just get some games already. I mean, what the hell? I just sit and look at it all day long, wishing there was something out.

I want a PSP, but I'm not willing to buy it at its current price (mainly because most of its good games are ports).

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. Having never played the PS1 original due to its absurd rarity (at the time), I picked this one up and I don't regret it. I just wish save points were more common.

Metal Gear Acid 2. Underappreciated. Turn-based stealth card strategy at its finest...well, when there's only one game, there's only one choice, huh?

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. Way better than every SF game before it, and the best part is they kept in my favorite weapon - the EDT taser! Ah, the long forgotten joys of tasering some poor terrorist until he sets ablaze...

Sega Genesis Collection. Say what you will, but considering the sheer amount of Pure Gaming Gold on this collection, $30 is a bargain. Hell...if it were just Phantasy Star IV, I would still have paid $30 for it!

Capcom Classics Reloaded. It has surprising depth considering it's a collection of arcade games, but it wore thin on me after a while.

Me & My Katamari. Not the best Katamari game out, but it's a great portable distraction.

Lumines. Because with every great portable system comes a great falling-blocks puzzler. The Game Boy had Tetris, the DS had Meteos, and the PSP has Lumines.

Exit. Great side-scrolling puzzle game, with a unique graphical style. I kinda want to import Kangaeru Exit, the JP-only sequel.

Not a lie. Of the list you quoted yourself, some are direct ports, others are "portable" versions of existing franchises.

Some of these ports have been good (e.g. Burnout Legends and the latest Metal Gear), and the developers have done well to transfer the series to a portable format - but they are still just conversions. Why are there so few original games exclusive to the platform?

I'm not sure why more original games appear on the DS - perhaps development costs are cheaper, perhaps the format allows for more innovation, I'm really not too sure.

Glad you're enjoying your PSP though, Holy Hell!

Well, if you really, really get down to it, then you can't count any of the Mario series, Phoenix Wright, Final Fantasy, and quite a few others on the DS, and when you really look at it that way, the DS has tons less of an original library. I'm not sure why, but something about the DS just doesn't give you that same mentality as the PSP, when it comes to ports.

http://www.gamespot.com/games.html?type ... ortdir=asc

Look there, at the top ten or so, and then beyond that. It seems the majority of every single top rated Gamespot DS game is a port, remake, or existing franchise as well. And although the DS does have quite a few more original games than the PSP, so many of them just suck, that it begins to get to the point that they're close to even, with the DS just having more "games" in general.

But yeah, I'm sort of enjoying my PSP, but mostly is just hibernates once I beat one of its many short, great games, unlike the DS. Sadshoe

Well, that's good to know - I'll certainly bear that in mind Godot

Portable Ops is a PSP exclusive game, true; however, it is still part of a franchise. It is a good game, but not novel in its execution (unlike Acid). I suppose conversion might be a better term than port.

As HolyHell said, the DS has many franchises also (PW, Mario, Castlevania, Kirby etc) - but there's a decent percentage of games not seen on other platforms.

Then it's not a port. It's that simple.

Bottom line: if it's fun, it doesn't fucking matter if it's part of a franchise or not.

When you think about it, there are few games that aren't part of a franchise. If by "franchise" you mean "a series of games that has two or more entires", then really, you're only left with one-shot titles like...um...Gurumin?

The PSP - not a terrible machine. Best attempt anyone's made as a competitor to Nintendo's handhelds, just hasn't lived up to its potential, doubt it will.

I should add though - there is supposedly a PSP redesign coming later in the year, with an improved controller layout and much more internal flash memory. That really could be interesting, provided there are enough developers out there still active in the market. Doesn't fix the lack of innovation, but might provide more to work with. There's a rumour about a touch-screen too, but that's been floating around for a while and seems unlikely.

I never really got the PSP. The nub didn't seem that great, though the idea seemed unique.

The PSP's biggest problem is not it's library, to be fair.

It's the mind set of the developers. The PSP is PS2 like in terms of quality, when the graphics are used correctly. But, developers tend to forget that people with a handheld system sometimes only have a few minutes to play a game. They tend to forget that people are on the go, and their gaming experience could end at any time.

Taiko Natsujin Portable is my favorite PSP game because it loads lightning super fast in comparison other PSP games, and can be played for 5 minutes, and still be satisfying.

Now, how many PSP games are like that. I really want to know.

Z3r0, my thoughts exactly. People don't buy handhelds to play at home, for the most part. They buy them so that they have something to do while they're out and about, like on a bus, a train, or on a long flight. Or, perhaps most likely, while they're waiting for an appointment. A five-minute game of Game Boy Tetris is the best way to do that.

Whereas the majority of the PSP's library is games that require a significant time investment. I'm talking about games like Valkyrie Profile, which sometimes lasts several hours between save points. PSP games that need to load a lot of data are also very taxing on the battery power, so stuff like Untold Legends, Mercury, and GTA could wear down your battery power faster than, say, a quick game of Exit.

The final issue with the PSP being treated as a home console: developers tend to miniaturize their console games to the portable system with few changes to the controls. Games like Splinter Cell Essentials and Me & My Katamari utterly suffer without a second analog stick, and even PSP exclusives like Syphon Filter, Coded Arms, and Medal of Honor Heroes rely on emulating a PS2-style dual-analog setup by having the face buttons stand in for the right analog stick. It makes some games very difficult to play comfortably, and unless you've invested in a grip extension (like the Nakiworld PSP Swing Grip extension), can lead to finger cramps and RSI. Not fun.

It is for those reasons that people tend to dislike the PSP and its games. Nintendo seems to have continually gotten these things right, while Sony and company are still struggling with them.

Screw the games' loading, the biggest problem of all is the fact that it takes at least more than a minute to turn on completely, if your game is already in. Eh?

It is saddening that the PSP isn't worth its meager library og good games... Really it is only good if you are into the whole homebrew thing, or use it as an expensive iPod.

My brother, however, does own one for homebrew purposes.

If you're using the OE firmware you can turn off the SCEA bootup logo and auto UMD start and get it to the XMB (main menu) in about 6 seconds. I would certainly not have a PSP if it weren't for all the fancy homebrew stuff it can do.

Anyway, games games games. Let's see. I have:

Darkstalkers Chronicles
Lumines
DJ MAX Portable (THIS GAME IS AWESOME)
Gripshift
Megaman Powered Up
Gitaroo Man Live!
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (sadly this game is really poor Payne)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

And I'll probably get DJ Max Portable 2 whenever I find myself with $50 more than what I need.

太鼓の達人 (Taiko no Tatsujin) Portable 1 and 2
電車でGO (Densha de GO) Yamanote line and Chuo line
Puzzle Bobble Pocket
Initial D Street Stage (at least I don't have to go to an arcade anymore, but it's definitely more fun with wheel and pedals).

And I keep all 3 PW games on my PSP with a GBA emulator (but the framerate sucks sometimes).

The analog stick can work well sometimes, and you just have to mod your D-Pad to get it to work well. Although, it'd have been better if they'd have just not released a horribly unresponsive D-Pad in the first place. Yuusaku

Emulators are slow and unreliable, especially the SNES emulators. The sole exception is gpSP, but that is an exception, not a rule.
